Kotaku Rumor: PlayStation 4 codenamed 'Orbis', 2013, AMD CPU, SI GPU, Anti-Used Games

If not for buying games on the cheap used then I would barely be able to game at all so if this is true then I most likely won't be jumping on the next gen bandwagon any time soon.

Either that or it might be the first time I buy a Nintendo console, since rumors seem to indicate that both Sony and MS are considering this.

Wow.. the video game publishers are sooooo insecure.. gotta make those millions and party in the gold vault (ducktales reference)...

I think the industry should just slow the F down and concentrate on LESS is MORE... that's how some of the most prolific games were and are created today.

If I can't rent games, I probably won't upgrade for a significant period of time until there is a deep back catalog. Who knows, maybe by then I just won't even bother.

don't fuck with my rentals, sony. don't fuck with me.

This basically makes Gamefly and Gamestop useless. Can't wait to see the share price of GME plummet when this is officially announced.

Not all is lost if you can download PS3 games over the PSN. Also... consider this a warning now, DO NOT SELL YOUR PS3!!!!!!!!

I never thought I'd say this but if the next Xbox and Playstation really prohibit me from buying/selling/lending/trading games, then the Wii U will be my console of choice.

This.

I'm not excited about the Wii U, far from it really. But if they're the only hardware manufacturer to not employ an anti-used games tactic, I'm going to be more interested in it.

At the very least, I doubt I'll buy both a next-gen Xbox and next-gen PlayStation if both are employing an anti-used game method, despite that I currently own 2 360s and 2 PS3s for use in my family room and man cave.

What does this mean for Gamestop? What will they do without used games?

They're scared of losing retail presence.

I for one don't care about their status.

About BC, given PS3's CELL chip I'm not surprised they got themselves into this situation. Sad to hear, dunno what it is going to do when it comes to decide if i'm going to buy it or not. Most likely no.

So there are rumors that the next Xbox and Playstation will use some type of anti-used game approach. Are there any rumors about an anti-used games approach for the Wii U?

Are the next generation of consoles really going to go anti-used??...man the lobbying for this should be interesting hehe...

Will pay extra for BC.

Wont buy it at all if there isnt a more expensive BC equipped model or some kind of BC enabling dongle I can plug into it.

Those are your options Sony.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So much for putting the entire PS3 library on PSN though.

Devs will prefer the systems that they think is better for them, which will be the anti used ones.

Lower your prices to 40 a game then if you want to be ridiculous and remove the used game market

I don't really buy used games, but this is still pretty worrying. I also don't like the notion that I have to be online to play.

edit: They need to do something about backwards compatibility, I hate the idea of virtually losing all the crap I bought on PSN.

i personally cannot wait to see new console game sales shrink instead of expand.

Well if you don't even bother, then I guess that means you won't be playing any game made past the year 2014.

It sounds good that they are targeting 4k with the PS4. I guess that means that most games will run at sub-fullHD instead of sub-HD.

I think this is the first real sounding ps4 leak.

And other than saving full games to the hdd and getting free download license, it sounds like complete shit.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
When fighting the encroaching casual games sphere of influence potentially robbing the console makers of customers, it is vitally important that you make playing games on your next console as fucking difficult and fiddly as possible. Hook up your internet at all times son, don't you dare rent that stuff bitch, oh you best not be looking for no second-hand bargains on that series, bruv.

The Orbis thing sounds far too rehearsed. Like this is the work of a forum person feeling really very clever with themselves, and not necessarily the clueless people in charge of naming these things.

If all this anti used games nonsense turns out to be true, I'm going PC only. Most used games I pick up are on Gamefly for way less than what Gamestop or any used retailer offers them. So I'd probably just pick up a lot of stuff on sale from Steam.

Don't know about that.

The PS3 was the least pirated of the 3 current gen systems yet that didn't seem to help it much in terms of third party exclusives.

Then again, good luck to them!

It's all well and good for super rich adult GAF (if the monthly pickup threads are any indication), but children and lower income families rely on the used games market to help finance the purchase of new games. They'll also be losing about 10-20% of their customers who don't have Internet access.

If this is really the case with next gen consoles, bye bye gaming. Time to play my extensive backlog from then on.

They should make a future-proof console, where you can swap in new gpu and processors, and just call it PlayStation 4ever.

I don't like the anti-used thing too much, but what I like even less is that you'd need to be connected to the Internet to even start the game. That would discourage me from getting it more than anti-used games.

No BC and anti-used games? If Sony was a pregnant woman and the PS4 was the fetus, I'd kick Sony in the stomach to abort that piece of shit.

I anyone actually surprised about the lack of BC?

Imagine how hard would it be to emulate what the Cell did.

Sony just Saturned themselves. I for one was expecting it and set my expectation to match that.

As for the Anti-used game thing.... well all my vita purchases are over SEN and I mostly play my games on PC.... so yea, non issue for me.

That's an interesting choice for an analogy....

-no BC with Ps3

Im' not even kidding, if this thing has zero backwards compatibility and won't play used game, im' buying a gaming PC and just writing-off consoles. That is so wildly anti-consumer it boggles the mind.

We really need to petition Sony to include Cell as a standard part of Orbis (when not playing PS3 games, it handles the usb ports or something).

Lol at people saying they are done with consoles if these "anti used games" rumors ends up being true.

Out of curiosity, where do you plan on playing video games?

Edit: Lack of PSN/Live Arcade/Wii-Ware/Virtual Console backwards compatibility would make me super pissed.

LMAO

Why do I have this? Well, let's just say that some major developers like EA games are currently very pissed because the PS4 specs are shitty compared to the next XBox and besides limiting their abilities in making more impressive games for the new Playstation, it's also going to shit up cross-platform titles in the same way that the lack of Blu-ray and Standard Hard Drive did with the XBox this generation, and Sony's not listening to their pleas for less shitty hardware. Right now, programmers are pretty much looking at it and comparing the two consoles like one is a high-end gaming PC and the other's a piece of shit eMachines unit from Walmart's $200 special (including monitor).

I have a feeling these anti-used game leaks are simply controlled leaks so that Sony and MS can refer the game devs to threads like these all over the internet.

From all of this is really does seem like it's a choice of who's screwing you LESS next-gen. What does this mean for PSN downloads and PS3 digital titles on Orbis?

Is Microsoft going to go with fully B/C? Odds are they will at least on digital format if from what we've heard CPU wise is true? Are both going to be using the Steam route of buying retail or digitally buy being connected to your account? So that eventually makes lending games out impossible, as well as selling a game, unless the purchaser knows of a say 'additional 10 dollar fee' to unlock the full game.

All very interesting, but what I really despise the most is that publishers are continuing this crusade against consumers rights with games and who knows if they're then going to crank games up to $70 per title and then with DAY 1 DLC for the 'complete' experience then what? $90 to 100 for 1 damn game?
