Capcom's Deep Down (PS4) is an online game, TGS debut [Reading-RPG, online required]

Just saw the visuals and I have to say, it's amazing how these publishers think they can get away by lying to the world time and again.

Anyway, for visual fidelity, it's best to look to first parties.

For this game, visual downgrade is only part of the problem.

Deep Down, The Division, Titan Fall, Sunset OverDrive, Destiny, DriveClub (technically it does have SP)

There is a clear effort to get people to game online through AAA titles, but with the paywall on both consoles it's just keeping me away from jumping into next gen. Keep it up guys.

I still feel this is a direction from the big pubs to phase out $60 games and try to get subscription based games to a more mainstream audience. I guarantee you at the end of next gen you'll see them try to get you to pay $10 a month for their games. And you'll have journalist spin this too "Is $60 really fair for hundreds of hours of entertainment managed by expensive datacenters and the powerzz of the cloud?"

With the subscription model quickly becoming a thing of the past I highly doubt any publisher would try to introduce a game with that model now.

a very modern or even futuristic logo? Assassins Creed -style virtual reality confirmed!! :D
IDK, I got more of a Limbo/lost souls vibe.

And good grief at the concern-trolling about downgrades based on 2-3 seconds of quickly flashed, blurred/filtered footage. Never change, GAF.

Youtube compression doesn't do anyone any favors. This game is going to be gorgeous.

Although it IS Capcom so....yeah most likely up in the air or cancelled due to "not significant fan interest".

People need to stop believing what a game will look like until you actually see someone playing it for real. I'm not surprised at all though. Watch the same thing happen to every other "amazing" reveal of a next-gen game.

"Target render" bait and switch is still a thing? You'd think devs would learn by now, lol

The video is horribly compressed and half the areas didn't even look textured. Not sure why they released this but I highly doubt it's representative of the final product, especially given all the tech demos released in conjunction.

If nothing else Capcom pretty consistently puts out great looking games.

So I guess that reveal trailer was a bunch of lies then? This is why you don't trust target renders.

Excited for this game. I'm hoping it to be a roguelike with a better Dark Souls esque multiplayer mechanic. Albeit, more fleshed out than what Dark Souls had.

I did a few frame grabs and compared them to the reveal trailer, and yes; it looks nothing like the reveal. Oh well.

Online only game? Color me disinterested.

Can't watch the video, but I'm disappointed by some impressions of the visual fidelity so far.

You appreciate the irony in saying this, yes? People shouldn't believe anything about a game until they've seen it played but apparently you're ready to believe there's a downgrade based on this teaser with no evidence of anyone actually playing it. OK!

They should rename it into Deep Downgraded.

Nicely done.

LOL at all the people saying it looks the same. That new trailer looks like a tablet game FFS.

I pre-ordered a PS4 largely for the potential this game offered (and we all know The Last Guardian is going to be the secret pack-in game in the first PS4 shipments). That and I got the system for $250.

In any case, with the massive downgrade and the announcement of online? Dead to me.

DEAD.

I'm ready to believe it because history has shown it to be true.

PS2 version confirmed!

LOL

lol at the bad graphics comments

dark souls and dark arisen are both amongst the best action RPG's ever made IMO, and they look poor vs skyrim etc.

oh my crap what is that logo font? It's an Apple ad. What is that modern plain white font doing in a medieval dragons and magic game's logo? It's sick.

Online? Eff that. I've played 8 minutes of online gaming in the last 5 years and will not change next gen. If they make it MMORPG, no single player, poop it all to heck. And that vomitous logo had better not mean it's sci-fi with a twist.

What a gross decision. Fix it before TGS, Capcom. And get rid of the blue behind that nerd font. Deep Down should mean dark terror from Deep Down the stinking hole to Hades. This is tablet ad malarkey.

And if it really is online only, just close your doors, Cap.

It never ceases to amaze me when people compare a HD trailer to a compressed, low resolution video and then begin the doom-saying. Fucking hell guys.

Let me clarify - you're ready to believe in a downgrade so massive that it takes the game back to early PS360 era visual fidelity? Because that's what the screencaps are basically showing. You really think the issue that most accounts for that is a deliberate downgrade? Not the way the video is edited, filtered or compressed?

And? This is suppose to be the game showing off Capcom's new, next-gen engine and for their sake, I hope someone accidentally moved all the sliders on the quality scale to low before capturing the footage.

Also to those saying "out due to online" - sadly, I expected them to change things since dragons dogma did not sell well outside japan. This means instead of "lets create a better version of this single player RPG", its "well that single player RPG didnt work, we have to mix things up. hmm dark souls online feature is popular...:

and ... am just as excited to play the game.

I can see why people are disappointed about the graphics too, they do look terrible

Next gen. More and more online only games are revealed.

Always online is happening whether you like it or not. Wonder how big portion of games will require online only to play towards the end of this new generation?

People were talking about how the tech demo for this was one of the few things that really showcased a jump for the next generation of graphics.

Imagine those corridors fill up with fluidy flames then watch as they shatter into tiny pieces after a huge-ass dragon shows up to catch you.

This game will be a beauty.

That only will happen if these console online-only games actually sell in the beginning of the generation, and we have no idea if the market can sustain so many at once, especially with pay walls for both PS4 and Xbox One. If these efforts don't perform well, that future won't happen.

yeah it seems to have a logo and everything with ™:

I think the logo designer misread the memo.

The game is about going deep down the earth, not deep down the ocean.

These comments are also stupid.

"This game I knew literally nothing about cheated me for releasing more details!"

I think you giving Capcom too much leeway here. It is entirely their fault for the misleading marketing they had during their reveal. They should not be surprised that people are upset. This bullshit is way too prominent in the industry. They even tried to add a UI in their reveal video to make it look like gameplay.

presumably, the online aspect is to try to capture the dark souls success. unlike dragons dogma, dark souls ended up selling well outside japan, so its only natural they would want to mix things up beyond what the original game was (didnt sell well sadly in america/europe)

this could also tie in to the horror looking enemies, they may be making a tougher game, again to appeal to dark souls players (bit like how BBI was made way tougher than regular game for dark arisen)

Well I did love Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. As long as the gameplay is legit, if it's like that but with human players instead of pawns, I think it could be awesome. If it's more like an MMO or something, will be disappointed, unless there is instanced dungeons and of the same quality as Dark Arisen.

If they do it like Dark Souls, all the better. Just use the stones you normally used for Pawns, to find players online. Would be best way to do it IMO.

Trailer looks far off the initial render though, I know it's still early, and I'm okay as long as the gameplay is legit, but it doesn't look next-gen at all so far. I will give them the benefit of the doubt to use TGS as a grander reveal though.

The purpose of a teaser is to build excitement. Judging by a lot of comments in this thread it hasn't succeeded.

What misleading marketing? Literally all we knew was "it's a PS4 game." Now we know more and some people aren't happy. Just because they aren't happy does not mean you should have to justify it with accusations of misleading consumers.

Do you remember their reveal showing?
