Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) News and Announcements Thread - 2012 Edition

Man, cheap presentation aside, Fire Pro Wrestling seems really fun. Surprising amount to it as well, with the leveling up and unlocking costumes, moves and such for your wrestler. If I had the money to spare I'd definitely buy it.

Really good demo too, I'd recommend trying it out if you were at all interested.

This comes has someone who never played a proper Fire Pro Wrestling by the way, so I can't comment on how it measures up to those.

You sure about just local co-op? I pretty much agree on what you said though.I have tried all 3 guys now and the Warrior was the worst as far as ennemies animation, the Wizard was the better ennemy wise but yeah, the atmosphere and eerie music and the graphics are pretty good but what kills this game is the animations...still enjoyed it but at this point I will grab it when it's on sale for like 800 or 400 points...

It boots me off of Xbox Live just like that guy, so even if it had online co-op, it wouldn't work.

Yeah, as long as you go in knowing that it's not hardcore FPW:

You have to unlock moves to assign by going through the various divisions.

You have to buy costumes and pieces, taunts, entrance anims, themes, and other superficial bits by spending in-game currency earned in matches.

You have to level your wrestler by winning and doing it well with experience earned to allow more attribute points to allocate to your stats, which allow you to equip different moves (once unlocked by progress).

You cannot save many characters as you're limited to just a handful of character slots.

You cannot create and play with custom AIs or freely recreate most real-world people due to a more limited set of moves, entrance anims and themes, and costume pieces.

You are limited to two-on-two tag, two-on-one, or one-on-one.

Timing seems a bit more forgiving to accommodate online play, but it's not really bad on its own...just looser than classic FPW.

Still, it's a very solid FPW rules-based game with clumsy-looking, cartoony characters and animations, some sloppy collision, some interface bog, and weird framerate issues. I know that sounds like it's a dirty shell of something like Six Man Scram, G, or Returns (it is), but it's still one heck of a fun arcade wrestler with loads of options even though drastically cut by comparison to FPW classics. Still don't understand what took so long to release when it feels quite a bit unpolished upfront, though. Fun, challenging, and goofy game that could use a patch to smooth out some things.

There's actually a 4-man "Battle Royale" in the demo, though it's actually a fatal four-way elimination. Doesn't work too well though as there doesn't appear to be a way to manually change who you're targetting.

Ah, you're right. The variable framerate is also nastier than in campaign mode for me during an exhibition match in either modes. Hmmm.

My quick recap of R.A.W.

Game boots you from Xbox live and nothing you can do to sign in. It feels generic, with a lack of polish. While the game is pretty to look at, there is no sense of collision or connecting with enemies - although there is a very impressive number of enemies onscreen at once. Animations are lacking with enemies sliding and warping into position if you use magic attacks. Oh and it's only local co-op.

I'll be getting around to a full review this weekend, but honestly not worth $15.

My thoughts exactly. I was hoping for the best, but while playing the demo I couldn't stop thinking about wanting to just load up Torchlight and get in another playthrough.

I wish Runic would find a way to get TL2 on XBLA :(

This. I forget now, but what was Runic's excuse for not getting Torchlight 2 on XBLA?? Either RAM or xbla size limit, of which the latter as we know, has been lifted to above 2GB now.

Xbox.com states Guilty Gear's release date as October 24th, but I can't find anything else that corroborates that date so far.

A few recent XBLA playthroughs:

Fusion: Genesis - This is basically a semi-offline MMO twin-stick shooter space mining exploration combat game. It's very very ambitious, especially the MMO features; you're constantly online and people who go to the same map you're on automatically get matchmade with you so you can generally see other players flying around. If you take place in a big fleet-vs-fleet spaceship battle and another playing is aligned with the faction that's opposing you, then they'll show up fighting against you. There are 5 factions you can join; Cops, Thieves, Traders, or two warring factions (one is sort of a religious cult, one is sort of an Empire). Each faction has 4 types of ships each with 4 levels. Each faction has 9 unique faction missions + there are 9 unique main storyline missions + unlimited randomly generated grinding missions + Big army battles + 10+ tower defence type maps + one final dungeon raid against some pretty tough bosses. There's an auction house, and the game links up with a companion game for Windows Phone 7. The scope is really unheard of in a downloadable game. If there's a downside, it's that you need to do pretty significant amounts of busywork between unlocking actual unique missions... I'm not sure if this is typical of MMOs, since they're clearly aping the MMO formula, but it's something that frustrated me a little. Still, I'd say I got 15-20 hours out of it. I finished every mission, grinded to get the best weapons, leveled up to the level cap, and did a ton of raiding. One other quid pro quo--search out some FAQs. The UI is very unhelpful and there are basically no in-game tutorials so half the mechanics require outside reading to understand them. Once you do it's easy to do what you want and build the character you want, but in the mean time, it's obtuse. Again, I'm sure this is a result of them assuming their audience are MMO players. Very fun, highly recommend it the next time it's on sale if you like the demo. I got 200/200 achievements in it.

