Rakugo isn't stand-up, because they don't stand up! xp

I've heard it described more than once as "sit-down comedy."

I also watched a couple of English rakugo performances back when Joshiraku was airing, and realized that a large percentage of the first episode of Polar Bear Cafe was based on a classic rakugo story.

Does legit stand-up have ANY kind of presence in Japan? Rakugo seems way too subdued and limited in how the jokes are told to really be an equivalent.

Manzai is the Japanese equivalent of stand up but its by two people. Its quite a bit more mainstream than stand up is in the US.

Some of the most powerful and influential acts in Japanese entertainment are manzai acts. Pretty much all variety shows are hosted and guested in by manzai acts. In absolute terms, more people around the world know American standup (because of population) but in relative terms, manzai is pretty much half the entire business in Japan.

There's really nothing that can be done by 1 dude that can't be done with 2 dudes. There are prop comedians, impressionists and stuff doing manzai too. There are solo acts but its not as common as duos. Japanese comedy relies on a back and forth between the "boke" and the "tsukkomi" and alot of the comedy relies on the boke horsing around and the tsukkomi interjecting.

Samurai Flamenco has some comedy elements, but it's not really over-the-top. Not really keeping up with much else tbh.

Pretty silly an a bit slow paced but a good start to this cooking fest. Havent laughed this much in awhile and the current theme song is perfect in the instrumental form...but to use it three episodes in a row is a bit much...loses its significance and specialness if their going to keep using it like that.

There's not really much in the way of comedy at the moment, but there have been some great comedy series from the past few years.

Darn, all I watch are action comedy's but almost none of them are on CR

If you ever get the chance you should check out:
Magi (this actually is on CR) Great action, and lot's of comedy. Story is decent.
Hunter X Hunter 2011 (if you don't mind watching 100ep, it's also on CR) Feels like a regular shounen show, and is animated well for a long running show
Ben-To (not on CR, but is the best action comedy I've ever seen) Best recommendation I can give, just... wow at this show.
Samurai Champloo (this is on Hulu) I just watched this currently, it's really good. Action is amazing, and the comedy is pretty good as well.
Hajime No Ippo Rising (It's on CR) This is mostly action, but has a little comedy thrown in every once in a while. It's boxing so it's mostly cool punches being thrown.

These are some of my favorite's that I've seen. 2 that are on CR, and 2 that isn't.

The boke and tsukkomi routine strikes me as something limiting, which is what I thought all manzai was. How do solo acts work?

Keep in mind I'm not saying whether one is better or worse than the other, just that there's limits to a routine that requires a straight man and a funny man just like there are limits to a routine that only has one person.

As far as action, Hunter x Hunter is fantastic, and really the last shounen action series you ever need to watch.

Crunchyroll really seems to be lacking in the comedy department. It has some good stuff, but there are several series I'd recommend that they don't have. Two of my favorite comedy series ever aren't even licensed (Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei and Joshiraku), and Daily Lives of High School Boys isn't streaming anywhere, despite being licensed and having a Blu-ray release.

Ben-To was great, but it's also not even licensed. It didn't even sell well in Japan, unfortunately.

Better to just watch what it's a ripoff of. Gintama is most definitely on Crunchyroll.

The funny thing is that the original director for Gintama actually directed Nichibros.

And the second director for Gintama directed Binbougami.

They're both kind of Gintama ripoffs (even though they're all by Sunrise), but I like that sort of humor.
