What's the outsourcing you guys are referring to? FUD stuff, or actual game assets?

Also,

I can kind of understand why 343's been in development hell. The original creative director didn't do dick for almost four and a quarter years beyond spitballing forerunner concepts and then they had to push whatever assets they had into a game over the course of only 9 or so months. If that entire team had actually used those five years in full, I can imagine we would have gotten a completely different game.

Please elaborate.

Keep in mind that there are way higher profit margins involved with selling pieces of paper with codes on them versus physical goods...

Halo 4: It's better than being dead
slightly.
Pretty much. I regret buying the LE, both because of how disappointed I was in the game, and because the physical materials included with it rises only slightly above glorified Cracker Jack prize status. Meanwhile the game content and DLC was sliced and diced in a way that made no one happy, even if it were implemented correctly. I fear the lessons 343/MS will take from this are ones of execution rather than strategy, though.

Yep, I don't understand this, we have a huge timeskip between Halo 3 and Halo 4 there could be some really cool stuff in there lorewise, but nope.. Stuff about Palmer informing a rookie, some bullshit about the new armors etc.

Fred, Linda and Kelly .. why are they again nowhere mentioned, in glasslands we have them as big characters and then things died around them.. are they also in a Spartan 3 squad? Why didn't they tried to search for the chief or were onboard of the infinity... some stuff that would be more interesting for me

hahaha that is awesome. Best LE description I've seen yet. I've been hating on those lore materials since I first tore open that shrink wrap. Aside from actual physical goods, I'd much rather have a nice story intro in a game manual than those random fake documents. I loved Frankie's story stuff in the Halo 2 and 3 manuals.

Same. Aside from the Halo 2 LE disc, my favorite piece of Halo LE merch is the Halo 2 manual. It was as amusing as it was insightful, and just fun to read. Meanwhile Halo 4 has no manual at all. And the reason we were given was to save the trees. Um, all the other physical bonus material in the LE is made of paper.

A behind the scenes disc, a mini art book or some such, and a steelbook are basically my dream LE. (The original Gears of War LE was great, aside from the tin it came in.) The emphasis seems to be increasingly turning to digital content for LE's though, which is just accelerating what I think is one of industries worst trends, the slicing and dicing of game content.

For not doing dick for that long they managed to pump out a vastly more polished game then 343i did. So I am not sure why out of all of this you think Bungie is to blame.

MS/343's greed really and truly cost them a lot here, it's apparently the main reason behind the DLC fuck up. It is what caused the whole issue with the spec ops codes, and it has caused countless other problems.

It is very clear that for 343 it is $$$ first and then Gameplay/fans second. With Bungie it was never the case, at least it never came off that way.

Without keeping the fans happy the $$$ will go away though. People hate Activision but they understand this and seem to change CoD based on what the fans want. It's one of the reasons they make so much money off the series. 343 needs to figure this out better.

I just got both these chievos for just dropping down and melee killing somebody. Either a huge glitch or they changed their mind half way and said mancannon is not needed.

Well said. I hate to see you drop out of Halo for Halo 5...intelligent constructive criticism is increasingly rare around here!

I got both at the same time as well...

Thank god.

Especially the melee one.

It's either a glitch or someone at 343 looked at the achievements at the last second and said "wait seriously? wtf are we doing?" and changed them.

Halo 4: It's better than being dead
You know what I mean... I wasn't talking about Halo 4 per se, but about something as insignificant as having to pay for something like DLC while some people got it for free. It's not a "good enough" argument, but a perspective on things worth worrying about and things that are not. The reactions in this thread have ranged from moderate to extreme. Everyone wants to feel validated for purchasing the LE and others want compensation for not getting the crimson map pack for free. If that is the biggest problem you've got going on in your life right now, then all I can do is laugh. Of course, many people who aren't even playing Halo 4 are just loving each new complaint post because it gives them another opportunity to take pot shots at 343 or the game or whatever.

Harvest and Shatter are both amazing, however Wreckage is poor. Compared to the other maps, it is poorly designed, too open, too many vehicles, not enough distinctive sections and the level layout is confusing. It is like seven levels in one, but none of the section are using their streights because of the vastness of the map.

Halo 4 really love their "8" shaped maps. But, then again, Shatter might be the only "8" shaped map that I actually like.

But the framerate and lag in this game still make it an uphill battle to enjoy no matter how you shape it.

No one is saying that this is the biggest problem in their life. Your hyperbole matches that of which you perceive from some posts here.

I think Shatter is a great extraction map, and it works for CTF. Slayer is just okay on Shatter. Harvest I like, but Wreckage... Not a fan. Multiple people have complained about the UNSC buildings, and I agree - it would really be nice to get some differently themed maps with building and structures made out of something other than metal...

I don't think Bungie is to blame. To elaborate: Halo 4 is allegedly being developed at whatever pace after Halo 3. The story is that one team wanted core gameplay to reign (basically the Bungie principle) and one wanted to give Halo fleshing out and make it visceral and cinematic and all that shit, so there was an internal split. The only thing is, Bungie had already laid a little groundwork - "Prometheans" were actually coined in 2007, so most of the innovation was just evolution on whatever existing forerunner concepts they could find. The core team worked on ODST and Reach, while Team Visceral worked on Halo 4. Despite this, we didn't even get formal gameplay until January--regardless of how much was playable, the game itself didn't seem to get off the ground until the creative director left, ironically, otherwise we probably would have heard something in those six months or so between the CGI announcement trailer and the gameplay vidoc.

They should have remade Infinity! I mean hell, it's figure 8-shaped, it's full of power weapons and NOTHING but forerunner architecture and rocks. It's like Halo 4's entire map design philosophy!

