Nintendo recommends opening Wii U and perform system update before gifting to others

To be fair this advice is valid for a pretty large selection of consumer electronics. You sure aren't gonna be playing online on a new PS3 without waiting for an update first.

Maybe if the recipient is older they care if it's been opened or whatever, but a kid just wants to play with it ASAP.
But the PS3 download isn't as large right? And doesn't take an hour?

I have multiple updates take 20-30 minutes on my Xbox in the past, mainly NXE rollouts in Fall/Spring. Granted I am from Australia, but the Wii U took 45 min for me here.

The PS3 is a bigger offender compared to the 3 updates we've had so far on the Wii U.
All the major 360 updates took me no more than 20-25mins in total to download and install. In fact it usually takes longer to download games.

Not bad advice for computer/gaming electronics, in general.

I wish I did the same for my girlfriend's Samsung tablet. All that bloatware confused her and I basically had to delete/hide all of them, then install her favorite apps before she could enjoy it.

Not true! All of the 6 year olds posting here seem to care.

The older, wiser people here aren't getting their panties all twisted in a knot at the thought of someone *gasp* opening the box before they do.
Hell I've already said I'd take one that's been opened, I don't care I just want the damn thing!

Is the "audience" this tweet is aimed at even on Twitter though? I highly doubt anyone who is planning on gifting a WiiU was thinking "oh man maybe I should check the NOA twitter feed" before I wrap this present.

Its just a strange way of trying to notify people and hence the snickering.
Nintendo has 320k followers, of which the tweet is relevant to the following:

1. Adult gamers who have a job, children, and a Wii U waiting under the tree.
2. Young gamers who know they're getting a Wii U for christmas, who then tell their parents about the FW update.
3. Gamers of all ages who know anyone giving or getting a Wii U for christmas, of which I'm sure there are many.

PROTIP: Do NOT unbox the WiiU prior to wrapping it in order to perform the update. In fact, don't even mention it. Just hand over the gift, wait for the person to unwrap, unbox, and install the WiiU. Just as he or she is ready to fire up the WiiU for the first time, knock him or her unconscious, THEN perform the update. It should be about done by the time he or she comes to, just in time to start playing WiiU.

EVERYBODY HAPPY! Best. Advice. Ever.

What an embarrassment. I hope they learn from this launch and don't make such a dumb mistake again.

Well its not really something avoidable unless they somehow manage to get more software done before manufacturing starts as a way to make the patch smaller. Its not really a mistake really.

Guys, you appear to be making Kaijima mad, and he's the most sensible, reasonable and well spoken Nintendo fan I've seen in 30 years. Stop it!

It's also hilarious that you all seem to think only hardcore gamers use Twitter... get out of your fucking bubble, holy shit.

I'm guessing this is a tip to parents. You know, like assembling a bike instead of giving the kids a box.

Pretty much. This is a good tip for a variety of items given at Christmas. If sucks it has to be done but it's not something to single Nintendo out for I think.

As for opening it. So what. Take it out, do the update, and then repackage it. Explain what you did. Kids aren't going to care. What matters is them taking the wrapping paper off. Adults getting one will be happy they don't have to sit through the update themselves. If you are buying the system for someone clearly you are on very good terms with them. Be they family or a very close friend. Doing this is not going to be an issue at all. Period.

...If they take the same amount of length, then the same people will more than likely complain about those systems as well.

This isn't "Nintendo hate".

people have been joking about nintendo's online for years now. acting like these people aren't going to be eager to blow any online-related mistake nintendo makes out of proportion is just a dumb assumption.

EDIT:
Why would anyone mark this tweet as favourite?

probably bots

I (mostly) love the system, and this launch has been embarrassing, but their honesty is admirable. Good advice to parents giving these to their kids. Of course, I don't know how many parents will see this on Twitter.

Pack in an 8 GB USB flash drive that is loaded with the complete OS just before shipping or include it at the store separately. Give it to all owners for free to make installation nearly instant and as a bonus allow it to act as a save card or something. Problem solved...of course that's if Nintendo values the setup experience. Ease of use is why Wii was successful, and Nintendo seems to have forgotten that.

This isn't "Nintendo hate".

Some of it apparently is.

It's actually not that terrible. I was just piling on.

My mom and dad pretty much assembled everything Christmas Eve so I could play it immediately and that was nice of em.

Regardless, I'll take whatever opportunity to rib Nintendo that I can get.

This is just another good reason to not be a Day 1 buyer for any system of this new generation.

Welp, did my best job unwrapping my daughters Wii U she is getting for Christmas and am in the middle of the update. I'm currently about 30 minutes in and just past the half-way mark on the download bar

And this is why I asked to be given it early. Didn't really want to spend all day updating THEN throwing friends on.

I got a PS Vita for my nephew, I opened it, created an account, updated the firmware, redeemed the PS+ code and downloaded some games so it's ready for him to play the moment he opens it... I even charged it.

No sorry, this shouldn't be the case. Sure most everything needs an update to get going but most arent as drawn out and slow as the one on the WiiU. Presents should be nice and sealed for the gift recipient to open.

No one ever said that. Of course there are more than hardcore gamers that use Twitter. How many of those users though will actually take notice of Nintendo's feed though? That's what I was trying to point out.

Gamers are obviously going to react to what they said before the audience that the message was intended to.

So it's a dumb assumption to think that people wouldn't like 30+ minute updates period (no matter the system)?

Every console does this shit now so people are probably used to it.
People want more and more stuff in a console and one AAA game per month so this is the result. Its not very thrilling putting a new game into a system anymore because you have to sit through at least 20 minutes of this sort of shit, but thats todays gaming reality.

It seems like the OS wasn't done before the systems were sent out so that wouldn't have worked and they aren't going to ship out millions of flash drives just to handle one update that people can do on their own.

What they should really do is parse the update in half or something. It would still take a long time but would be much easier for slower speed users to download. Even better if it downloads both parts at the same time.

So the other night my friends and I are excited to play some Mario Bros. U. We fire up the system and boom! A forced system update (second one). I tried to bypassing it and going right into the game but it wouldn't let me. :/ It took over an hour to download. Nothing kills enthusiasm for a new system like that crap.

i hate updates too but they've become very routine for most people. outside of the PS3 i haven't heard people complaining about updates in like, a decade? i wouldn't think twice if i bought a new phone and had to update it.

do they expect you to open the games too... cause most of those require updates too.....
I did just that on launch day for my daughter.

<---- ahead of the curve

Also...Nintendo...*roll*

there was another update since then..... better unwrap that and re-update buddy.

It's not about updates. Practically all of today's tech devices have updates.

It's the length. 30+ minutes is ridiculous.

Nintendo knows this is embarrassing.

But they know it would be worse for the Wii U to not be ready to use when everyone's families are together on Christmas. They want to prevent bad word of mouth on Christmas day.

No, DO NOT OPEN the box before giving Wii U as a christmas present. People can handle that install time, getting what's practically a second hand / used console is a much, much, MUCH worse alternative. I don't think I would even accept that gift. I know for sure wouldn't be able to enjoy it.
