VG247 understands that British studio Sumo Digital is currently working on LittleBigPlanet 3.

Sony and Media Molecule apparently approached the developer to make the third main title in the build-and-play franchise, which has now been in the works for “well over a year”.

We were initially contacted in relation to an LBP petition conducted by fan site LBP Central, which aims to increase the level of moderation in the current games.

LittleBigPlanet has been referred to today as a “no-man’s land,” following a supposed increase in “death threats, hate speech, stalking, hacking and cyber-bullying.” The petition calls on LittleBigPlanet moderators to step up their involvement in the community to put an end to the abuse.

One source claimed that the lapse in moderation is related to Media Molecule turning its attention to Tearaway, with ongoing LittleBigPlanet development being outsourced to Sumo.

Another source confirmed that Sumo is, indeed, working on LittleBigPlanet 3. The game’s formats are unknown.

Sumo was responsible for LittleBigPlanet 2′s cross controller patch last year, which allowed Vita to be used to control the main game.

Hmm. Sumo is a pretty good studio, but they're mostly known for Racing games... I wonder how they'll do with a platformer?

Edit: Plot thickener -

Twitter super sleuth, Supererogatory, has spotted that Split/Second: Velocity and Sonic Racing developers, Sumo Digital are working on an exclusive title for the PlayStation 3 due out in 2013.
The news comes by from the CV of Naomi Summerscales, a freelance video editor and motion graphics artist (linkedin) at Sumo Digital.
According to her CV, she is “currently working as the Creative Vision Holder on a Sony PS3 game due for release in 2013.”

A PS3 game? I hope not.

I have a feeling a huge part of the charm of LBP is there because of MM. I like Sumos games but I don't think its the right fit for LBP.

Weird rumours.

Honestly not sure how interested I am in another LBP for PS3.

I would be interested, depending on what's new, in LBP for PS4. It should be on the next platform, but hopefully with some breakout ideas.

But I am a lot more keen on knowing about MM's new project.

PS3 makes sense.
LBP should not entice many hardcore gamers to buy a PS4, especially if Sony's strategy is to launch fast, launch hard and try and reclaim some of the XBOX population.

I wonder if, after PS4 has released, Sony will keep the PS3 alive with HDer ports of VITA games to keep both plateforms somewhat alive.

The PS3 is being retargeted as a family platform for when the PS4 is out so this fits with that strategy.

I hope this is true just so MM can work on something else. 2D platforming is really not their thing.

Hope to be a PS4 title to be honest.

I have the GOTY LBP and LBP2 on my HDD thanks to PS +

I've never finished them, my lady likes the game but when she starts playing a level it's just another "oooh let me change their clothes again!" And that's LBP for her. Lol.

I imagine they will be amicably parting ways with Sony and moving to iOS games shortly after that then. :p

Seeing the Tearaway game I think that is the direction LBP should have gone, in fact it looks and feels like a reskinned LBP. A third person platformer would have been great.

Yeah, fits with the strategy well. It would allow Sony to continue to push ps3 as a family device, though who knows how successful that effort has been so far. I imagine not very! As long as mm is doing something else.

Sumo is good, LBP need a good developer who can do good physics and not rubbish physics.

I for one welcome this.

Please not PS3... I enjoy them both ( as well as the vita version, which is probably the best IMO), but i'm more interested in what they can do with better hardware. We really don't need another one on PS3 :/ If that's their plan, I won't be buying it.

I suppose so. But I wonder how different they'd make another PS3 LBP. I think feel like with the new tools in the Vita version etc. ... where to next, without significant new changes or additions?

little big flop if this is a ps3 2013 title

with the engine in place and a tight schedule, the game does not have to sell lots.
Sony simply needs to keep the PS3 alive for as long as PS4 inks its financial statements in red.

PS3 will definitely be repurposed as "cheap" media box. think some games, them blu-rays and dat Netflix/Hulu/Sony Online Entertainment combo.

Whereas PS4 is supposed to be the weapon forged in the pits of rising development budgets Hell Kaz will use to slash M$ out of the hardcore gaming landscape.

It makes since its for the PS3 since its been development l for awhile it seems.

It could also be a PS3/PS4 title, but I doubt they can handle so much work though.

So is Sega All Star Tennis featuring Sonic & Friends and every other project Sega has given them.

The sonic allstars racing games are fantastic and totally their area of expertise and the best kart & arcade racers released this gen

I love me some LBP.
But now that they've shown they could do it on Karting, I want a full 3D platform creation toolset.

but, can they fix the physics and the jump?

Not only did they allow you to completely edit the jumping physics in 2, in LBP Vita they tightened ip the jumping by default. I never had trouble with the jumping though, and they probably won't change the overall physics because those are based on REAL physics and that's how building stuff in the game is founded upon.

Like others have said, Sony is positioning the PS3 as a family system as they move the hardcore on to the PS4. Any LBP at this point would do better on PS3 with its larger and more diverse install base.

No, please.

It's all good really,I don't see any problem here,it sound like just a small project for them, also Sumo at least will turn LBP to real platformer (which is a good thing) since MM can't do real platforming phsysics and jumping even if their lives depend on it.

Makes sense to bring family to the cheaper option.
I hope they try some innovation though; Puppeteer looks interesting.

I just noticed this quote. Lol, how weird. Seems completely incongruous with LBP's cute and fluffy aesthetic.

Doesn't sound too far-fetched I guess. Sony typically doesn't ditch their old console upon the release of a new one like the other guys do, and all signs seem to point to Mm making a new IP for the PS4.

The only shaky thing is Sumo's involvement rather than a studio like Tarsier. You think they would have got them to make LBPKarting rather than the next main installment.

If true, I hope it's LittleBigPlanet 3D.

yeah i don't really mind. if they make a good lbp game like scee cambridge or tarsier did then that's great for the series, if they don't *shrug*, either way it frees up media molecule to do more new stuff without ending the series.

Oh Sega, just give them Outrun 3 already.

yeah. let them do a next gen outrun sega pls
