Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

So, the new Forge map, briefly. Been busy today so I haven't had a chance to chime in.

I'm red/green colorblind, which means a lot of shades of other colors that are not grey, look grey to me. So that may be part of it.

So when the developer said they want players to accidentally build beautiful maps, and then panned out to show an ocean of grey pieces against brown rocks and a (mostly) black background, it was quite the juxtaposition.

The shadowing does help. But I am disappointed that it's still a grey metal dungeon, and that the map is primarily brown/black. It's not pretty.

The new tools to quickly iterate and snap pieces together are helpful, but only at the Forging 101 level; the best custom maps use pieces in non-traditional ways. What I really hoped for was a way to snap pieces together and then move them as a unit; take this section of the base I built and move it over, rather than one part at a time.

Player trait zones are interesting and some neat things will come of it, but they feel like novelty features.

My hope right now is that we get a grassy Forge map, and that some of the objects we can place are grassy hills, to shape the terrain. Toss in some tree objects, and that's how we'll get a beautiful Forge map.

The Forge World palette had a lot of problems. A LOT OF PROBLEMS.

I hope they are not carried over verbatim.

Fans: Reach had too much Forge give us proper developer made content.

*Halo 4 to launch with no Forge maps in MM*

Fans: We want to more Forge content

I guess they hoped everything would not be grey again. The lighting looks so much better but unless they add something great to alter the look of things, we will end up with more grey maps.

One of the recent maps they showed off had the normal grey mixed with plant-life taking over. Just give us a few options to add to the map that will change the overall look. Like baking in the shadows but with effects and textures.

Just an idea: maybe since we can have baked-in lighting now, we'll be given more options with colored lights. Bigger ones, even. It'd be cool to have actual sizes (either default or customizable) to help increase diversity. Maybe that's why most of the pieces are white! So that when your maps are bathed in colored lights, it's easier to identify them!

The rocks are more bluish purple. The skybox also has blue on one side and red/yellow on the other. When she was saying "a pretty map without trying", it was showing the red/yellow skybox, so maybe you have a difficult time seeing it. :(

I think the environment itself is great, the structures could use variety or options though.

Glasslansd and TTW have gone into great detail setting up the ONI and Elite plots. Have you even read these books?
No! You forget the facts that a Human character stands for humanity. Is the character xenophobic? Whole humanity is xenophobic. It is too hard for people to think that people could have different views. The person thinks that Halsey did atrocious stuff? Humanity thinks like that.

Wait? Something does not fit with other released content. Oh right! 343i fucked up the Prometheans. They aren't like that in Cryptum. 343i DO YOUR JOB RIGHT?! No. People should not think about: "Wait. Why is it like that? I want to find out!" No. It is of course a problem because the author/or who did not pay attention.

Sigh.

Have you even read these books?

Exactly what I was going to ask. As far as I was aware, the
zealotry story
is well-established and has been key to Halo's Covenant storyline for some time.

"Oh humanity now have
engineers on their side?
"

Um...yes...again, did you even read Glasslands?

Well fuck me. The video title is already a spoiler. The Thursday war has been out for a couple of weeks, at most.
M'dama
being there & alive resolves one of the most tense plots of TTW.
What the fuck were they thinking?

Ideally there would be a combination of the Far Cry 2 editor and Forge.
I agree 100%.

Forge right now is an object editor. It's not really a map editor. Yes, you can make maps out of these objects, but they are nowhere near the quality of the developer made maps. This is because of i) developers know map layouts and flow better than the average player, ii) the assets given to the average player are less than stellar, and iii) the ability to only edit certain objects hinders its potential. If you really want to improve how this content is handled, you need a map editor and an object editor.

My proposal a long time ago was Forge and Anvil. Forge is your object editor as you know it. You can throw down basic objects on the map; pre-designed bases, explosives, weapons, spawn points, etc. Anvil is more Far Cry 2 style. You can change the terrain, weather, flora, time of day, ambient noises, etc. When you're done with that type of editing, you can export it to Forge and change the objects on that. If you don't like the terrain once you've placed objects, you can save object placements and edit terrain in Anvil again. Maybe you can make the objects invisible and visible to see how you are affecting the objects.

Honestly, in 5 years, I expected a bit more than magnets and shadows...

Unfortunately it reveals the ending of the most interesting plot line of TTW. But I would take a book spoiler before they are revealing something from the game's plot.

I'm pretty certain therein lies the problem. The FC editor is really far more simple than Forge if you think about it. Plus it makes you complete that stupid fucking checklist just to use your map.

