CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

Just canceled my account, I may resubscribe in the future but this whole thing is a bummer. Tested, Screened and Giantbomb were great together.

We all know why he was fired though. The Publisher put Gamespot in a arm lock because their advertising dollars went to waste when he gave Kane and Lynch a mediocre review. That is a no-no if your whole entire reason for existence is for Publishers to rely on you as a platform to boost sales with shilled reviews.

Oh I know, but it has never been officially addressed by anyone, so I am curious nonetheless.

I would think there would be a lot of bad blood in a deal like this between Jeff and Gamespot. I don't know the extent of what happened with the Kane and Lynch fiasco, but this just rubs me the wrong way.

People who made that decision most likely don't work there any more. It was 5 years ago.

That's um...interesting...

I hate that the family is being split up but okay, I can deal with it.

As long as I never have to click on a GameSpot link or redirect.

Remember how in S5 of The Office, Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin and started his own company then ran out of money before getting bought out by DM again? Yeah.

It's not literally the same people, but is the environment any different? It doesn't matter who the people are above them if ads are the most important thing.

What happens when Jeff torches a game that is being heavily advertised again?

I understand optimism, but I don't know how you can't at least be very skeptical about this.

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

He was obviously fired because of that. Anything they say today that states anything different is lies to maintain a good image of gamespot. Jeff talked down or reluctantly about them for years and today it's all good again. They felt lifeless in this live stream.

It would be stupid for Jeff to be hired again only for them to fire him for the same thing again.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the comments made by whiskey staff about how the CBS folks are not the same ones who messed things up before.

Because its trivial for another new set of executives to come into power and fuck things up.

I'm glad there's more security and resources available for GB but I can help but be disappoints they couldn't grow as a more indepant site

I'm not too worried overall, but I'll lament a few things. I need to know two things:

1) No more crossover with Tested?

2) What is up with Dave?

I feel like this'll be great for a short while, and then it'll just fold into GameSpot so deeply that we won't even know where the GiantBomb crew is any more.

While I know they're excited, and I'm excited for them, the fact that they were PURCHASED means, ultimately, their decisions won't stay in their control forever.

Anyone who believes they'll control their own destiny is terribly mistaken - someone else will be cutting their paychecks.

It was pretty fucking stupid to fire him for that in the first place, but they did.

I'm not saying they're going to do it tomorrow, but if the site still isn't profitable in 18 months, what happens then?
Same, why are people cancelling?

Because we wanted to support an independent venture that we thought was doing things the right way? Now it's owned by a media conglomerate.

Are you clueless?

I can't wait to see the Gerstmann-gate talk at 4, will be nice to hear the whole story of what happened.

And yeah, that Q&A totally quelled any fears I had. Sounds like Giant Bomb will continue to be Giant Bomb except now they have access to a big fucking green screen.

Didn't Jeff say awhile back that he wasn't fired because of the Kane and Lynch review?
I think the going theory was that was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, I seem to remember reading something saying they talked to him time and time again about 'his tone' and he didn't shape up.

wasnt jeff fired from gamespot because of the bad review score he gave to ... what was it? kane and lynch? weird

Well, he wasn't able to talk about it for legal reasons, but everyone put 2 and 2 together and went, "yeah, that's probably why".

I do feel like such a sucker for financial supporting this thing though. I guess we all make bad investments at some point in our lives. The premium content never added up to much, just liked the guys and wanted to see them exist independently. Clearly there weren't enough people who did the same to keep the site financially viable. I'm assuming they'd be out of jobs if this didn't go through. I'm really struggling to come up with an example of a huge corporation gobbling up a smaller competitor and having the smaller thing come out well.

I'm fine with this. If anyone ever wondered (even a little bit) how the hell Giantbomb was sustaining itself, this announcement answers your question: It wasn't. With better support from a parent company, it can still exist and entertain us. Who knows if they're going to change overtime, but if you're a fan of these people there's no real reason to stop supporting them. At the very least, give them a chance.

or don't, whatever crazy people!

Wow... this is for real? Fucking Christ.

I finally jumped in and bought a year long premium service just to support them a few months ago. No way I'm interested if they're owned by CBS and no longer associated with Tested and the other Whiskey Media guys.

This mean's they'll have to move offices and probably stop doing all that cool video content, right? No more crossovers with other Whiskey dudes, less freedom, no more "Whiskey Media" parties, etc.

This sucks.

Ditto, Zero interest in gamespot, and don't trust that the people I have no interest in hearing from gamespot won't infect gb content.

Sent a support email about a refund for rest of year but doubt I'll get one.

I basically just like their Quicklook format which sort of replaced the 1up show for me. Is anyone else doing that besides them?

Jeff signed a nda or something so he couldn't talk about it.

Same.

I don't see why i am going to continue to give them money when they are owned by a big company such as CBS.