As much as it sucks for the LE people, let's not forget about the season pass customers. They already have the game, may have gotten the spec codes for free, then paid 400 points too many over 3 mostly bleh btb maps. That's gross. They get nothing. 343 & MS just make pure profit on an unfinished asset.

And for slightly live and deadly cyclone, all exclusiveness is gone and thats the bottom line thing for which people bought the LE. By the way, I told all my friends and they told all their friends, don't underplay the significance of that as anecdotal, because that's taking it too far to the other extreme

Its a bad idea to have that be your marketing plan anyway; who wants to buy a map that might not sell well? It's multiplayer, you need more players to have fun, don't make that an exclusive club.

Kyle was right, stick to physical items, and do a map pass on the side, separate from the LE.

I was under the impression anyone with a specialisation code could get them for free. Who got the Spec codes? Well MS sent an abundance of those out over XBL to everyone in the US and Austrailia who played before the 20th. Then there are the many people who gave their codes away. The population was highest before the 20th.

Are you suggesting I have no justified reason to feel bad about this? I can understand the mishap just fine and yeah, I feel sorry for 343 and whoever else is worse off.

Surely I can recognise an unfortunate situation and still feel bad about it, right?

The situation is a mess. Let us all be clear on that. It's terrible, especially considering the reputation of a company like Microsoft. They have the time, money and professional talent to get things done and still managed to screw it up.

Accidents happen though and I'm more than confident that the whole mess wasn't in any intentional.

You've a right to be annoyed. But not angry and demanding refunds and claiming your money has been wasted. The bigger picture isn't clear at this point any jumping to conclusion at this point is a bit premature.

The worst thing to have happened so far is LE and season pass buyers having to wait an addition 9 hours to get access to the content, behind the players and customers that didn't spend the extra cash. I'd say folks have a point here, not a major one, to be annoyed.

With that out of the way, as KyleJ and other have pointed out, it only serves to highlight fundamental issues with how Microsoft has been treating it's customers regarding digital content overall.

Microsoft made some big mistakes with DLC and Halo 3/ODST and Halo Wars. Then they made a mistake with Reach's TU and the Anniversary content. Halo 4 is barely out a month and they've already made a small mess out of the DLC here too.

I don't understand how a company like Microsoft can repeatedly make such obvious blunders time and time again.

Dude. MONEY IS EVERYTHING. How do you not get this? Trust is next, and you can't trust these people with your money in advance. How do people look forward to the next two map packs after this?

And you took one sentence out of both of my posts and used it to dismiss it all as hyperbole. Whatevs. There's nothing wrong with trying to talk sense into people or to put some perspective on the situation, which is what Slightly Live keeps doing, but albeit in a way i'm not capable of.

This is exactly how I feel. Harvest looks the best and has a nice feel to it with open areas on each side and foot travel in the middle. Shatter works well too, I like the sniper bases off the teleports, etc. Wreckage is a bit more confusing.

I actually think Harvest feels like it has the flow of a Halo map. Vehicle areas, but also CQC areas where the vehicles can't get to.

Not sure I follow, but I don't really keep up with this stuff like the regulars do. How could there have been two teams working on these two "concepts" when they were separate studios? Or are you talking about the guys that went over to 343 after ODST/Reach were completed?

I had a shit ton of fun last night and I played almost exclusively on the new maps. A big factor in that was that I experienced no lag for the first time in a session of play. I'm actually really excited to play again tonight. I also started using the Light Rifle last night was having fun with it.

Did anyone at 343 listen to it? It's not the most flattering of critiques, though the criticisms are completely well-founded.

I'm sure nothing is posted to the Waypoint blog blindly. I imagine bs angel listens to each episode first, which explains the (understandable) lag in when we release them and when they're posted.

I think it's pretty cool to see the podcast on there despite our occasionally harsh language.

I would certainly hope that any of them that did listen to it realize that any harshness comes from a love of the series and not malice towards the team. It's important to criticize the product, not the people, and I think (hope!) that's what we did on the show.

The 9 hour delay didn't affect me in the slightest. Dropping €90 for the LE only to have it undervalued at every turn most certainly affects me.

One of the main reasons I got the LE was the maps

The only other reason was the specialisation code.

If I lived in America I could have got both for free in one go.

In the LE, the Season Pass code is combined with the Specialisations code as one code in stead of separate, then I think MS just might habe emailed the season pass code to the people who got the Crimson pack for free, thinking it was just a Specialisation code.

Wreckage - Thumbs Up (Chaotic and fun, suites every play-style in the sandbox, nearly every gun is effective on the map. Reminds me of Burial Mounds)

Harvest - Thumbs Up (Good map flow, balanced, solid all around map.)

Shatter - Eh... kinda boring. (Too big, ugly skybox that seems really low resolution, not really any interesting choke points besides Mantis control)

Overall, I'm pretty pleased.

It is what came across in my opinion; a harsh examining of the faults and strengths of the product. I'm a little shocked that such harshness would be promoted on the front page, which is actually quite refreshing.

blawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. sorry everyone. It's that time of the month again where I apologize for my posts. Carry on.

EDIT:

I agreed with your post before it was redacted.

I noticed that a lot of slayer games on Wreckage turned into one team spawning repeatedly on a hill, which was not a lot of fun for me. I agree that Shatter is almost too big, but for extraction and CTF games where there is a focus on where to go, I thought it was okay. Harvest, for being the most uninteresting looking of the three maps, was easily my favorite map, though. I think the size of Harvest really helps.

get a $10 off AC3 code from someone and it will be down to 23

Whoever hasn't bought it should. Not quite as good as ACII, but it's pretty damn fun.

Check out the Buy/Sell/Trade thread for discount codes, a bunch of people were giving them away the last few pages.
