First Halo 4 GI information (Spartan OPs, multi, etc) [Update: Campaign/More Details]

What's the problem? People who make themselves invisible and sit in one spot waiting for someone to walk by are simply really good and skilled players! You have to be good at the game to not push any buttons, stare at the screen, then push a button when you see some lesser-skilled person pass in front of you!

Someone who camps with camo is the least of your worries in Halo.

I keep going back to that gif of the hitscan Halo 4 BR shooting with the fast base movement and the lack of health packs to worry about, and then I don't get so upset about anything. As long as Armor Lock is out and the AAs are changed from how they work in Reach, I can live with whatever, I think.

Oh Glal.

You so dreamy

Needs to be on every page:
gif3bqadk.gif

Sprint is fine; necessary on big team maps almost. Some smaller maps are ok without it, but that's what we have all that customization for.

Also being able to run doesn't mean its CoD.

Hah, I've literally used that .gif as a reply, myself. I think 343 was careful to release that kind of footage first - long gliding jumps, strafing and BR fire in action - to cement the basics of the game in our minds, before they rolled out the changed being wrapped around it. It's been effective; it looks like it will play I like I hoped it would, so all the updates, even the few that concern me, are not as worrying.

Even with Reach's flaws, if the core game were better (movement, grenade balance, etc.) many of the problems would matter much less.

Sprinting in Reach has not convinced me that it works in a Halo game. In fact, it has made me more adverse to it. Additionally, you (maybe not you, but others) seem to be equating "advancing the franchise" to "do whatever every other franchise has" when they're not the same thing and lead to different outcomes.

To be fair Reach didn't really design the game around it...or any of the armor abilities really. Swordbase supports the jet pack obviously, but it's such an awkward thing that I'm not sure why it's in 4 or was ever even in that game.

I really hate jumping to conclusions, especially when the information we have is limited, insufficient, and not verified, but I am starting to get a little worried since I don't really like any of the announced features except for maybe join-in progress.

I thought I would like the inclusion of Sprint in Reach, but something about it just felt off and changed the fundamentals of Halo MP.

Right now though, I'm hoping the return of the BR will fix everything.

One thing about sprint... when it was a chosen Armour Ability it had to have a discernible advantage that was worth sacrificing other choices for, so it had to be powerful. That is, when you are given the choice between turning invisible, turning invincible, being able to fly, etc. or simply running fast, the running fast option has to be viable choice.

Once everyone has it, however, and there's no opportunity cost, the difference between base movement speed and sprint can be less significant without players feeling like they made a dud choice, because they in fact made no choice at all -- they're just able to sprint by default.

In short, there's no reason the sprint will be as pronounced as it was in Reach, or for base movement speed to be nerfed in order to make sprint viable.

I agree with your logic to an extent. I think base movement speed in Reach was made slower because if it were fast then sprint would have been an unnecessary AA. If everyone has sprint, then the base movement speed doesn't *need* to be slow.

However, I'm worried that gameplay designers in Halo 4 will still want to justify sprint as a core gameplay mechanic by making the base movement speed slower than it might otherwise be if sprint weren't included.

Right, there is still a tradeoff when using sprint in that you can't use any weapons. If base movement speed was relatively fast, not many people would accept this tradeoff and sprinting would have hardly any use.

I just really wish there was a public beta.

Tis a shame about no public beta, I just hope that is because it would of taken more time.

I hope that 343 make more frequent title updates and changes to the game as it is needed, I've adored every Halo game online, but I've always been puzzled by the speed at which changes are implemented.

Especially when it comes to fixing hidey holes and off the map exploits, there are quite a few very well known ones which haven't been put right, despite being what I assume is a nearly instantly applied change via the internal version of forge.

Me too! Despite being inexplicably frowned upon, I still love it :)

I don't really care if it's back or not; in its current form in Reach it basically is just another AA I never use that gives me free kills when other people use it. I'm getting the vibe that Halo 4's jetpack will be a faster 'quick-hop' device (like the shock trooper in Battlefront II) for extended jumps, in which case I'll be much more likely to use it. But the Reach jetpack is so floaty, you're basically begging to get turned into a clay pigeon on most maps.

Got my digital GI. Nothing terribly different than what we have heard, but nonetheless satisfying. To me at least. I will say, hot damn this game looks pretty. Definitely beyond anything in the franchise so far.

As for game play elements that have people sweating, the magazine didn't exactly change what we know, but definitely presented them in less hyperbolic terms than people are taking them. Overall, I think we're in for a treat. I'm admittedly a fanboy, but regardless, I think the changes are going to shape the franchise in new exciting ways.

Its insane how good those pictures look in the digital issue.. I really hope GI will put some pictures up for non subscribers soon.

I was reading the article was worded differently in some places. Maybe 343 had a word with them. :lol

Not related to the GI story, but just saw this on facebook:

Halo 4
Live chat on Facebook with our mystery composer tomorrow at 10am PST (question taking starts at 9:30). Look for a link on the Xbox FB page!

FINALLY. I'm very nervous though. The Halo music from Marty is something special, don't know how they're going to deal with that.

