I think this could be one Disney potentially does right. As if they fuck up on Star Wars (worse than George fucked up I, II, and III), then they'll never live it down.

I always wanted to see 7, 8, and 9 happen. but I was glad it didn't happen after seeing the first 3 in the story get made.

Godspeed Disney... Godspeed.

The Thrawn trilogy would make for TERRIBLE movies. I wish people would leave that alone. The one EU stories that would make for excellent movies are the X-Wing series, and the Dark Empire series.

I hope this new trilogy delves into the political background of the starwars universe, giving us a more in depth look into the actually running of a galaxy, vs. some clichéd story of some rebellious underdogs vs. fascist imperialists already perfected by Avatar.

It really bothers me when people attribute all of the failures of Star Wars to George Lucas but none of the success.

Here's the deal. everyone attributed the success of those films to lucas before the prequels came out.

After seeing him wreck not one but three films in quick succession, people started taking a harder look at his non star wars work that wasn't so great, and determining that star wars just might have been successful in spite of him, not because of him.

OR, it's totally possible that lucas just got worse as he got older.

Yeah I remember how many old Joseph Cambell documentaries on the "majesty of myth" etc used to glorify Lucas... and we all believed it.

The post 1997 hatred for Lucas is all because of what he demonstrated since that time...

Hey I loved those documentaries....

I'm not sure if it'll be a good or bad thing, still early days, and I don't really care to be honest (coming from a huge Star Wars fan from my younger days); but I am astonished at the amount of people who clearly are still invested and give a damn about the franchise.

I'm astonished at myself for caring still. I've grown to hate Lucas for constantly meddling with the originals and the sucking of the prequels. But, this is wish fulfillment that I never dreamed would happen right here. I still can't even believe it.

I don't like the idea of new actors taking on the original trilogy characters. Hopefully it's set farther in the future

yea how the hell would they even make that belivable? having new actors playing luke, han and leia?

They cant be thinking that, I know they cant.... 4billion down the drain if thats their plan. I am sure they have a better plan than that.

People basically act like there are two different people; two different 'Lucases'. And it's true to a degree. The guy obviously changed a lot in 20 years and no longer had/has the same creative mind. It's his baby, but I do think the franchise would be best with him at a distance.

I'm expecting they'll set it long after RotJ to get most of the old cast out of the picture, have lots of new toy-worthy ships/settings/characters, and try to aim it at a wide audience so that kids and adults can both be entertained. If cast right and given a decent script to work with, I think it just might work.

Ya I'll be completely honest, the time for sequels featuring those characters is long past. The only one of the main actors from the original trilogy I could see being up for a cameo would be Harrison Ford and maybe Mark Hammil. And if they do recasts its just going to be plain weird, those characters have been icons for 40 years at this point.

Best course of action is probably to set it 100 years after the fall of the Empire or something. Still close enough in time to the other films that their events are relevant, but without having to worry about any of the original cast still being around.

JOSS MOTHERFUCKING WHEDON

Nah .. a bit too campy in taste for me. Give me someone like Blaumkamp and do something different with the franchise. Since the story basically picks up with
children of Han Solo and Leia, they can take the children... and their basic force powers in a new direction.

Its been years since I read 7 and 8, but aren't those characters
aged and transitioned out in place of their kids in the new trilogy? I don't recall much of Luke, Han or Leia in the later books.. but I remember their precense early on.

Lucas already destroyed my childhood and that wasn't enough. Now, he wants to destroy my kid's childhood also...

Understandable, but to be honest it's because the making of the originals has been documented to death and while Lucas was the driving force, there were also several other individuals who had a huge influence on the creative direction of the originals (such as his ex-wife).

Original Trilogy = Lucas and others (Martha Lucas, Gary Kurtz, Irving Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan... and so on) working together, arguing, disagreeing, adapting, coming up with solutions and compromises to create something amazing. All were recognized, all got credit (except his ex-wife...).

Prequel Trilogy = Lucas worked alone, with others like Rick McCallum and Ben Burtt being sycophantic and agreeing with every creative decision he made (or trying to reduce the damage... either way, they failed). Only Lucas is recognized and shoulders the blame, rightly so.

Totally. It seems like Lucas never had anyone to challenge him with the prequels.

Hell, Empire is far and away the best Star Wars movie for me personally, and it's the one that Lucas didn't write and/or direct. I doubt that's a coincidence.

Not quite, Jonathan Hales worked on the screenplay for Episode 2 along with Lucas.

So not like Star Wars at all. :p

Truth be told, I think Duncan Jones would be the man for the job.

I mean you're right, SW is campy in some regards.. but mostly because of the era it was filmed. I like Joss, but when I watch a Joss film it feels like forced campyness.. like MacGyver or The A Team or something.
