PS4 vs Xbox One console sizes - PS4 is small

wait, is it correct? that doesn't match at all with what is in first page where both consoles width (or height in vertical stance) is pretty much the same.

I coulda swore I heard the same thing. I don't want to get my hopes up and expect a super small box.

Xbox One dimensions are an estimate from this image here:

So it might not be accurate. But looking at the size of the disc slots (Xbone and PS3), I'd say it's not far off.

PS3, Xbox 360, and PS4 are all based on official specs so they should be 100% correct. Also look at the USB ports on the PS3 and PS4. They're the same size, or very close.

Advantages the PS4 has over the Xbox One.

+ No new DRM
+ Allows used games
+ No mandatory online check in
+ No forced camera sensor
+ No external power brick
+ 65% smaller
+ Region free
+ Upgradeable hard drive
+ $100/£80 cheaper
+ 50%+ more powerful
+ GDDR5 vs DDR3 (2.6x more memory bandwidth)
+ 2GB additional ram available for games
+ Easier to develop for
+ Self publishing for Indies

Unless you literally cannot live without Microsoft exclusives, I honestly can't see why anyone would pick the Xbox One over the PS4. The PS4 is superior in nearly every way.

Yeah, looks like X1 is a mediocre rush job. Can't believe how much MS screwed up. It's like they were thinking Sony is dead in the water with all the losses.

Are you sure you haven't mixed up the height and width measurements for the PS4 in those comparison images? They seem almost unbelievable.

it's ok, you're all right now

ps4 does look smaller in the photo comparison

That's not too far off from the other guys.

It's just missing the slant.

Clever illusion. Wonder if their design guys factored something like that in. It only works vertically though, a configuration I don't think X1 will ever be in.

this can't be true. Like seriously, the measurement is out of place.

I measured the drives, and it's off by 15-30 pixels depending on where you start with X1. It's maybe not that the PS4 is too small but the X1 is too big in the comparison.

If they're roughly the same specs (yes i know about the teraflop discrepancy) and chip setup then this makes absolutely no sense to me.
Other than the fact that the MB design was done by idiots, which doesn't bode well.

Maybe MS wanted it to be a similar size and shape to cable boxes etc?

i don't know much about hardware tech but from eyes Sony should be applauded for making the thing so damn small. it's kind of mesmerizing.

A bit wary of internal power supply - anything that can add to the heat isn't good. But Sony had good cooling in the very first PS3s so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully e chips stay relatively cool when just in the dashboard/watching Netflix etc. when you're playing a game you can deal with a little extra noise from the fans.

Looks like the vertical stand is an accessory, need to remember to get that - always have mine vertically since PS2

Should stick with percentages for price and ram. It's basically 20% less expensive. So how about

PS4 is 27.5cm wide/tall vs. the Xbox One at 34.3cm (est.). Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

That's what I was wondering, whether the 275mm for the PS4 was for the width/height or the depth. You guys are right, though, it's definitely the width. What a tiny little thing :p

That's not a bad way to estimate the size, actually.

yes. that is the most gorgeous photo of the system yet. It looks... soft.

Softness probably comes from resizing it :p Just click the link and get it at that angle.

Just referring to the design features and how the design looks at that angle, not so much the material reflection or looks.

I think that's it. Closer to jiggle's approximation. People have to understand that the PS4 is slanted back though so it's an illusion. A clever one, at that.

edit: to clarify, the rightmost side of the PS4 in the vertical configuration seen here is precisely as high as the leftmost side. It's flat. It's just that the 2D head-on view doesn't convey that information properly. It's not going to lean over when you put it in that configuration!

PS4's look is growing on me. I think it looks pretty good both horizontally and vertically. It's clear that at least some thought and sensible direction was put into the console's appearance. Pretty nice that Sony got the PS4's size to be quite small. However I think the PS2 Slim is Sony's best-looking console.

Xbox One isn't ugly...it's just bland. It might just be the most generic and dull-looking console of all time. It's just a black box with several different exterior textures lazily slapped haphazardly on it. That's it. No sense of style. The X1 looks better than the original Xbox...but the OG Xbox had some style to it; it was just terrible. It's evident that Microsoft doesn't give a damn what the Xbox One looks like...as long as it's reliable and adequately cooled, that's all they care about. Which is fine; I don't blame them after the 360 RROD fiasco.

speaking of which, whatever happened to him?

He was made an honorary chairman in the 2007 Sony re-shuffle, and then removed entirely in the 2011 Sony re-shuffle.

He's the CEO of some other company now and is sitting on his $6 billion dollars.

Dat sexy engineering.

Being that it's slot loaded, is there a good chance that it will spin discs quieter than the PS3 super slim?

joshcryer

i thought xbone measured only slightly bigger than the 360 slim.

wtf is up with the ps4. is it a top loader? i see usb slots where the disc should go.

Look closely on the left side, the disk is a feeder loader, like PS3. It's in the "trough." (I personally don't like that very much but it's higher than most feeder loaders so you should be OK.)

This is exactly to scale based on these measurements.

XB1: 34.3 x 26.3 x 8

PS4: 30.5 x 27.5 x 5.3

I think that is wrong. I think you should reverse 30.5 and 27.5 because the system slants backward. It's further back than it is high. I bet if you calculated the angle of this, in fact, it would fit up perfectly with the angle of the front/back/"eraser" slant.

edit: ActionRemix's pic agrees with me, however, in the right side of his image the PS4 is facing upward and not left like the other consoles...

Man I hope Sony keep it this size and shape.

I remember the original PSP they showed at E3. It looked completly different from the released product.

The PS4 is very well designed. It looks like it will be able to last the whole generation without any need for change. I somehow get the feeling that they had an original design, and refined it as if they were creating a new model.
