Rumor: Wii U final specs

Look at 4:42 at the handle of what appears to be a potted plant. Shadows suck in this game.

I will say that the shadow maps could use a resolution bump :p
But that's not what I was focusing on. It still is annoying, I agree. Nintendo probably wants to stick to a solid 60FPS at the cost of shadow resolution. Hopefully it's better in the finalized version of the game.

Wouldn't help imo. All screens I have seen posted in the press page thread all seem to have been bullshotted to hell and back. Kinda annoyed over it.

So off screen and video is all we have I think.

Ah, right. After looking at some vids and stuff I've realised I don't really know what I'm looking at anyway, I just know I'm not blown away by any of it.

Doesn't look that special if you compare it with the Puppeteer trailer.
Honestly, I feel the same way. I'm sure there's some techniques or other that I'm overlooking but that doesn't make NL look any better to my poor old eyes.

I really wish Sony & MS would start drip-feeding us some stuff because I want to know if I'm looking at the effect of diminishing returns or not. I want to be blown away!

Yeah would be nice to know what we're comparing too :p

Although NL isn't the best candidate perhaps!

On the PS4/720 stuff: imo if UE4 demo or 1313 didnt knock your socks off then you may be disappointed. We're not going to see much better than that on consoles this gen IMO.

Would be happy to be proved wrong though!

IBM Watson ‏@IBMWatson

@Xbicio @BoostFire The Wii U is a custom 45nm #power7 chip. Same SOI design in #ibmwatson

So 45nm confirmed (think some naturally were already inventing this "they probably have secretly switched it to 32nm" narrative recently).

And they only say the SOI design is the same as Watson. So I read it as more evidence it's not Power 7.

Nintendoland has some nice lighting and a cool art style, that's it - it's in no way a graphical showcase. The game is all about its asymmetrical gameplay and from the impression I read it does a pretty good job.

If you ask me - most Wii U launch games have a cool art style, but none of them does a good job at showing the system's raw power.

They also say Power7 chip...

Umm..they actually say its a customised power 7 chip.

beaten.

"...is custom 45nm power7 chip..."

Edit: beaten

But of course it's not an actual Power7. That would be absurd. It will just be something based on it. Or borrowing some tech from it.

I am confused too. Can anyone explain what it means in terms of compatibility and portage capabilities?

Am I doing it right?

This is the first time they have actually said Power 7 right? Before it's just been "Power"?

Does this help us narrow it down?

First time since last year when they first mentioned Watson/Power7. At least confirms it has some relation to power7.

Honestly, I'm really not seeing the 'wow' in either Nintendoland shot.

I want to see something that makes me question whether it's a bullshot or not.

I don't think you'll see that before Nintendo EAD shows their first 3D Mario on the console :)

Mario Galaxy was leaps and bounds above the early production on the Wii.

Edit : that said, I already find Rayman Legend stunning, but it's more an art direction feat than a technical power-house (although it should still have some clever technical aspects to render 2D that well).

Thanks for the responses, folks.

RE: NintendoLand. I saw the game (or whatever it is) up close at E3 this year, and it does look very nice, much better than what you'd expect of a shoddy, cell phone capture (obviously). It's just that judging by the screen alone, there is still nothing that seems particularly impressive.

Christ, does Nintendo not believe in Anti Aliasing? Hmm, this one has infinite DoF too.

Nice shadows though.

indeed. What the FUCK is wrong with Nintendo? The jaggies Ruin the complete fucking thing for me. Seriously. Now they are going HD and AGAIN the beautiful artwork made by talented artists is FUCKED by jaggies. It's like they are completely ignorant when it comes to these things.

Please, PLEASE. PLEASE, someone tell me that Anti Aliassing will be added before release.

THIS RUINS EVERYTHING. Imagine the next Zelda having beautiful artwork and just completely wrecked by this shit.

This goes for PS4 and Xbox720 too. Anti aliass that shit!

Don't worry. The actual game doesn't look anywhere near that bad. It's actually very smooth looking.

God i hope. Sorry but this actually makes me furious. Jaggies destroy graphics imo. Making them less believable, less immersive and it is very distracting. A nobel prize for the wizzkid that makes them go away in a cheap and efficient way. Even Wii games look sooo much better without them.

