I wish i saw those prices in the Tri-state area.

Just saw a gas station at 3.75 and it was like watching a unicorn.

Was pissed i filled my tank at 3.79 early that same day.

There was some sort of weird gas price war here before the election in a couple counties where gas was about 20-35 cents cheaper than everywhere else in the state (and one of the cheapest in the country). It got down to $2.98/$2.99 a gal. Now it's back up to normal for the area.

A couple weeks ago I drove to Vegas and stopped in Tehachapi to fill up. The sign outside said "$3.76" a gallon. I got up to the pump and found it a whole dollar less....

You better believe I filled up.

Bet you were like a thief in the night.

I was listening to Maddow the other day about a lawsuit going on in Cali because of artificially inflated gas prices.

Refineries are the worst. They should be penalized more for this shit.

So if my maths is correct, if I pay £1.33 per litre, then that works out to around $9 per gallon?

Makes me wanna puke.

EDIT - Actually, $10.

I can understand high gas prices in densely populated countries like Germany, France, Japan etc. but when you live in Finland and gas costs 1.7€ per litre (6.4€~$8.3 per gallon) it fucking sucks. We have way lower population density than even US so you have to use car a lot.

Irving, TX $2.95

It's the same in the HEB area. I filled up at a QT at 2.95/gallon this morning. My commute sucks though so it'll be gone by Thursday.

I remember when I was a senior in high school it hit 3 bucks for the first time and a Race Track with one of those huge yellow billboards had to spray paint a puny 3 up there next to the other numbers.

The whole industry is just one huge scam. It's frustrating to even think about.

i'd take a wild guess and say public transit

Public transport isn't all it's cracked up to be. I live about 30 minutes by train from London and an annual train ticket is well over $5000. You can't even get a seat on the train for that money.

Fork 'em, Sparky!
The needle hasn't moved in my area more than a few cents one way or the other in WEEKS. every time it starts to want to go down, some "disaster" or whatever cranks it back up 12 cents or so. Frustrating.

still remember when gas was just above $1 was I was like 5 years old. My little brother and I would watch the price & gallons meter go up as our parents filled up. We'd "race" to see which number ended the highest :p

California gas is the most expensive. I'm always used to seeing gas at least a dollar above national average. Then again, I still don't have to pay for my own gas yet.

Last night it was 2.97 in STL. Was amazed.

This is EXACTLY what the gas companies want. When you are happy to be ONLY paying 3 dollars a gallon for gas.

Gas should not be more than 1.50 a gallon. Even at 1.50 a gallon the gas companies would still be making Billions, just not as many billions. This is why we need regulations, that will never happen.

Just get a 5% cash back on gas credit card. It saves you at least 15 cents per gallon as long as gas prices are $3 or more. You can also combine this with other savings (grocery store gas station rewards or Shell Fuel Rewards Network). I use the Sallie Mae Barclay Card. 5% gas, 5% groceries (incl. wal mart), 5% "books" (i.e. all Amazon purchases). There are rewards caps, but I don't usually spend that much anyway.

Most gas stations charge extra (about 10 cents more per gallon) if paying by credit card though.

This is truth.

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/20...koch-brothers-now-worth-50-billion/?mobile=nc

The Koch Brothers are worth more than 25 Billions each.

I cannot comprehend how someone should "earn" that kind of money. At that point they can burn money and still have some left.

Yet they can't lower the price of gas.

Is beyond stupid.

$2 dollars? I remember when gas was .89-.99 cents a gallon. Time changes.
I was young but I even remember this. Hell I remember just a few years ago, gas prices were around 3.00 and fell all the way down to 1.04..I loved it.

Edit: Here in the South we have a grocery chain WINN-DIXIE and they have a reward card where if you spend a certain amount, you get 5% off your fuel. Or if you buy certain products you automatically get anywhere between 5-15%. I know some people who wait and rack up the percentage so the next time they get gas, it's pretty much free.

I hope that gives the economy a kick . . . . but ironically, if the economy does improve then the price of gas will go up. We are stuck in a self-throttling mess.

$3.57 is the lowest I saw around San Francisco.

How long will the "cheap" gas prices last?

Hopefully they keep going down.

Refineries should be put to task.

Gas prices affect everything. From the prices of goods to our daily lives. Having the "free" market dictate the price is beyond stupid.

Still happy with my Diesel engine car. I pay no road tax because it's so fuel efficient and Diesel costs 15% less than Euro 95. Currently costs 6 Euro cent per kilometer to drive.

63.7% of the retail price (42.7% tax, 21% sales tax)

Interesting. Taxes on gasoline in the US seems to be much lower than taxes in the Netherlands:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_taxes_in_the_United_States
Wikipedia said:
[...] for a total US average fuel tax of 49.3 cents per gallon for gas [...]

And with an average price per gallon of $3.38, taxes account for roughly 14.6% of the retail price in the US ($0.493 / $3.38), a paltry amount compared to the 63.7% portion of the retail price due to taxes in the Netherlands.

Now if we take the average price per gallon in the US and subtract the average tax amount ($3.38 - $0.493), we get about $2.89 per gallon before taxes. If this were only 36.3% of the retail price of gas, as in the Netherlands, and we solve for the total price ($2.89 / 0.363), we get a final price of about $7.96 after taxes.

So, it seems that taxes do indeed account for the entire difference between gas prices in the US and the Netherlands! This worked out better than I thought it would haha.

EDIT:

By the way, this would mean an effective tax rate of about 17.1% on gas in the US ($0.493 / $2.89), and an effective tax rate of about 175% in the Netherlands (($7.96 - $2.89) / $2.89). That makes the difference seem so much bigger, wow.

In Canada I saw it below $1.10 a litre for the first time in ... 5 years?

The gas station by my house is hovering around 1.20. Considering it used to be at 1.35 I'm pretty psyched. That being said I drive my car so minimally that I don't really feel the huge effects of gas prices like everyone else does. Public transportation is my life, the chariot of the proletariat awaits.

Remember the US/EU difference in gallons 3.78LTR US vs 4.54LTR EU.

But yes I bought my first car in 2000 and remember paying .69p LTR= ~£3.20p a gallon. Today I'm paying ~£6 a gallon.

Bomba. I *want* to buy gas, but now I can't help wondering how low it'll go. Clearly it's the aftermath of Black Friday sales. I just hope this bomba won't put Exxon out of business.

Inb4 Europe remarks on how good Americans have it when it comes to petrol prices.

Hey, I normally do that, but I thought it was time for a change, and the thread title was too much fun to riff off.

Diesel costs more in America, or at least it was a while back. It used to be cheaper, but it went up and eventually became quite a bit more expensive. Earlier this year I recall it being around $3.80 here while regular fuel was around $3.30.
