I keep telling myself that I will finally box up Dark souls and move on this Christmas holidays. I'll stop playing it over and over again. And now this.

Yeah I can't stop 100%. On and off I have maybe 250-300 hours between a lot of characters. I stop some runs half way, get others to higher NG+s, I can always think of some build I haven't tried. Doing a FISTS one on the side now.

I hope there's a Unicorn in this game.

They have tons of monsters to play with if considering some of their games (Lost Kingdoms for example has like 226 monsters and actually some might fit well there)

EDIT: Looking at the guide Zombie Dragon for LK its pretty similar to DaS Zombie Dragon and the Berserker gives me Capra Demon vibes.

Extra edit: Monsters from Lost Kingdoms that probably would fit Dark Souls with the right tweaks.

Unicorn- its basically a woman with a horn with horse legs.
Fairies and Sprites- They can be good as they can be evil IMO
Fenril- Sif kinda makes up for that I guess
Behemoth
Lycanthrope
Dryads
Mandragora
Dark Raven
Birdman
Demon Fox
Great Demon
Siren
Salamander
Rheebus
God of Destruction -This could be something amazing for a last boss tbh)
Incubus & Succubus
Garuda
Sekmet
Cerberus
Pazuzu
Demon Swordsman

I wiped all my characters today... for some reason. I felt sick afterwards, but then I just made a new character. lol.

I was tired of forgetting where I was and what I was doing across all the different builds. So now I'll just force myself to finish one at a time.

I did that when the DLC came out, because most of my builds were changed anyway.

I'll add some avatars in.

Just steal some monsters from Berserk.(I'm saying this in the nicest way possible)

They got heavy influence last time, and the skeleton wheels for Dark Souls.I want this beast.

You do realize that the Iron Maiden was something that existed in the real world outside of the Berserk comic right?

I never noticed the engraving on the helmet. On one side is a dragon breathing fire, and on the other is a humanoid with what looks like another dragon at his side. If this is a prequel, I wonder if that's supposed to be Seath.

I dont think they will go THAT far.

On a side note, I hope they add some more Kings field eastereggs... :D

Fuck easter eggs I want a whole new Kings Field game lol.

Though I think the Shadow Tower series would do slightly better as it was pretty unique. Abyss the one that didnt come out in the US was badass. Got the other titles too, but from that series I found Abyss to be the most enjoyable though hard as nails.

You do realize this picture existed long before this post and that pretty much everything else in it pertains to the situation at hand?

- Hanging cages exist in real life
- Salamanders exist in real life (the manga does link them to fire, but they don't look the same)
- Deformed babies don't even look much alike, the concept isn't original at all
- As previously mentioned, iron maidens are a real thing
- I can give you the giant sword
- Ball of corpses looks very Gustave Doré-inspired but sure

So that makes two out of seven, maybe three if you stretch it with the salamanders. I'm sure they COULD have lifted everything straight out of Berserk, but I'd like to think they have a broader set of cultural influences than that.

Well i mean both take inspiration from dark medieval fantasy, of course they have common elements.

Yes but Miyazaki loads his games with Berserk references and he is clearly a big fan of the series. The Dragonslayer and the Dragon Bone Smasher basically have the exact same description.

A bladeless, thick mass of iron used for smashing.

According to the ancestors of Stonefang's excavators, it's said this weapon was created to face dragons, and is imbued with magic to protect the wielder from fire.

"more a slab of iron than a sword"

The Dragonslayer is also described as bladeless. Gut's just swings it so fast he tears through enemies. The Dragonslayer was also created specifically to slay a dragon.

There's nothing wrong with the Souls series having an apparent inspiration from Berserk, as that's one of the longest running dark fantasy mangas in Japan. There's quite a lot of similarities, so much so that there are Berserk fans who want to see From make a Souls game in the Berserk world.

I for one would have preferred some silly Berserk promotional material in Dark Souls than in Dragon's Dogma, as it seems more fitting there. :p

Those wanting a new Kings Field should look into Project Hell.

Ive heard about that but truthfully to me if its not by the From Software team involved with those types of games Im not really all that interested. Since am a fan of what they create more than the actual title brand itself. Though that does play into the DO WANT factor of course lol

I guess it sort of looks like King's Field, but does it play like it?

Also, what other types of games are like King's Field? I know there's Eternal Ring, Shadow Tower, and Shadow Tower Abyss, but those are all FROM games..

I guess it will be more fast-paced, like Dead Island. But KF came up several times in the thread for it. I never played KF though :)

I actually agree with both of you, but i'm saying that cherrypicking for references, you're bound to find similarities whether they're legit or not, because they both have the same source, regardless.

Ultima Underworld and the spiritial sequel Arx Fatalis are pretty similar in atmosphere and premise.

Right. LotR certainly wasn't the first place I saw mention of a hobbit, so I'm sure things were inspired by Berzerk to that extent. It's just kind of silly to say that From "stole" that content from Berzerk, when the examples provided obviously didn't originate from Berzerk either.

Dark Souls does borrow very heavily from real-life European architecture in some places, though. That is maybe a more valid criticism.

I'm fairly sure the team has most of Miura's work at their disposal in From's offices, but I wouldn't say they stole anything. Playing some parts of Demon's Souls or fighting against Artorias, the inspiration was quite striking though. But it's just that, inspiration. They share a similar vision of a dark and grim medieval tale.

Also, wow at those photos.

Just to be clear: I was never trying to argue that From wasn't inspired by Berzerk since I don't know shit about Berzerk. I was only arguing that the examples provided were really bad. The ones on this page are a lot better though.

what the hell. i didn't know so many people thought gwyn was a shitty final boss
i thought he was fucking awesome

no gimmicks, just a straight up 1v1 fight. he was fucking relentless. it was so good
one of my favorite fights. artorias is up there too, and they're both pretty similar

As much as I get the Berserk influences, it is important to note the differences as well. The soul games are more understated, subtle, less violent and gratuitous. Also beserk still has a very strong japanese style.

If anything the souls games are more in keeping with the tone and themes of european medieval lore.

Eh? I consider the final boss to be the climactic end fight in a game, if the boss that proceeds it is there for story purposes only.

For example, I consider Sin to be the final boss of Final Fantasy X, not Yu Yevon.

I agree. Likewise,
Uroboros
is not Xenogears's last boss and
the 1 on 1 duel with Sephiroth
is not Final Fantasy VII's last boss.

Dark Souls does borrow very heavily from real-life European architecture in some places, though. That is maybe a more valid criticism.

Well, I personally think that referencing awesome, real-life medieval architecture is the opposite of a criticisable act, but to each their own.