Considering XB3 will use an IBM processor, likely power7 architecture. The two consoles should be very easy to port to. PS4 using X86 will be easy to port to from PC. It could be interesting but it means Wii U and XB3 will end up a lot a like... except XB3 will be 2 to 4 times as powerful (though I tend to believe Epic changed the requirements for UE4 because XB3 will only have ~1.2TFLOPs of GPU performance (meaning ~2x the performance - speculation of course)

Yes, without wanting a one console future, it is nice that manufacturers make portage jobs easier for the devs. Everybody wins. Regarding PS3, I hope it is not too time consuming to rewrite code that runs on a x86 processor for a Power 7.

...

Almost all Xbox Next rumors now state and have for some time it's using a X86 CPU. As PS4 as well.
OK, hype deflates.

How is that possible? I mean, these are direct feed screenshots right?

Games usually do look much better when I'm playing them (or in direct feed video) than direct feed screens imo.

Not to say the direct feed screens lie, just that things look better in motion I guess.

I thought the EDRAM was supposed to help with 'free' AA? Maybe they haven't figured it out yet

Maybe that's a last minute thing or something. But i beg of you Nintendo. Anti aliassing is more important than you in all your ignorance and arrogance might think.

Anti Alias that shit! Please.

Here is how good Pikmin 3 could have looked if developed ground up for the Wii-U instead of built from Wii. Honestly looks better and cleaner, with better lighting than most PS360 games to my, admittedly, un tech-educated eyes.

that's a completely different art direction, though.

Maybe if every Wii U was packed in with a Towel and "DON'T PANIC!" written in the box people would finally have peace in their hearts...

that's a year 2 bundle.

comes packed with 3 towel defense games.

So if you have a choice to buy the Wii U for 300, or a tablet, say Google Nexus 7 for 200 or 250, for kids under 10 what would you buy?

Kids don't need tablets. Give them a game console which has richer games and doesn't get damaged on the schoolyard by some jerk.

Of course, I'm sure the games on the tablet will be a lot less expensive.

Good opportunity to teach them about the value of things.

I've come to accept that Wii U will be like this gen on steroids, and I'm not nearly as disappointed as I thought I'd be about this. Will have enough unique games and features that have me excited.

Orbis / Durango will likely be like this gen only on a couple more steroids.

Somewhat specs related....but if you guys were given the opportunity to purchase a Blu-Ray license separately so that the system can play Blu-Ray movie discs, similar to what Microsoft did with the Xbox?

I know I would if the price is reasonable.

I probably wouldn't since I'd wanna get a region free player and not have that stuff be determined by the console.

Remember:

They used a video with scroll lag to show off Nintendo TVii - and I don't believe that it will have scroll lag on the day it's being released.
And now you got screenshots with heavy jaggies. I think the final product will look slightly different.

God. Come on, Nintendo. It's not hard to make something better than this on a 360-level hardware.

Wait, I'm hearing something in the distance...sounds like chuckling. *whips out binoculars* Iwata is laughing from atop his throne at the pinnacle of cash mountain.

Almost all Xbox Next rumors now state and have for some time it's using a X86 CPU. As PS4 as well.

That conflicts with IBM Oban:
http://www.fudzilla.com/processors/item/25619-oban-initial-product-run-is-real

and this from just last week with rumors of delays:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/09/06/xbox-720-could-be-delayed-by-manufacturing-trouble

Honestly moving to x86 would hurt 360 backwards compatibility and it's too huge a selling point for them. I doubt all x86 rumors for XB3 and find them all wishful thinking but if you have a link to one that is compelling, I'll certainly take a look.

I saw people throw around claims - 'GI', 'radiosity' - but no one explained where it was evident in the shots posted. At least as far as I read?

Sorry, should have been more clear about it.

LBP2 does world space irradiance volumes for the scene - they only do RGB for zeroth order SH, and just monochromatic 1st order, so it's really not much for lighting (that's why there's no colour bleeding). :p They also don't propagate the light as they just sample the volumes more in the direction of a light. It's really geared towards shadowing/occluding/light fall-off.

The quality GI will be from the pre-computed lightmap for the background (they can still move around the sun).