Wouldn't surprise me, I guess. I think what people forget when reading magazine articles and first impressions is that they are all subjective experiences of what was presented. Objective in some ways, sure, but subjective in how the objective facts are presented. So people start forming conclusion off a sentence like "random weapons spawn around the map" and automatically assume things like, it's the only way weapons can be acquired, it will be totally random, etc. That's why, in the early stages, I just like to observe it all. Some speculation here and there, but mostly I trust that the first details are rarely 100% accurate, so it is generally better to wait until more content is shown, like during E3.

Call it "gamer's optimism".

To mitigate hype a little, the screens are good but not amazing "jaw on the floor" good. That said, they look better than any previous Halo which is fine for me.

The only thing bothering me at the moment is the look of the Spartan 4s. The new suits look kind of like a cross between Mass Effect armor and the Crysis suit which is fine, but doesn't look very Halo. Or at least very Spartan. Minor quibble though. It's supposed to feature a lot of armor customization anyway (right?).

so the jetpack is coming back comfirmed? I liked it, but i do agree that it breaks levels. I would like to see it reduced to a jump pack like the reaper in Starcraft.

I always felt as though the jet pack was fine, conceptually. Certain levels weren't broken by it, and were to an extent designed with it in mind. But playing something like Headlong with jet packs...makes me shiver in sadness.

Summary of the comments made by Frank and David:
  • Not much can be said for now about the multiplayer for now in detail, because Gameinformer has a exclusivity period. (Source)
  • There will be a podcast clarifying some of the multiplayer changes, however the podcast will not release this week and there is no ETA on it. (I will update this thread when it’s available) (Source)
  • Some of the conclusions reached with the GI article are not entirely accurate, some of the MP items mentioned have been changed since the media visit. This will be clarified in the near future. (Source)
  • 343 knows that some of the changes in multiplayer are going to be controversial in some circles, but they have not made these changes lightly. They have been clearly thought out and will be continued to be tweaked on based on player feedback. (Source)
  • Multiplayer changes that "invested, emotional" players are "raising eyebrows slightly at" are being very misinterpreted ("random" weapon spawns for example). This will be clarified in the future.(Source)
  • Some of the features and abilities (in the article) are being discussed without context. Again, this will be clarified in the future. (Source)
  • 343 promises that it feels like Halo and does not feel or act like other games it’s being compared to. They do understand that people jumped the conclusion fast, but when players play it they will know.(Source)
  • There is no romance forming between Cortana and Master Chief. (Source)
  • Forerunner Vision isn’t really like UAV in COD, this will be clarified in the future. (Source)
  • Weapon drops are not “Random”, they are telegraphed and in some ways, predictable. There is a variation though. (Source)
  • Map control will still be important, but it has changed to some degree. (Source)
  • Custom games will be heavily customizable, and initial playlist will be clean and focused. Players will not be presented with a stack of lists, but there will be a variety of different tastes. (Source 1, Source 2)
  • Halo 4’s Infinity section will feature every aspect of multiplayer, except co-op campaign. (Source)
  • There will be new and traditional modes under Infinity and it will have zero effect on the scale, size, content or appearance of MP spaces. (Source)
  • You cannot use Forerunner Vision to see players anywhere on the map. (Source)
  • Instant respawns will not be enabled in objective based modes. (Source)
  • Visuals for Forerunner Vision are still being worked on. (Source)
  • Nothing will be said about ranking or progression in detail for a while. (Source)
  • Halo 4’s Multiplayer is not using True Skill in the same way Reach did. (Source)
  • Armor Lock is not coming back. (Source)
  • With Firefight not coming back, Spartan ops will scratch that and other itches. (Source)
  • Battle Rifle will be recoil. (Source)
  • Dual Wielding will not be coming back. (Source)
Note: Be sure to check out the source, some things might make more sense in the context of how they where answered.
Great job on this, and I hope every person who flips their shit over multiplayer changes reads this and hits the brakes on panic mode.

Ohhhhh I just saw the in game screenshots.

Looks A LOT better than I expected. This will look so good with the higher res and no temporal AA.

Just checked out the digital version and WOW holy shit that is one visual upgrade. I can't wait to see this in motion, I really think Halo 4 is going to blow people away like Uncharted 2 did.

I would not go so far as saying that, but it looks bloody good.

If anyone has seen the GI digital screens, the game looks gorgeous.
That it does. But then I read some of the text and it makes me want to weep.

I know the idea of "perks" needs "clarification" but whats written in the article about multiplayer doesn't sound good.

You're going to start off as a recruit, and proceed through the ranks. As you rank up, you'll unlock more abilities. You gain Spartan points, which you can use to purchase items to put in your loadouts... Players slowly unlock an array of weapons, armor abilities, and modifications for a soldier to bring into battle.
I just don't know how to spin any of that in a positive light. Unlocking weapons? In my Halo? Its more likely than you think.

I expected some outside shots for the sceenies. Still, they look damn good. Really sharp. I'm not digging the MP upgrade stuff. That was the one thing I always liked about Halo was the relatively level playing field.

Does Cortana look like she got a massive upgrade or what? Crazy.

this might be for spartan ops though. Matter of fact I am positive it is. They said you will not be unlocking weapons in traditional multiplayer.
