Games for Windows Live shutting down July 1, 2014.

For some games, yes. If developers don't patch their games, everyone will just turn to cracks in order to get their games working.

Hmm ok thanks. The only games I have I also have on 360, but I like the PC versions better. GTA IV, Fable III, Dark Souls PTD, Fallout III, Arkham City.

Well except Halo 2, but I finished that years ago. Other than achievements I guess I'm ok with this. I would assume achievements tied to your Xbox Gamer Tag would be discontinued after this time as well then, right?

No, probably not.

It's always a possibility, mind, even with Nintendo they might suddenly be forced to stick with only Hanafuda cards, but as Koch Media's not related to other Koch companies and has had long term investment in gaming I don't see why they're likely to treat this as an experimental foray to ultimately back out of after a few years.

Are people really still mixing up Koch Media with Koch Industries? SMH.

For the record, I was able to install and completely finish my copy of the Batman games without signing up for GfWL. I simply skipped that screen when ever I loaded them up on Steam. Unfortunately, I was locked out of DLC purchases but they still worked flawlessly otherwise.

Came late to the thread. Questions:

Does it mean that my Dark Souls PC or Arkham City-game will never work after 7/14/2014?

Funny, I would call it airing of legitimate concerns. It'll be interesting to see how many games are patched and how many lost in the end. Officially, I mean. The community will crack them all, I expect.

Aren't they already cracked? Is there any game released until today that hasn't been cracked?

If you crack GFWL out of them, not, they'll be playable (outside of the online portions/features of said games, of course).

That's the case with Dark Souls. Of course... that'll happen on PS3 too, when they shut down the servers.

If you follow my later posts, I argued that Microsoft would probably release a patch to remove that server-side authentication.
They could host it on the Microsoft website like they do with GFWL updates now.

Keep in mind, this isn't just Microsoft at play here. These are major publishers with releases spanning back the better part of a decade. And you are playing with a person's property rights.
Something will get done.

Now to go in offline mode and play Spelunky.
I was one of the people that Steam offline mode pretty much always worked for...until earlier this year, when my internet detected late or something, and Steam refused to use my saved login credentials to start offline mode. I tried like 30 different things as a detailed experiment (disconnecting network cable, the usual stuff that works), and posted the results on GAF, and was never able to get it working. Amusingly enough, I pulled up a backup USB drive with my Steam installation from like 2-3 years ago on it, and THAT installation and its games worked. But modern Steam, nope.

So, even with Steam, which I like, DRM sucks when something doesn't work nicely.

As for GFWL, yes, bury this one deep. I do feel a strange end-of-an-era sadness, mostly for the games which may vanish. I have fond memories of FUEL on Steam. I think there is a GFWL-removal fan patch for that though.

And Fallout 3, yikes, that's a big game and I only made it partway in. Odds of me finishing that by next year are low.

Steam still has huge issues with shutting down incorrectly. Some of the files get corrupt and you need to go online to repopulate those files.

If you are really worried about it, then check it out online and find which specific ones to backup in case of emergency.

That is why your 3 year old installation worked, those files were not corrupted.

So if I have the GFWL only version, does it mean it will be DRM free or it will now turn to Steam version?

You are probably going to get screwed.

You bought games through GFWL Marketplace?

I saw mention of such files, and I think I backed them up after I went online again. So if it happens again I can continue the experiment by restoring those files at least. :p

It should activate on Steam

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm not too versed in Dark Souls retail.
I have it retail, just type the gfwl key into Steam

They really should have done this years ago -_- But it's good news regardless.

And hey, now all of those issues of GFW Magazine will surely become collector's items :D

So Dark Souls network features are dead?

Not until July 1st next year. And only if From doesn't go back and rework it.

Guess this also means Lost Planet Colonies edition also isn't going to be cross-platform play in a year. :(

Isn't this what people were worried about with the Xbox One having everything digital? Glad Microsoft changed their stance because this news definitely would have hurt them much much more.

This is pretty crazy.

Apparently there are games that will still come out for it and two came out in 2013! (The games with "Live" will get screwed the most).
There is a difference between Games for Windows and Game for Windows LIVE.

Games for Windows it's some kind of "certification", that that specific game will work under Windows, and will support things like the XBox 360 controller. Games like Alien vs Predator 2011, Just Cause 2, Dishonored, Fallout New Vegas have this "certification", but all of them are Steamworks, and you don't need to activate the key on the DRM.

Games for Windows LIVE it's the full DRM. With key activation and everything.

Capcom and Namco better patch all their games to not use GFWL. Though I'm pretty sure MS will be throwing something up that enables these games to be played still. Though obviously multiplayer support won't be there.....which means yet again ill be playing dark souls solo offline.

Is LP even active? been thinking about picking it up

It was years ago. Played on the 360 side, left because PC hackers were starting to pick up on it. Dunno if the Japanese playerbase is still active for Colonies and with the shutdown it won't really matter in a year.

As for Extreme Condition/non-Colonies: Dunno on that front. Dunno how popular it was on PC in Japan or the West.

You will be able to upgrade Street Fighter IV to the Ultra version which will not use GFWL multiplayer.

Oh shit. No one's gonna patch Red Faction.

I guess we could always play offline right? Yeah, we miss out on that sweet multiplayer, but if we wanted to play single, it would still launch GFWL, just not connect...?

Someone help me out because i really want to go back and play RFG in the future again.

Lots of games have the Game For Windows label. This is not what we're worried about, as a lot of them are Steamworks games (like everything Bethesda has published in the past couple of years).

We are worried about games with the Games For Windows Live label. These games requires the GFWL for multiplayer and, in many cases, single-player.

Maybe the publishers that bought their IPs will look into it.

The new publisher is Nordic Games, who I've heard buy IPs only to sit on them. I'm skeptical that they'd patch Guerilla.

You're forgetting Lost Planet: Colonies Edition for online AND the achievements. There's online achievements (reaching level 100 which is GOOD FUCKING LUCK at this point unless you manipulate files/hack it) with it as well.
