Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2012 (Apr 02 - Apr 08)

Yikes, them Vita sales aren't pretty. I'm not sure a price cut is in the cards and I don't believe Monster Hunter alone would be enough to dig it out of that ditch. So, what would it take to salvage it at this point?

A lot of software. Multiple titles with realistic 500K+ potential, accompanied by a larger number of titles with 200K-300K potential, to be released on a fairly regular basis.

Right now, Vita has no announced titles in the former category, and only a few in the latter category or a bit higher (Hatsune Miku, FFX, Persona 4).

Awaiting Sony PR saying they are "pleased with unprecedented demand for the Vita" or something to that extent. NPD numbers may make a bad situation even worse.

I find it strange that you think the West "hated" the PSP because of lack of a second analogue stick and that one of the Vita's biggest problems is lack of UMD.

they were more indiffrent towards it. some dealt with it others didnt. maybe it was the lack of promotion that also did the PSP in. i mean the only time there was anything close to what promotion they needed was when Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core which both sold 300,000 each the month they came out in the states.

I think that was a description of what it would take to save the platform. Not whether that's actually going to happen.

I see. Though, out of curiosity, what first party studios are working on it/plan to?
All i know of is that Cambridge Studio is working on Killzone Vita. There are other 1st party games coming though, like Little Big Planet and Dust 514, but these arent excusively developed by Sony owned companies.

I thought Media Molecule was confirmed to be doing something?

I wouldn't expect the March NPD Vita numbers to be too bad. I mean, they won't be good either, but for one, March is a 5-week month, and secondly, the first couple weeks in March were still right after launch, so weekly numbers shouldn't have fallen too far just yet. But April NPD numbers could very well be truly NASTY.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Unfortunately, I fear we'll see bad bad numbers for Vita already in less than three hours.

I didn't say it was likely that they get software support in the quality and quantity they need to turn Vita around. Just that it's what would be necessary for that to happen.

Hot Shots Golf and Uncharted are already out. How long before God Of War and Gran Turismo? Probably 2 years. Patapon and Loco Roco are not enough to justify a console existence. Other than Gravity Daze, I don't believe Sony first parties have what it takes to create worthwhile games in a timely fashion anymore. Every potential new games rest on third party developers which could develop on 3DS instead. Thus the Vita is not really needed in the first place.

In your opinion. And that's fine. You value different things than I do. But I'm certainly not going to accept your value judgement as some sort of proof that the Vita is not needed or that the removal of all Sony first party titles from the handheld space is a good argument for a 1 handheld future. Because it's not.

Sony's titles may not sell for crap but there are those of us out there who do enjoy a number of them and would like to be able to play them on current and future devices. Choice is a good thing, not a bad one. Try and remember that.

I agree, although, isn't the Vita kinda "stuck" in that regard as well? I mean, wouldn't developers be more inclined to develop for the 3DS given its much larger userbase? Also, where does Phantasy Star Online 2 fit in there? Seems like big seller to me.

From what I know, very little. Which is part of the problem, just like it was with the PSP.

Sony has to hop to it and get its studios on the platform then.

March is a poor month for all retail sectors.

Numbers will be lower than Feb.

It could go either way. Who knows where the Vita market will be when it comes out in 2013.

Free-to-play = good(?). Not having a Monster Hunter (probably) to ride on the coat-tails of = bad(?). MMO, not local multiplayer (or is it?) = ???

It lost almost any sales advantage it had when it was announced for ios/android. It will do well with those who own a Vita but won't push hardware.

3 hours huh? I have to admit, I'm excited to see March's NPD. (Mostly in hopes of KIU selling well)

I'm pretty glad I held off on Vita, I felt that being an early adopter for 3DS was a bad move (replaying Yoshi's Island almost made up for it) so I didn't want to make the same mistake again.

the vita wasnt really worth 249, nor 299. we got a bit of a blackberry playbook situation here. it was worth 200 with 3g, and 170 without.

Actually... not sure about that. I think that was what was assumed before they announced it was F2P.

Confirmed by the team itself. No local multiplayer. So, not a good seller.

Off Topic but When are the March NPD numbers released btw?

The number should've already been released to paying subscribers (after market close). The press release stuff should be in a thread starting in ~2 hours. Always a question whether we'll actually get all the hardware data. However, we did last month, so there's hope!

And that is the main problem here.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Vita is 2013, Vita will be dead by then if it keeps selling around 10K/week.

Has it really come to "no developer is going to start a Vita project this year!" already? That seems awfully drastic and negative. It seems to me that developers have traditionally taken chances on new hardware every single hardware cycle so why should the Vita be any different?

From what we know, Vita development kits are cheap and it's certainly easy enough to share assets with a PS3, PSP or 3DS project so it doesn't seem to me that there would be a major barrier to entry for a small or medium sized project. Evidence even supports that many devs are doing just that by porting and upscaling older assets (Namco->Tales, Atlus->P4, Sega->Miku, Sony->all of them) to bring games to market fairly quickly and with minimal cost. These efforts allow a Pub to support a platform for minimal cost and hopefully grow the platform so that future projects can be made bigger with hopefully a higher ROI. It's standard practice nowadays and I can't see that changing for the Vita just yet. In other words, I really don't think any towels are going to be thrown into the ring anytime soon.

Obviously this situation can't go on indefinitely though. At some point there will need to be some platform growth or the Vita just won't get any new original projects outside of Sony first party offerings or the odd PSN only indie type game. I'm not sure what the time frame on that would be but 5 months/3 months on the market is simply to early to call.

I've said it before and I'll say it again but I think the Vita could conceivably eke out an existence as a port machine much like the PS3 did in it's early years simply because it can share assets so easily. That and Sony's first party stuff would at least keep the platform going for a few years although not at a healthy level for longterm viability.

The Vita isn't just any product in the market, though. It launched 5 days before this accounting month began. That doesn't guarantee great sales for the Vita, but it is certainly possible for a brand new product to behave differently than the market at large.

I would guess we'll see numbers near those last month (i.e. 200k+). Significantly lower than that would be a very bad sign. Significantly higher than that would be a success. Hitting 200k+ would neither be a good or a bad sign; I sort of expect the real market trends to only be evident in April for this system in the US, but I'm certainly open to being wrong.