I'm disappointed with the Forge news so far, but Far Cry 2's editor isn't great. As you said, you're basically stamping random objects. Forge allows for greater manipulation of traits and gametypes, while also allowing you to "lego" build easily and quickly.

The only real advantages of the Far Cry 2 editor would be terrain deformation, textures, and ToD.

I would love to see textures and terrain deformation in Forge!

10 developer maps + 3 Forge maps

This.

I have a question for you guys. Would you prefer things the way they are with Halo 4, 10 developer maps + 3 Forge maps

Or

Would you prefer a Halo game with NO developer maps, just pre-made maps using the terrain/object editor, which of course you could also use

inb4 I fucking want everything gimme nao fuck u 343

Oh so you mean Reach?

I'll always be in the camp that wants real maps made by the dev. team over Forge crap.

I couldn't care less as long as theres division. Comunity Slayer, with Community made maps. Leave good playlists alone. I don't want to play your shitty legoland I want to spawn flag-glitch camp on Zealot thank you.

That looks like absolute dick. As do any of the FC novelty maps. They look more like dick than the grey Forge maps you all complain about too.
Why? Could you find a Zanzibar recreated in Halo Reach and list out the things it does better or more faithfully than in that FC2 video?

Wait are you serious? I really can't tell.

I think those are incredibly well done maps for a game that has been on the market forever. I don't do forge so I can't comment directly, but I think this output Flipyap posted is better than any Reach forge map.

One of the biggest follies of Reach is that the map pool SUCKED unless you bought all the DLC map packs. Which I should also state to add to this, that the DLC maps are fucking amazing in Reach. Best DLC $ ever spent for me.
Weapon placement and selection on Highlands would like a word with you.

Why would anyone want the second option?

Even though Reach's built in maps weren't anything special, I'd take them over any of the Forge maps, outside of Asylum.
Me and Over are playing with ZooJoo'z right now.

Over managed to kill the party mood.

That must be awkward as hell

We should be able to have directional lighting and different shapes and objects that emit light. Just a cool thing to think about.

So the 360 they made Halo 3 for is still the same 360 they have made Reach and 4 for.

Ignore the time it takes and even the resources needed to do these things for a second. Doesn't it seem a bit unrealistic to always expect more and more from a game that's restricted quite heavily by disc space and a plethora of content/features? Can we really just ignore that the 360 is not far off a decade old and expect more than the plenty we already have?

I honestly just hope frame drops are reduced significantly. What good is a new Halo game with a great map editor if it runs like shit, still? Wouldn't you rather they fixed the functionality first?

Because seeing as though Halo 4 is 2 packed discs, hypothetically you'd have to remove content to add in a super Forge like people are asking for. And taking away MP maps would make the most sense because the editor would be good enough to please everyone, so fuck it, might as well just use it for the disc maps.

I know I'm alone in this but I don't care.

It's a good map.

Once they eased up on the ammo count and respawn rates for the power weapons, it became quite enjoyable. Needs 6v6 though. What was wrong with the placement? The map was mostly symmetrical and travel times to the neutral weapons was basically even.

I will admit that jetpacks suck ass for that map, but that's a Reach problem, not the map (at least that's how I see it).

I stil want 343 to keep the Forge garbage out of the hoppers. Put them in a community playlist so I don't ever have to play on those maps.

Just have a playlist called "Forge World", keep them separate, everyone is happy.

It makes it much easier for the people who want to try new community maps and it allows others who aren't interested to bypass it.

Forge is obviously still grey because colors would take up too much bandwidth. /salt

On the real though
I am disapointed :/

Fixing the bland map problem is pretty simple: give us more small, cosmetic forgeable items, such as wastepaper baskets, potted plants and miscellaneous stuff and debris.

Stuff like a small tree in one corner and part of a crashed pelican in the other could go a very long way in giving the maps a sense of personality.

Possibly some wall pieces with randomly generated cracks and/or overgrowth (moss, lichen) too.

fixed.

In all honestly, change the jet pack into a jump pack and I'd be okay. Any prolonged time in the air really breaks combat flow and map design.

I was just about to say something similar to this before your smooth edit. I was just noting that it breaks some maps more than others. It's actually one of the few maps where this is the case and I don't exploit it. But stuff like Boardwalk, Reflection, Battle Canyon, Solitary, Tombstone (or whatever), etc, I will jetpack the shit out of. Why not? I'm not bumper jumper (gasp!) so I might as well to get that advantage, and it's usually significant. WHICH IS FUCKING STUPID.

Hrmm...if they launched the tools a few weeks before the game came out, giving the Community Time to get a massive base of new maps and remakes, then the second option would be fine with me.
