I believe the 3DS has sold faster than the DS in the same timeframe, even with this months sales. And to be fair, you'd be comparing 15 months with the 3DS to 18 with DS, if you're looking from launch to May.
That timeframe stuff is good marketing spin by Nintendo, but expectations were not only higher for the 3DS compared to the DS' initial slow months, but significantly so.

The DS was selling 3-600k in most months the couple years before the 3DS launch. That is probably the most consistently amazing sales of any system ever. It even sold 460k in the month the 3DS launched!

However the 3DS not only failed to capture the DS success, it killed the market for the DS and didn't recover all that well outside Japan after a very extreme pricedrop and Mario Kart+Mario Land.

Nintendo has a lot of work to do with NSMB, Brain Training and Animal Crossing to get the 3DS back on track.

@kmartnintendork Lack of any Wii titles? Maybe. When you sell 70% fewer Wii units as compared to last May, there's something afoot.

Get to it gaf!

If the number for May 2011 for Wii on the first page is accurate, that would put Wii sales for May 2012 at about 70.8k.

I want to say something along the lines of "Let's not forget this is a cyclical industry folks" but I wasn't following NPD during the dying days of the Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 and so I don't know if it ever got this bad. Does anyone have that data kicking around?

PS2 was still doing quite nicely, but PS2 was special. It was the best selling hardware, and third parties supported it. We didn't have a PS2 like situation this gen for many reasons. Wii took on a lot of the PS2 casuals. XBox and PS3 got the shooter fans. RPG fans wallowed in misery and are still coming to grips with handhelds being their only saviour.

oh I bought it retail mostly because I wanted to look nice next to D2 and the expansions. purely cosmetic reasons frankly and I didn't want to wait to download, wanted to play ASAP.

Sadly I heard through anecdotal experiences that retail vs DDL gave no-one an advantage when it came to playing ASAP but no need to derail thread.

Low US sales helps the PS3 catch up to 360 since it's stronger in Europe (except for UK), and everywhere else. I think PS3 JP sales are about %50 of PS3 US sales this month, which is remarkable for such a small market.
As a console generation drags on, US market will go down first, followed by Europe, and then the rest of the world. These are the times for the PS3 to catch up worldwide.

Post of the thread so far!

I'm always curious if such posters have been able to sustain this level of enthusiasm since the beginning of the generation or have come of age and got into the generation recently.

Another awful, awful, awful month. Nintendo could steal next gen with this holiday season alone if they were competent but after that E3 conference I'm not so sure of that.

Price cuts won't really help all that much either. This gen has gone on too long and has gotten way too stagnant. Next year's numbers are probably going to be even worse than this.

80 percent of PS3s connected to the internet worldwide, very high. More than 70 percent of PSN members use PSN weekly or more often, so very engagement. Average hours PSN is used per week is 7.1 hours.

From PSN data thread i created last week.

It seems people are busy with backlogs or are just buying few games

· Xbox 360 sold 160,000 units in May, representing a 45 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. This marks the 15th consecutive month that Xbox 360 has held more than a 40 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, May 2012)

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in May (hardware, software and accessories) reached $209 million, the most for any console in the U.S. and more than the spend on the other two current-generation consoles combined. (Source: NPD Group, May 2012)

· During the month of May, Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier,” “Max Payne 3,” Prototype 2,” “Sniper Elite V2,” “NBA 2K12” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” Xbox 360 also garnered more software sales than the other two current-generation consoles combined. (Source: NPD Group, May 2012)

WTF don't these people realize that Microsoft LOST E3 YET AGAIN

I kind of wonder if the video game market was insulated from the bigger economic problems the US is facing, and we're finally seeing a sort of delayed reaction to it by a couple years.

I mean, this is in addition to these consoles reaching saturation and new releases being pretty weak.

I also wonder if we're finally feeling the effects of all those mid-tier developers dying off. The release market isn't healthy, and it's so front-loaded with AAA releases in the holiday months, I get the sense all anybody does is wait for October-December for games.

PS2 was also the primary beneficiary of the Guitar Hero bubble in 2007/8.

2014 is starting to look like a long way away if that's when sony or MS plan to release their next console. I don't think either can afford to wait that long and if they do it will cost them dearly next gen.

The UK market has also been performing terribly, is there any reason to believe that Europe is actually doing much better overall than the US?

Also the PS3 still has a few million units to go and if sales stall WW that won't make it easy to make up a gap like that.

So we're looking at something like this:

360: 160K
PS3: 124K
3DS: 113.5K
Wii: 71K

Vita?

Look at it this way, 3 of the best selling mainstream Wii games Nintendo has a sequel to them all at launch

Just Dance 4
Wii Fit U
New Super Mario Bros U

And they already have 1 of the 2 biggest 3rd party titles this holiday season lined up with Assassin's Creed 3, and we've heard that Blops 2 is coming.

I just have this horrible feeling that the Wii mined these mass market software concepts (sports, fitness, cooking, dancing, etc.) to their root and that their success simply can't be replicated with the same effectiveness on their new platform simply because of the tablet controller or better graphics. They need new ideas.

It should bother any gamer that solid new IPs aren't rewarded with sales. Gamers are the reason the same unambitious games are peddled to us ever year from the same franchises. Dragon's Dogma > your lame pun

What is a solid new ip to one person is a poorly designed boring game to someone else.

Wii is probably going to get one last hurrah this holiday with a 99 dollar bundle as the new starting point.

Yikes. New consoles have to come out next year or this is going to get very bad. No way they hold out til 2014 now...right?

Any word on how Dragon's Dogma actually did? It's a great game. I hope it did at least 100k. I'm sure that's not what Capcom wanted but it's a game that I think will do much better over in Europe like Dark Souls.

The NPD said that the increase this month in sales was almost entirely because of Diablo 3. If Max Payne 3 had done good, they would have mentioned it as well.

That hinted that MP3 wasn't impressive at all.