Puzzle Quest - Yeah, so, I've owned this for 5 years. I basically think it's a very compelling and addictive game, but not a good one. Virtually nothing that the game adds to the basic Bejeweled formula is all that enjoyable. The XBLA version has some significant balance fixes over the original release to prevent infinite combos. There doesn't seem to be much of a skill element. There's a lot of frustrating random elements, particularly in any of the side modes where getting a "no moves" gets you a game over. I had several occasions where I made a single move on those boards and then got a game over. I also find that pretty much every stat and game mechanic is not explained very well in-game.

My biggest problem is that you can be a level 40 badass at the end of the game with super high stats... and if you fight a Level 1 rat, it still takes 3-5+ minutes to beat. So basically the whole game feels like an endless slog. Even if you're super high level, it takes a few minutes in a match to build up your mana levels to the point that you can start really taking advantage of your skills and build, so pretty much every fight starts with the same tedious resource buildup. Start quest -> Identical fight to the last 200 fights you did -> 10 minutes later you win -> Get useless quest reward -> start next quest -> etc. Some of the plot stuff is vaguely interesting but the presentation is designed to be pretty minimal so it's a bit hard to get invested in any kind of characters or anything.

I felt like what I feel like when I get a craving for a bag of cheezies. I eat the first few and it's awesome and I keep going and at some point I realize that I hate them but I still keep going anyway and then the bag is finished and I'm miserable and frustrated, even though I know I did it to myself.

Unfortunately I can't get 200/200 since you need to win an Xbox Live match and there's no community anymore.

I believe that's the japanese release date for it but there's no NA release date set.

I am really excited for the Marvel vs Capcom Origins release on wednesday.

Probably only interesting to me, but a handful of older games (I noticed Limbo, Portal: Still Alive and SotN) have had their artwork changed to the new, orange Arcade bar. Other popular titles, like Geometry Wars 2 and Braid, have not, so I'm not sure what the reasoning is. Would be nice if they fixed them all.

I enjoyed Puzzle Quest, but definitely agree with your impressions. To the bold, I would note that the second game is much, much worse in that respect, to the point of absolute tedium. I played Puzzle Quest through to its conclusion, though it went on a bit too long. I abandoned Puzzle Quest 2 fairly early on, as it's more of a grind than the first game.

Totally getting MVC2 at that price. Think I'm missing the Captain America table too, unless that's in either of the Marvel packs?

No Borderlands DLC on sale during Borderlands 2 week? WTF.

When is that Lord of the Rings DOTA game coming out? I am seriously hyped for that. If they do it right it could be absolutely amazing.

Kind of wish SA2 had better lighting tech added to it, it looks really flat and old as it is but I am still happy to see it in HD after all this time.

I'd imagine Geo Wars 2 is because Bizarre are gone.

Oooh, yeah!

Good sales this week.

I'm getting The Marvel tables, so my only table missing will be Fantastic 4.

And extra charcacters on MVC3.

It is a shame we couldn't get the extra costumes complete pack.

I'm so excited to play that Avengers table.

Yes, I noticed this as well, and I've also been wondering why they don't just update every game.

However, I recently bought Limbo when it was one sale, and in the store it showed the orange "box art". However, once I bought and downloaded the game it showed up with the white box art in my game collection. :(

Makes no sense.

I'd imagine Geo Wars 2 is because Bizarre are gone.

I don't believe the development team would have anything to do with the XBLA art being changed in such a minor way.

Not seeing these on the site in the UK, is it a dash-only offer or something similar? Might as well get that Time Savers pack for free, despite not playing the game at all anymore!

You need the Sales & Specials+ App. You should be able to download it from your uk account.

There hasn't been an occasion to post it yet (may as well now) but previously owned DLC will show up and be counted (but it can take a little while for them to hook everything up).

Does anyone actually still play Blacklight: Tango Down? I'm in the mood for a new MP shooter, and for 200 points it looks decent enough.

It is still the most-played FPS on XBLA, though that doesn't necessarily mean that matchmaking is fast and easy... You'll en up waiting in lobbies for 15 minutes quite often, but you can eventually get a match going.

I've noticed this too and having OCD for stupid stuff that doesn't matter (like 2 different variations of cover art for my XBLA games) drives me nuts.

I think a game gets it cover art updated to the new orange banner if the game gets any kind of update (title update, new DLC added, a permanent price drop, etc) after they made the switch.

Is this for USA?

Yes. Actually, I think sales are the same for all regions.

Oh shit, that looks quite a bit worse than Neon. Maybe it should've stayed forgotten.

Anyway, what the hell is the deal with the Sales and Specials app? I'm on a UK account but the only thing I can find (using Bing, can't find it manually at all) is an empty page for it with no download button. And even if I do find it, would I need to buy things in it with the account that downloaded the app? I need to get on that Dungeon Defenders...

How the arse do you have an asymmetric 3rd person shooter? You run around and shoot and hope that the other team are in the right place in twelve hours when they load it up?
