Jack Tretton: "[PS4] Production yields have been fantastic"

so no one else noticed that the chart says said Wii instead of Wii U?

with Microsoft's bad DRM/used "messaging" to the actual name of Nintendo's console, there's something to be be said for clarity in the gaming market.

Well, first sometimes things due not end up as everyone believes, more so that consoles fates do not rely on us, the enthusiasts, which buy a lot of games, but on the casual gamers. I believe the market is changing, I am no analyst and I don´t have any studies to back this up. I hope the low sales we are seeing are because of Next gen systems coming, but I also believe the console space has more competition now than ever before. Decent gaming PCs are way cheaper than before, and with AMDs APUs this trend will continue to drop. The PC game market is cheaper, just like the other competitor to consoles, tablets and phones. I don´t see casuals dropping 60 on games like before, maybe just Madden, Fifa and/or CoD.

I would have agreed partially if you said tablet, mobile, or mini console (PSVTV) were going to pave the roads to the future. But PC gaming... no. Simply no. Expecting any person casual person to put together a gaming rig close to the price of a PS4 from nothing is NOT going to happen. No matter that happens with APUs and stuff. No matter how cheap the games are. Will PC gaming see a rise? Yes. I absolutely think so. But consoles are where the casual audience will go.

The chart as shown is for the three home consoles, broken down in percentages and not units sold. It has nothing to do with competition outside of those 3 machines or whether they sell 100 units or 100 million. The only market changes that would affect that chart is if something happened that made one or two of those companies gain more of those total sales.

Jack one of the guys who doesn't stutter or say "Umm" when answering questions, I envy him on his eloquent and smoothness :) .

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Gotta love how the majority of posters are pointing out the Wii U is missing the U in the graph yet completely ignoring the lack of One from Xbox

It really is exciting to think (with a precedent already set!) that if the PS4s cooling proves effective enough, Sony could upclock a few years down the line and give late gen games a boost even above advances in hUMA familiarity.

Happened with the PSP so yes.

PSP was originally down clocked. It could always handle the upclock.

But still "yes" for PS4, IF they leave some room. If it's tightly designed to the limits then no upclock would be possible without possibly damaging the system.

His answers make sense. It explains why they stopped the unlimited pre-orders. They know they can probably sell their full stock in the first week. Probably want to have big shipments every week. It's fucking bizarre how much they changed since PS3. Kaz <3

Could clock speeds be raised with a software update in the future? Or is that crazy talk, because I have no idea.
Of course they can just like you can overclock your PC GPU with simple settings

AFAIK, PSP was initially down-clocked for battery life. They only up-clocked when the higher capacity battery became available.

800MHz is pretty much a downclock for the desktop GCN GPUs you can buy them clocked at 1000MHz

I thought that was a hardware, not a software update

you think SONY would release some new PSP games that only work on the newer PSPs? lol

it was for all the PSP's.

CPU 1-333 MHz (set at 222 MHz by default)

GPU 1-166 MHz (set at 111 MHz by default)

Sorry if the wording made it sound like casuals were going to ride the PC. What I meant was that there is more competition, casuals onto tablets/phones and some enthusiasts going for PC/steambox instead of consoles.

Yes you are right with the graph, basically I started saying nothing is set in stone regarding the graph. Then I discussed that the market is changing. A lot of things going on faster than we think, digital goods climbing, PC is growing and the table/phone, which there is a lot of talk about but nothing concrete to prove yet.

I am just hoping that there is not another crash, that would suck big time. Anyway I am way off topic.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
How long does it usually take for someone to get their hands on a new console and rip it down to it's processors ?

It was software. The hacked PSP's from day 1 have been able to unlock 333mhz while the others were dropped to something like 222mhz to conserve batteries.

But also the newer models had twice the RAM at 64MB. That said, for a console that's plugged in it makes zero sense not to unlock the full speed day one.

Would overclocking the console cause some of them to automatically fail, or not?

I'd really love for them to overclock it...

I wonder how realistic it would be to go from 800 -> 900 or 1000.

If stock desktop GPUs are clocked at 1000, why is this so severely underclocked?

I think we'll know how viable it is when it's released. If the fans run at an acceptable noise level there could be room to spare in the future for an upclock along with a fan speed increase to compensate.

You would have heard what?

I said test their luck & up clock it since it's having good yields what would you have heard?

they can do this with a Firmware Update if they ever release a game that need it.

1.84TFLOPS has been their target since the 1st leak so it's not like they pushed the final product & seen that 800MHz was the limit before it started over heating or anything.

but seeing that they are the Top Dog right now & their isn't much of a reason to up the clock I don't think it's going to happen.

They could do. I think they would had announced upclocking by now. No sense in keeping that under wraps, since its positive news.

Downclocks/upclocks tend to come at the last minute.

May have played it conservatively until the console gets manufactured to see what impact it would have on yields and production.

Who knows, the Xbox One upclocks came awfully late.

I didn't say that they have up clocked the GPU I said they should try their luck & clock it to 900MHz.

there isn't anything for them to be keeping under wraps, I was just saying that since their yields are so good with the GPU clocked at 800MHz that they should try their luck with 900MHz.

Push It To The Limit!

Personally I think a cpu upclock is more likely at this point

They may have said 1.6 before but I'm not entirely convinced it will stay that way
