Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

I was a huge 360 fan until I made the switch to PC gaming even though I own the PS3 as well. It really seems like MS doesn't want me to be a fan anymore. I've got over 40 games for the 360(as opposed to my meager 6 games for PS3) GabeN is gonna love me for the foreseeable future.

Hope you're not running Windows.

It is shameful to condemn a feature without knowing it's context or purpose.

Nobody on this forum or any other forum is without Internet access. You are not protesting the feature due to lack of access.

Nobody ever said Microsoft were requiring a good Internet connection, just that you had to have one. For all we know the features that they are requiring this for could be achieved on a 2G cellphone network.

Missing the point entirely. It doesn't matter if we're posting to the internet right now. As it is if my connection drops for a day, I can't play my 720 games for the course of that day. "That sucks," you say: Yeah. But what if it's longer? PSN outage meant you couldn't play DRM-titles like Final Fight's remake because it required logging into PSN servers which were turned off completely.

Same thing here: If my connection drops for longer than a day I can't play any of my titles if this rumor of the 720 requiring online is true. This is what has people up in arms. Not the "joke" tweets themselves.

Ill hold judgement until MS officially states whether its always online or not. But always online would mean a skip unless they somehow manage to get a exclusive Resident Evil or Metal Gear Title (Only games ill buy a console for)

I just woke up. The fallout in this thread is amazing. maybe you should wait untilnthe console launches before proclaiming never to buy a Microsoft product again? or at least wait till one game is shown?

Did you have the same attitude when Sim City launched and no one could play? Now, imagine a console launching worldwide with milions trying to get online to play a dozen different game. Yeah, this is going to be just smooth.

Remember when Romney waited to get in front of the Todd Aiken comments? Remember when he struggled to explain his position?

By how much did Obama win women?

MS needs to address this.

lol @ gamers who are threatening a console boycott.

L4D2 boycott. We all know how effective that was. Gamers just talk the talk.

Microsoft must be working pretty damn hard to spin always online as not horrible to make any comment on this at all about always online.

Or maybe they realise there is nothing they could say that could spin it in a positive light.

We are just discussing the rumors. It's up to MS to give us more info/context, and they haven't yet (for obvious reasons). For all we know this could all be false, but right now all we have to discuss is the rumor that the system will require you to be online, and so that's what we're discussing.

Yes, I have internet. My internet also goes out because Mediacom sucks like that in my area. And in this situation I wouldn't be relying on just my internet, I'd be relying on MS servers, and those have gone down before.

Plain and simple, I won't buy a system that won't let me start a game without being connected to the internet. I'll bitch about it all day fucking long on the internet if I want, too.

So eh, what if MS's always online simply means you don't have access to all the main content. But a single player game, registered previously in an internet up day, is perfectly usable offline?

Well, you can go back to gamespots system wars. Microsoft entering te gaming industry is probably the best thing to happen despite there always online strategy. Them failing next gen, which I doubt, will only push its competitors. I'm sure they have went through every scenario that could happen, so they will definitely have something special planned for the next Xbox.

Microsoft definitely contributed great things to the industry and I loved my XBox and X360, but I am not if I would call them the "best" thing that can happen for gaming judging by the direction they have been going in gaming.

I actually asked for a refund for that when I found out about the online-only DRM. Surprised that I actually got it. But yeah, people should definitely asked for one if they don't want to support this kind of BS.

I can't help but feel like the widow is wide open for Sony or Nintendo to capitalize on this mini lapse in judgement and strike with some positive news of their own in the next few days. What that could be, I don't know, but let this PR steep in over the weekend and then come out with something sensational.

Man, it bugs me that people are reporting this as "Microsoft's Creative Director" like it's a high-level position that they only have one of. It's not an entry-level job, sure, but it's not like this guy is The Creative Director of Microsoft(TM), or even The Creative Director of Microsoft Game Studios(TM). Microsoft has like 300 of 'em, judging by LinkedIn.

I love it.

We are social beings and the Internet is our main means of connecting now. Connecting games to the Internet sells more copies and makes more money.

