That's not a new fad. I remember kids in my highschool doing this on the back of their hands and arms. So that was like 6 or so years ago.

This still isn't as bad as the 'choking game'. It was fairly popular in the late 90s. Kids would strangler each other until they pass out, or nearly pass out. And when you came to you had this sort of 'high' feeling. Thing is, death is a very likely possibility.

I did that at camp a few times. You hyperventilate for like 10 seconds then get someone to push hard on your chest. Then you pass out. I remember one kid passed out and hit his head on the corner of a big footlocker. He had to stay in the infirmary all day and I don't think he or anyone told anyone that it happened on purpose. Other kids would also kick the person who was passing out in the nuts to see if they felt anything. I miss those days.

We had something similar but you had to hyperventilate to do it. Then someone would lift you up by grabbing your stomach from behind. Tried to get me to do it. No way, I enjoy living more.

Fortunately he ended up with a scar worthy of a vampire lord.

"Holy shit dude, how'd you get that scar?"

"Oh, just a midnight battle with Van Helsing. Everything went better than expected."

What the hell is wrong with people...

Planking is one thing, it was at least funny for a little while and generally harmless.

But trying to see how long you can last before giving yourself frostbite?

kids will always find dumb ways to kill themselves or injure themselves severely no matter what era it is.

Salt and Ice is old as hell. I remember some friends doing this like, 8-10 years ago. Next they'll be doing the hot water and teaspoon thing and claiming originality.

Aha, that's a blast from the past...
Big Red Challenge was awesome and I don't think it could actually hurt you so that's a plus. Unless you're allergic or something in which case why are you doing it to begin with.

Speaking of Big Red did anyone ever make little rockets out of the gum wrappers and do the trick where you sit them on your clenched fist, then slap the opposite side of your hand forcing air through your fist and causing the rocket to launch? Shit was awesome.

Edit: what's the hot water and teaspoon thing?

I'm really waiting for Russian roulette to make a comeback!

Yes some of this stuff repeated is from the old days (retro), problem is to some of these kids it's a new experience, hence the fad...

fad - a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., especially one followed enthusiastically by a group.

What, are you serious? Why would you ever do something like that. Damn.

Oh fuck, and I just saw the episode about this things in South Park yesterday.

When they are going to up it to Salt & Ice while singing Oh Long Johnson while standing in a railway.

Oh fuck shit. I did this once so many years ago, like 10-12 years ago! A friend chocked you (gently) and you had to do something else also (I dont remember what), we did it with your body to a wall IIRC and with people to get you if something happened, and when you waked up you couldnt walk for like 5 seconds and I thought I just waked that morning from my bed and forgot I was at highschool. It was a pretty disturbing sensatation and I remeber people did it once and not again and passed really fast. Didnt know it was a fad or that it was so dangerous.

Wow never heard of kids doing stupid shit like that playing outside must be extremely boring these days. Or is it for the thumbs up on youtube.

We did stupid shit like putting things on fire and shit.

how is this new? we were doing this shit back even before those shitty spartan sandals became popular with women.

Melchisdek from the bible either is god or has never died (aka is a vampire).

This has been around forever. You can test it on yourself without too much consequence because it really does work. I did it at a soccer camp like seven or eight years ago, but I only had a small burn because I didn't leave it on that long (no scar). I've shown it to my friends since and no one has gotten hurt at all. I never really thought people would be stupid enough to keep it on too long.

I look at stupid shit like this and think, "I'm so glad my parents bought me videogames so I wasn't bored enough to do this."

When I was younger my brothers and I would do this on the back of our hands and see who can last the longest.

I really don't remember it doing this much damage.

Did this shit ten years ago, stupid as fuck.

You know, you'd think what with iPads and xboxes and laptops in every kids hands they'd be a bit more occupied or content to not hurt themselves. But, I did it, so can't really say anything.

I also am guilty of playing the passing out game. Did it a couple of ways. Actually have a video of it somewhere. In middle school, the way you did it was to bend over, hyperventilate for about thirty seconds, stand up really fast and have a friend press on your chest. My buddy claims to have gone to Candyland while he was asleep. Its weird because you're out for 5-10 seconds but the experience feels like hours. Only side effect from that was a sore chest.

Then, in high school, sleeper and choke holds got pretty popular in my group. A few kids went to Westpoint (the Army's college here in the US) for a summer session and came back knowing arm bars and basic shit like that. One guy would place you in a sleeper hold, you'd say ready, and the guy would push your neck into the crook of his elbow while he put massive pressure on either side of your neck with his arm. Slowly, your vision would fade and you'd go bye bye. Did it in the high school parking lot once, passed out, and proceeded to imagine driving in my car to the theater with my friends (we had planned to do that later that day), watch an entire movie, grab some dinner, play some video games, and then I came to in the middle of a god damn parking lot after about six seconds of being passed out. Felt like five or so hours to me.

We stopped after I choked out a friend who weighed 50 pounds more than me and I couldn't hold him up after he lost consciousness. He fell, hit his head on the wall on the way down, then bounced his head off the marble floor and didn't wake up for a good fifteen seconds. Scared me shitless. Of course we were all like "Nah man, don't worry, you hit your head but you'll be fine."

Dude's going to study Neuroscience in college now.

You guys never did this as kids?

Granted I never did the cross on the back thing, but me and my friends would always put a mound of salt on our hands and then put an icecube on it and press down and we'd see who could keep it on the longest.

We'd often end up with purple circles on our hands for a few weeks.
