Google is probably like holding their Nexus like a limp dick right about now..

..gonna be hard to get excited about whatever that thing is gonna be after this.

MS typically never lives up to the hype, but damn if this didn't impress. It's hard to be innovative with a tablet, being that it's a tablet.. but they did it.

I don't think Google is going to show ICS again with their tablet.

consumers don't care about processors. There are inexpensive 7" android tablets on the market now. There are also 7" tablets from Amazon and B&N.

The person looking at a $200 7" android tablet isn't the same person looking at a $500+ 10' tablet that runs MS office...
Come on, the Fire and Nook will be total shit compared to a Jelly Bean tablet that's priced to compete. Sure, 10" tablets can do more with screen real estate, but not everyone buys tablets to work in Office. $200 with competent software can move volumes and people will compare them as substitutes.

They're hot garbage when held in portrait.
Wrong, it just sucks when you are holding it like a piece of paper. (Portrait)
Versus 16:10?

It's that much of a radical difference?

Really I don't know shit about tablets but I didn't know aspect ratio differences that small made something suddenly into hot garbage. Is this hyperbole or what?

The lawyers already working on it. The imagery is spot on.

16:9 does make a difference. It is a weird tablet form factor.

Edit: the labels are backwards

If the price, quality and battery life are good, I'd drop my ipad3.

I've tried to really find ways to make the ipad my goto work device but it just doesn't cut it. This seems to get me there.

The cover = keyboard is brilliant. Nice work MS.

I hope MS do more core hardware products and not just turn their product into an OEM mess like Android. So happy I stayed away from that platform.

This is my problem too, as much as I love the iPad, I have to force myself to use it as I always default to my MBA. Something that does both the job of my iPad and MBA would be very attractive to me. MS did a great job with the kickstand (for bed surfing this will be awesome) and the cover/keyboard thing. Great job all around, if the performance and battery life is there I'm considering replacing my tablet/pc combo with this.

Did they mention what kind of video card will be in it?

Is this thing capable of being a portable gaming machine?

Thread is moving faster than I can read it.

Surface keyboard has color schemes similar to Lumia phones. MS may be trying to cultivate their own ecosystem. They may start manufacturing Lumia phones on their own without Nokia.

This is how you do an iPad competitor. Those Android ones are all garbage IMO.

Methinks the x86 version will have integrated graphics comparable to a high end netbook or low end ultrabook.

In a word... Not really, no.

Depending on the specs, Pro version is very attractive to me, just hope that it's powerful enough to run some light games too. I actually don't care about the price much if so.

This thread confuses me.

It's like.. people I know knew of Windows 8's Metro UI + full desktop features, and I know knew about 3rd party tablets already announced.. are pretending they just didn't know these facts.

Other than the kickstand + keyboard...

... this is like.. "Hi Guys, here's what we've been saying about Windows 8 for almost 2 years now."

Hats off to Microsoft.

They've definetly given a guy like me - a guy with no compelling reasons to buy a tablet - a reason to buy a tablet.

Of course, it mainly means I'll be eschewing a laptop/ultrabook purchase in favour of their Windows 8 Pro tablet... but hey - this is where the market is headed with computing devices, so it's a smart move to be willing to cannibalize existing market segments so you're not left out of the game altogether.

I mean that's something that Apple has built into their core product philosophy - something that has helped them become as wildly successful as they are - so it's a good idea to follow suit on that one.

Wow. MS pulled an amazing hat-trick. This is basically a Win 8 touchscreen Ultrabook. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but they've convinced people to pay a premium for something that's already out.

Uhh so what? The iPad is a bigger iPod touch and it still sold millions.

That sounds great. When is Google planning on releasing the competent software?

Caught up reading live streams, so I'm not sure of all the facts as that's all I read.

USB 2.0 is kind of a loser for a 2012 product though. Pretty lame there.

Built-in kickstand is also pretty tacky.

The cover/keyboard looks pretty interesting though (highlight of the show). I'd like to fool around with that.

The Pro version has USB 3.0. Honestly, I have no interest in the ARM version of this thing. All of the support is for Intel chip Windows. That's the only one I care about. Something that is legitimately "no compromises". They just need to get the battery life there.

Weirdest announcement thread on gaf I've seen to date.

Well... they could've flubbed the actual particulars of the design. They're not Apple ya'know?

I've seen quite a few people in this thread say this and you can add me to the list. I was never in a rush to buy an ipad, but this thing looks really handy. I think Microsoft can make this big.. real big