Try posting on GAF during the Durango reveal or E3 about how everyone is always online. Your internet connection will be fine... but that doesn't mean the other end of the internet is.

Never underestimate the casual and hardcore gamer, Nintendo already figured this out for Wii U's launch.

Going in with arrogance is never a good thing.

First they canceled the family plan now this shit? I guess MS really doesn't want this famliy man, that currently owns 3 360's and has purchased over 250 games but lives in a rural area, to buy anything from them next gen.

My daughter spent a year in a dorm at college where she couldn't get online because the school didn't allow it with their firewall. I've also taken one of my 360's on trips where even if I had internet available at the hotel/timeshare unit I wouldn't want to pay to hook it up. He needs to get out his ivory tower and see how the rest of the world lives.

But that's ok, I can deal with it. I have a pretty nice gaming PC and a huge backlog of games to play that will work just fine on my current offline consoles.

Hmm.... May be this is not the best example, but I have seen this sentiment reaped several times in this and other threads. Folks who'd rather stick with PC because next Xbox is looking like shit. And yet PS4 is not even in consideration. This is just an observation, but if this is reminisce of Sony's past, then they have a very tough battle, even against such hubris displayed by Microsoft.

PS: I apologize to larvi if using your comment as an example offended you!

I dunno, I'd say their entrance was one of the best things to happen to console gaming. Online gaming, DLC(for good and bad), Netflix and strong hardware have massively influenced Sony and we'd be foolish to not see that Sony is taking a lot cues from them.

So eh, what if MS's always online simply means you don't have access to all the main content. But a single player game, registered previously in an internet up day, is perfectly usable offline?

If I can play the single player without having to be online (after a one time activation even) I'll be completely happy. That doesn't seem like a crazy request, either. So if they won't give me that, I won't give them my money.

The twitter conversation points out a key problem with tech writers: They all live and work in major cities and have no clue what internet connectivity is like in rest of the country.

I get what you're trying to say there, but you are falsely trying to pretend like he can maintain being a gamer that wants to play wide release console / pc games and run Linux or IOS...you simply can't.

Poor guy. His tweets, which for most people amount to nothing more than brain farts, might result in his termination. If this console always online AND you can't play games offline turns out to be true then the market forces will inevitably give Sony the lead. There is no reason to publicly lynch some corporate guy for understandably being defensive about a policy set forth by the whole company that he works for.

Then people wouldn't be as up in arms, I feel.

The rumor is that no matter the mode, the 720 REQUIRES you to be online. That's what the problem is for most people. The Bioware dude mentioning Diablo 3's online issues (esp. in regards to trying to play that singleplayer) and SimCity (which you can't play offline despite the fact it could be completely modded to play offline) shows examples of the very thing that MS is rumored of trying to do.

People that went through that (or saw it) is why this thread has blown up and the internet that has picked up on this is up in arms. Were you not there for the SimCity fiasco weeks back? That is the same thing here if MS's servers are down or your connection is down due to week-long maintenance or other acts of god.

God damn this topic blew up, I was only on like page 4-5 a couple hours ago and boom, but yea, always on-line sucks. It was around this time yesterday that my internet cut out randomly while streaming on my PS3, to think if I was playing a game and that it would have stopped because of something that just isn't as reliable as I would like worries me.

I wont pretend that I wont get a 720 or whatever it is called, but like this one and previous I will go with Sony's system first and catch up on others later.

Blizzard is not exactly a small publisher. And admitting that they screwed up in one feature (that was the main reason for the implemation of that DR) is not exactly a small deal...

It's not, your right, but it also doesn't speak towards the future, either. We're talking about a year old PC port. And DRM was (and still is) the least of Diablo 3's problems.

He's lynched himself, brah. How about you don't go on Twitter and talk about a product you're working on that hasn't been announced? He isn't exhibiting a very professional attitude. He should deal with whatever consequences come about.

Yeah you are definitely wrong. You do realize he's being lynched because of the WAY he is defending these policies right??? Name calling, etc. The guy is being a complete dick to the very consumers who support the company he works for.

He deserves everything he gets.
