PSP in 2013 - The End?

How do psp games look on the vita? Still have my 3000, is it worth it to upgrade to vita mostly for the psp games?

It's not as good as I hoped. If you haven't played a game a lot on the PSP you probably couldn't tell, but the colors are somewhat different, especially yellow, on the Vita it takes on an slight orange cast. So gold coins sort of look like cheese, sand looks a bit more like dirt.

Definitely keeping my 3000. Though of course, considering I have 50 umds and only about half my PSN games work in the Vita, easy choice.

I'm definitely excited for Black Rock Shooter.

FF Type-0 should be on that list for US folk

Hopefully we hear something about it once FFXIV gets released

It's still a vibrant and viable platform in Japan, the total opposite of how it's doing in the US. New PSP titles get continually announced while the Vita is starved for new software. It's incredibly frustrating to me, since I own both a PSP-3000 and a Vita. I find myself playing my PSP more than my Vita!

So...I don't think the PSP will die this year, it has at least a couple of years of life left in Japan.

PSP definitely won't die as long as I'm alive. So many great RPG's (and DJMAX and Monster Hunter)!!

If it dies now, it will have lived a more successful and prosperous life than most other systems have. It had a great run, a great library, and it was the first legitimate non Nintendo handheld ever. It was my second most favorite system of its gen, behind only the DS, and I absolutely adored it.
Now get its successor back on track, Sony :p

PSP and the Wii had the weirdest system runs ever. Type 0 is all I care about now, although I wouldn't mind Persona 2.

I believe- and I might be wrong, so please feel free to correct me- that the PSP has always been selling at a steady level on a worldwide basis? As in, when its sales in Japan plummeted, it was still doing good in the west, and when it started to die off in the west, it got its Monster Hunter fueled resurgence in Japan. I think its overall sales levels were largely consistent, meaning that it was just a system that was a slow burner, unlike the Wii, which bounded out of the gates to begin with, sprinted like nobody's business, got an asthma attack, keeled over, and barely managed to limp over the finish line panting.

Broke my PSP trying to fix it today. Limited edition version too.

Such good times we had, yet strangely I don't feel too sad. I'll get a new PSP with time and keep this one around for the Darth Vader design on the back. Love engravings on handhelds

Looks like I'm keeping my psp, thanks.

You have the option to set the colors to the PSP color space I think? It might be on by default because I set it to the Vita color space which improves the image quite a bit.

Man, I used to want that Darth Vader PSP so bad! Have only ever had boring black PSPs though. :p

I would never get rid of my PSP (due to the lack of full backwards compatibility) but I vastly prefer playing PSP games on my Vita now. Have barely touched my 3000 since the Vita launched, it's just a much better experience overall.

I really, really, really need to get Corpse Party: Book of Shadows some time soon. Especially if it means better chances of a CP2 localization.

And BRS looks pretty good, too. I don't know anything about how it plays though, so I'll hold my tongue on that.

PSP, it's been a good run.

Busy week for PSP next week: Hakuouki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi and Generation of Chaos: Pandora’s Reflection are coming to PSN next week, and today Aksys Games announced Sweet Fuse.

Edit: Both Hakuouki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi and Sweet Fuse are getting UMD releases. Mind blown 2013.

PSP has been home to the games I enjoyed and grew accustomed to over the years. That its still going even in the US just brings a smile to my face. Still have games I need to get around to, so even if we get no more, I have enough to last me quite a while. Would love to get my hands on a White PSP Go (GB Micro equiv.) and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd SE PSP(because it looks awesome) one of these days......

PSP is a beast. It has arguably the best library of any portable ever. And that is pretty much a lock if you are in Japan with the ridiculously huge library.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
And yet still no Last Ranker or Eternal Punishment localization announcements. *sigh*

Updated with Black Rock Shooter's April release date. Hakuouki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi doesn't look like it's doing too well, it has 3 reviews on the SEN store, compared to Generation of Chaos's 29 and Corpse Party:BoS 418 reviews. They did a physical release of Hakuouki as well :/

Hakuoki isn't available on the Vita store, the other two games you mentioned are.

Carnage Heart EXA is dated for March 19 btw.

My PSP-3000 is en route as we speak.

When I was ordering it from Amazon it said that "this product is no longer manufactured" or something to that extent. I don't recall them ever officially announcing end of production, but it may just be Amazon.

It may have just been the particular SKU that you bought that isn't being manufactured anymore.

I saw a few 3000's left at my local Target for $99. I was actually interested in re-buying a vita but this is more tempting. With the exception of P4G. Everything I want to play is PSP or PSOne classics (I have a ton and I know vita doesn't play them all) the PSP does play all classics right? I really want tactics orge as well.

May just plunge on this and buy vita @ price drop.

EDIT: Actually amazon route with no tax seems even better.

Yeah, PSP plays all PS1 classics -- and if you do TV-out, it plays them at their original resolution, too!

Actually, there are a tiny handful of PSone Classics that for whatever reason aren't playable on PSP. There's a Star Wars game, and some other stuff (Pocket Fighter?).

Oh. I had no idea.

Still, I haven't run into any the PSP can't play, so I'm guessing there aren't tooooo many. Because I own a LOT of PS1 classics. ;)

Like with incompatible PSP/PSone games on Vita, Sony just keeps them off the PSP storefront. You'll only run into these games browsing the PSone Classics section on PS3.

PSP also doesn't have true analog stick support. It sucks for games like Parasite Eve.

Why can these niche companies release PSP games but SE can't release Type-0 if it's already localised? What have they got to lose by doing a PSN release that is playable on the PSP and Vita? They'll at least get some return on their investment for minimal effort and more importantly they'll regain a lot of good will amongst their hardcore fan base as well.

I'd love to see these devs work on Vita games after these games release. Would love to experience these type of games on the vibrant OLED screen in qHD. Definitely getting the Black Rock Shooter game, when it comes out. Will most likely be my last new PSP game purchase, if I can play it on my Vita. My PSP went missing a year or so ago and I never got to finish a couple games I bought physical copes of, sadly. :(

Because Square Enix believes they can port it to another platform and make more money that way. If they release it for PSN (PSP/Vita) they'll have pirates devour it, with the rest of the world ignoring its existence. When Square Enix decides to port it to a healthier platform, that release will have diminished importance because the game would already be available in English.

It needs to be stated that most of the games being localized for PSP actually predate the launch of Vita. Carnage Heart EXA was actually a 2010 release in Japan.

just updated the op, only 3 more announced games to come, though I think Natsume has more in the pipeline, and there's the Elminage II/III/IV rumor as well.

Thanks for TAC, Takao :D

I would say this is the end but I know better than that. Every time I say game/year X is the swansong of PSP some crazy publisher comes from the shadows and farts in my face.
