I think it was up to the developer if they wanted to allow custom soundtracks in their game? Wasn't it?

Well some games allowed it like SSX and both NFS games. Its one of the best features on xbox 360 and its unfathomable its not standard on PS4.

Vita does this as well. Not sure if that's a system wide feature but I recall playing stuff in the music app and it muting the normal game music.

Wait, I'm pretty sure you could do this in the last couple of motorstorm games. music must be on the ps3, start game, press PS button, goto music, scroll up to music player, choose music, press PS button again, resume racing awesomeness.

right?

Yes, because Red Dead Redemption allowed it. I put together a nice Morricone playlist.

I don't have anything against Music unlimited, my music collection blows so I use it along with their music videos app, but I mainly bought the Ps3 as a blueray player, since it was reportedly a really good one, think it was when the slim came out.

Been looking forward to replacing it with new hardware, slightly disappointed now..

It's based on a faulty assumption that Apples old method of tightly integrating hardware and software also applies to software/services and data. Companies think the best way to make money is force you to spend it instead of making you want to spend it.

Just a couple weeks ago I was putting together a playlist for Driveclub, then Driveclub gets delayed, then the system can't play mp3s anyway. Most lame.

I still use PS3 Media Server frequently so the DLNA situation is a bummer as well. Hopefully they can add this back in soon.

It's not about playing music when I play, it is about custom sound tracks i.e. MLB the Show batter walk up music, or NBA 2K importing authentic arena music ect.. Also for games like wipeout and Gran Turismo is great for your own custom music playing while you race. As for using it just for listening to music nope I don't do that at all.

If you have the music program audacity, you can make some nice snippets of music and chants for import into the game to fit those various spots.

I think custom soundtrack support might have been the very first thing I asked about regarding the next gen consoles in what seems like forever ago. I just wanted to put that to rest early on.
