Instead of eShop discounts, here's an idea that might make a lot of sense for Nintendo. If you acquire 100% of the achievements in a Wii U game, you unlock a bonus 10 coin Club Nintendo survey with questions specifically centred around having played a game to total completion. Kills three birds, as players get achievements, they get tangibly rewarded for achievements, and Nintendo gets additional data from a very specific demographic of hardcore players.

While a nice idea in theory, it would probably backlash just a few days after the system launches. I'm sure you would hear a lot of people complaining endlessly over hard achievements which keep them from 100%ing the game just because "greed Nintendo" doesn't want to give them the 10 coins...

Expecting any significant unveils or announcements seems like setting one's self up for disappointment.

I bet this is just some trailers of upcoming releases in the next few months, maybe some eShop news, and that's about it. If Bayonetta 2 isn't coming until the end of the year (if it's this year at all), I don't see why they wouldn't just hold that until E3.

With the current state of WiiU sales, they need to ensure they are pushing current, relevant content to hold the system over until the summer months.

I think that we care about E3 far more than Nintendo does. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually stop turning up for it.

Look at Pokemon X+Y, for example. That would have been an E3 Megaton. The game isn't coming until the end of the year.

E3 is the gaming event with the biggest non-gaming journalism coverage. No way in hell. I guess they just split their announcements more and more. "Core gamer" announcements at NDs, more "casual" stuff at the E3.

I'd honestly be cool with release dates for Q2 games for now but I'm interested to see what services they are working on.

yeah 10 is a bit low for such an endeavour, but I was just being conservative :)

It's a good idea though. Giving 'incentive' for achievements is long overdue.

Imagine if they doubled the value of your original point total? Seems like a good way to encourage people...

That would be the worst possible line-up aside from Smash. Again, those are games so few people would care about. Only the most hardcore of Nintendo fans. I get the feeling it might be something like this through.

Given the relatively low sales of the Wii-U and the urgency Nintendo is feeling to boost sales, I don't feel like now is the time Nintendo will try to revive cult classic games. They should be concerned with bringing in the better selling franchises, and maybe an innovative new IP.

Even though that is generally true, you also have to factor in that tens of millions of gamers tune in to E3 for game/ hardware announcements, and if you're a company that spends 60% of your time talking about casual games instead of hardcore games you're going to get lambasted by every single game-centric website on the planet.

Ubisoft, Sony, EA, and to a degree Microsoft understand this. Nintendo... you never know what you're going to get. E3 2007 and 2008 were awful. E3 2010 was killer, just completely awesome. E3 2011 was pretty sweet as well. E3 2012 was terrible. Hopefully 2013 is a good year like '10 and '11.

30 minutes is fine unless it's like e3 where they go

we have 40 minutes to show all this stuff so we'll get right on it *proceeds to stall time in the worst manner possible*

and don't worry our 3ds conference is gonna be separate from the wii u one cause we have so much stuff to show *proceeds to talk about 3ds games anyway in the most stretched way possible*

I look forward to this, though I won't be able to view it until tomorrow night, well after whatever will be revealed has been.

I am one of the seemingly few GAF members very content with the Wii U Software thus far - though I currently only own a Wii U (I am somewhat of a casual gamer now) and the Wii U launch software has me very satisfied, in addition to Wii backwards compat.

Hopefully for the more core oriented gamers, this ND will give more reason for gamers to jump aboard. Its an excellent system and the UI truly feels "next gen" imo.

The worst was E3 2011. Hey you want to see some games? Well here's an orchestra that will play Zelda songs for half the conference.

Iwata: *laughs*

Fire Emblem?
It needs to be Fire Emblem.
Really. It would be awesome with the controller.
Everyone loves FE.

Er, I need more SRPGs.
More, I say.
Better FE than some fitness game.
Layton I'm not too fussed about either.
Even Link can wait..
Mario can also sit on the bench for a while.

Yeah 30 minutes is enough for some big reveals.

If they're going to show major stuff, it will be more of a tease than anything, probably. Short trailers, bits of info, just enough to build a little hype.

Too much milking isnt good either.

Odd time to make an issue of this.

I got my launch Mario game,

I didn't, however. I want 3D Mario.

so focus on other IPs for now.

They'll come. More Mario doesn't prevent this.

Yeah, really unreasonable to reward early adopters with a dozen or so antiquated titles.

No. It's unreasonable to expect to be rewarded for the misfortunes of early adoption.

I am hoping the Virtual Console service for WiiU is announced. If I have to re-purchase anything, I am going to be pretty ticked off.

THIS

I'm mainly interested in the Gamecube VC though, and I hope they not only announce it, but I hope it launches soon. There is no reason they can't have that working at this point.

Hype dead again. They already need way too much time to cover all that lame delayed stuff.

Most of the Nintendo Direct's always end up more than 30 minutes from what I remember, and they don't need to spend time on every game announcement, they could do that for after, example what the 3DS Direct's usually get when they are done when they usually show off more of the games they announced.

Thanks for reminding me how unorganized that conference was. I think Nintendo has learned their lesson though, and rightfully so.

They could have 30 min direct. Then something after it who knows. Hype re-established!!!

I feel it. I FEEL IT.

Wasn't StarFox 3D a relatively low/mediocre seller?

Look, if Nintendo wants to give their B-list franchises another chance to shine, utilize the eshop for that purpose! Instead of spending million$ on a retail title for franchises like Starfox, F-Zero, Ice Climbers etc. give them all new games designed for the eshop. If one sells exceptionally well, then consider making a full fledged title for that franchise. Nintendo can essentially test the waters with the eshop without all the *risk* involved in creating a blockbuster game that has flop potential.
