Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

No thanks, I think we'll just keep discussing his response to the thread topic in this thread.

The thread topic is "Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online" not "Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online and Arthur Gies is a Microsoft shill".

Yes, that's why Gies to told everyone buy a PlayStation 4 instead.

Come on folks, we only use, like, 10% of our brain power. Stop shaming it by using even less when trying to bash one person who has nothing to do with this ordeal to begin with. :/

Dude, stop defending that asshole. He has history beside that one tweet.

I asked this in the other thread but how do MS market this?

That's exactly what is so shitty for them right now. I'm sure they obviously have a plan on how to unveil this in a positive light by attaching it to all kinds of new features. But, now all we're left with is our imaginations which tend to go to "worst case scenario" levels. And it's not like they can move up a fucking console announcement. Just going to have to weather the storm for now until the scheduled go time.

The thread topic is "Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online" not "Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online and Arthur Gies is a Microsoft shill".

Oh, I agree with the shill part. Odd time to throw that out there when he's telling us to go buy PS4s. But, they are still discussing his tweet in response to this whole situation.

Neither MS nor Sony stop them from being online-only right now, either. Remember that some games come with online passes to unlock online content, so theoretically, a publisher could put the entire game behind one and not sell an online pass to unlock the game. Boom, instant CD Key.

Besides, it is better for publishers and developers to have the choice to use always online DRM than to have them forced to use it. Even if I don't agree with always online DRM, you can't say that having the choice to utilize or not utilize it is bad.

I agree. I think there's something being lost in translation here, but until Microsoft announces we won't know for sure.

Wait a sec.

That's his personal twitter account and he can say anything he wants on it. He's not speaking for Polygon and If you want him to treat the story with respect and insight, read something official from Polygon itself.

That's an important distinction about people's personal twitter accounts. Even Major Nelson, who's account was set up as a voice for Microsoft live, still say shit that's not remotely Microsoft focused all the time. The interesting thing is that Adam Orth spoke to rumours about the new xbox and because he works for MS, and major shit happened. But anything that comes form twitter that's not official PR stuff is suspect to me and to be taken as a single persons perspective.

This shit is getting out of hand.

Then don't have polygon plastered all over your twitter? It's Polygon themed lol. I'd say journalists etc unfortunately are held to such standard in both articles and on public forums, and that's the way it should be imo.

Yeah, some of you are probably more emotionally enraged about everyone involved than you should be. I'm not sure the dude deserves to be fired or whatever. But it sure is fun to follow!

The posts laughing at him maybe losing his job are fairly off putting, even if he came off as a huge douchebag, but it really is also amazing that he didn't see something like this coming posting crap like that out there in the public, we all make mistakes but that is extremely naive.

I don't think the vast majority of Xbox owners know or understand what DRM is suppose to be. It's not gonna effect the next Xbox as much as you guys think.

Well once people start to wonder "Why the hell is my Xbox not playing games? Wait, I need an Internet connection at all times? This is BULLSHIT!" They will start to share this problem with others, causing negative word of mouth, and loss of potential sales.

Then maybe he shouldn't have polygon branding plastered all over it, huh?

If you don't like the criticism of Gies so what? there are other threads out there, go to another one.

Bahaha!

Always online, update without you saying anything, gather news, Facebook posts, twitter etc whilst you're away etc etc. Gimmicky stuff that it should be able to do when you sign on, and stuff you don't need to just play a game.

In any case, I'm still hoping they change their mind.

Sounds about right. Combine it with exclusive DLC for all the big shooters, and a cheaper price and it may just work.

Fascinating isn't it?

Worse part is that MS literally did NOTHING to squash the rumors even before yesterday and now they're reaping what they've sowed.

There was a (slim, yes) chance they could've announced always-online in a relatively painless manner, but with this guys jackass comments, any chance of that has been shot straight to hell and back.

Because it doesn't matter. If their Next Xbox doesn't have always online DRM, then squashing the rumors now and properly announcing their new platform at a later date have exactly the same end result. Bad publicity based on rumor alone is a non-issue, because people aren't going to refuse to purchase a console based on negative perception that was proven false.

Defending Gies and then spouting nonsense like "we only use 10% of our brain power"

I asked this in the other thread but how do MS market this?

It will be part of the underlying strategy of the console. The ability to always talk to your friends, jump in and out of other folks games. Download movies and music while you sleep. Schedule downloads from your phone to your Xbox. The list goes on and on...

EA introduced Project $10. They certainly could do it right now if they wanted to do so.

If Microsoft and Sony allowed them to, yes.

Maybe the next Arkham Batman will stick the entire game behind a code instead of just Catwoman missions. And maybe Microsoft and Sony will certify that game.

But you state that anybody can stick an entire single player disc-based PS3 and 360 game behind a code, right now, but you can't say that. Because you don't know if Sony and Microsoft would certify the title. Until that happens, you don't know.

They could allow all that without requiring the system to be online to start your games up.

Got his info from Linkedin. He founded Iron Galaxy Studios. There's a good chance he might be working on a PS4 / Durango project.

Anyone else getting an 'aggressive ear-whispering hand-job uncle' vibe from that forced nickname?

Sweet Billy? Damn.. That shit is creepy...

With as fast as the story is spreading, I wonder how long until it gets broadcast on tv?

That would be the final straw for Microsoft's silence, I think.

That 10% of your brain stuff is a myth.

You could, but it would be more convenient to never have to even think about the status of the console.

Whether that's worth the trade off of potential interruptions in service, that's up to Microsoft to justify to consumers.

Think of how many people don't even bother to immediately hook up their console to the internet out the box. They are going to be so fucking confused.

That doesn't sound too bad actually.

But it definitely should be an option, not mandatory.

What? I never think about the status of my consoles now. When I turn them on, they are online. If online is unavailable for some reason, they still play games.

Yeah, and Sim City can be played without the servers. What's that have to do with how Maxis sold it?

Well honestly if anyone gives money to this anti consumer bullshit, they deserve their brick of a console. I'll never buy a forced online game again after the shame that was Diablo 3. I'll never buy a forced online console either. I did 20 years in the Navy and spent many years without Internet on deployments. Always on consoles are anti-military IMO. People need the diversion over there.
