John Carmack (on PS4/XB1): "I won't recommend one over the other at this point"

This surely doesn't tally up with how we've been comparing the specs so far, with PS4 having the obvious advantage.

Or is he just staying neutral like Switzerland for commercial reasons?

PS4 has the obvious 50%+ spec advantage, but that doesn't mean endorsing one platform over the other would be wise for a person like Carmack that wants to sell games on both platforms. He can't speak freely on this matter, he's employed by Bethesda.

You're making something out of nothing.

Infinite power of the cloud. And he probably just thinks both are equally shitty compared to Kepler, Maxwell, Volcanosomething.

Well, they're making Doom 4 for both, but I doubt that's why, they were making Rage for both last time and he was very open about the differences.

I think he's saying the PS4 isn't some monstrous leap over the X1. A good developer can make great games on either.

Having one game looking marginally better in some area isn't some big deal. Wasn't a big deal this gen, will be even less of a deal next gen.

The biggest deal to me is that XBOX left behind DVDs and have higher capacity media for games.

Every western developer wanted a closed x86 box and they got two. Nothing to complain about anymore.

Very diplomatic. A better question, which couldn't be answered properly over twitter is what he feels are the strengths and weakness of each system, technically.

We all know the PS4 has superior hardware under the hood, however if there is one guy I could trust to make a new game look incredible no matter the specs it's this guy.

Bet he got some personal threa... err um I mean reminders from Sony and MS that whatever comes out of his mouth is taken as law by some.

Actually, he probably can't comment right? Last time he could, because the first parties themselves released all the specs, this time they didn't, wouldn't he be breaking NDA if he commented about the hardware?

Exactly. But some...gamers...become obsessed with their console of choice having better specs. It makes them feel better somehow. That "my dad can beat up your dad" complex. And they desperately crave a developer to crow about how that console is the undisputed "best".

PS4 has more raw power than the X1. That doesn't translate to "the X1 is crap and PS4 games will make it look like crap".

The fact that we're still in the phase of dick-measuring is disturbing. In the entire history of gaming, having better specs have never been a harbinger of success or "winning"

Sega Master System was more powerful than NES. NES won (with monopoly)
SNES was more powerful than Genesis. Essentially tied.
XBOX more powerful than PS2. PS2 dominated (wasn't Gamecube more powerful than both?)
PS3 more powerful than 360. 360 dominates (outside Japan).

Why we always get so hung up on what's "more powerful" is a mystery.

Believe it or not, I've seen Xbox fans storm PS4 fans on twitter for saying anything about PS4 superiority. I don't blame him one bit for staying neutral.

Xbox fans are harsh.

There are still Xbox fans? They all seemed to vanish after the 21st May. On here, at least.

I'm not making anything out of anything, just sharing info that may be of interest to some forumites here.

Or, one of Carmack's less well-received efforts in the previous generation will go on to be one of the defining moments in the start of the next generation. Doom 3 - Oculus. Go figure.
