Not especially, the tutorial videos are pretty helpful. They suggest to start your first game on a Tiny map with only 3 other civs, seems to work out pretty well.

Does anyone know if there's a way to turn Dread Lords off btw? Because they just showed up after a couple of hours with uber powerful ships and destroyed everything.

Dread Lords are the woooooorst.

The only way to make 100% sure they don't show up is turn off mega events, but that leads you without a whole bunch of other cool stuff

I think they're so terrible that when they appear I usually just reload the latest autosave and the chances of that mega event happening again are so slim they usually never return.

This too. If you're going simply by quality then JC2 is still the best choice. Probably the best open world action game I've played this generation, so crazy.
