Checking here, Dragon Quest Monsters iOS is still #2 in Japan despite shuffling among the other spots: http://www.apptiled.com/index.php/iphone-ipad/app-store/iphone-top-grossing-apps

Yeah, my faith in PS4 continues to be low.

Vita revival month now looks like this:
Is this a re-release of PSO2?

Pretty cool that Youkai Watch is #1, which show the series really has potential (especially with the anime that started a few weeks ago). Still, it's pretty sad the best selling IPs didn't even reach 500k, hopefully 2014 will be better.
Some of those are a bit better when SKU combined, but yeah, launching new IP these days isn't easy.

At least for the top 30, the amazing download ratio for Vita people were talking about doesn't seem to exist in Japan as of now.
I think the digital numbers Sony tout for the Vita include PSN-only titles, which would make sense due to many titles being available for the PSV only on PSN and how happy indie devs are with sales of their games on the Vita.

Yeah, if that wasn't overwhelmingly referring to the West and including digital only games I'd be shocked.

Judging by comparing NPD and some shipment counts, I suspect certain retail games did pretty well digitally as well like Persona, but I think a lot of people viewed that as a $20 downloadable game in the West in the context of the system. That or Europe has had an extremely tremendous performance for the game at retail which seems implausible.

Yeah, but isn't that also free, or is it something you have to buy out of the cash shop in game?

Its free but they're selling it on a card as a Deluxe package bundled with some item codes for stuff you can only get by buying it, weapons, outfits, crafting boosters etc

70K is very high. Most niche titles' LTD won't reach such numbers. I'd say TOP 30 is still not enough to give us the full picture of digital sales.

But we know thanks the top 10 that the digital sales for the titles outside the top 30 are not higher than 8.792.

Yeah, no need to remind me... or Capcom for that matter. Can't believe how bad Gaist Crusher cratered, would love to know what went wrong exactly. I would love to hear what Capcom has got to say about that, when is their financial meeting?

It's the Treasure Curse.

Capcom really hasn't had a huge kids IP since MMBN/SF. SE also bombed recently with Gyrozetter. Level 5 has sort of cornered the market outside Bandai and Nintendo.

I've bought all the deluxe/special packages thus far, if anything for the costume codes.
I don't think I've run into a single other player with the Karen Erra Replica outfit :3

February 7th. It's a new Japanese IP though, so if it's anything like last time they'll call it an enormous success of unprecedented status.

Pretty good sales for Toukiden, being a new IP and all. But I thought it had already passed the 400,000 mark with both versions combined. Nice results for Dragon's Crown too, I need to buy the game sometime.

As other people say, the game that has the best room for improvement is Youkai Watch. It looks like the next Inazuma Eleven. Hope we see a Witch and the Hundred Knights PSVita port. I want a isometric JRPG on that thing :(

Does those Soul Sacrifice sales include the double packs?

Ah, that'd literally be THE spin of the century. What surprised me is that it had everything to suceeed :

- released on popular console
- console corresponds to the right demographic
- lots of stuff kids like
- anime

But my guess is they launch at a terrible time : very busy period, with lots of games targetting the same demographics, and from the already established franchises (and, needless to say, much more popular like Pokémon). There's also Monster Hunter apparently attracting even younger players this time around.

So yeah, looking forward to Feb 7th then, should be interesting.

Oh yeah, forgot about Gyrozetter. Kids market is much more ruthless than they thought... I mean, even Level-5 isn't doing so hot nowadays (that's what you get for milking your franchises like hell, though).

That it has good chances coming close to PS3 sw and hw sales.

Yeah i think that's the most logical conclusion we could come to at this point. I feel like everything in gaming is cyclical though and that by mid-gen Japan will be back in a big way on consoles and console software.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

Demographic decline, dislike of immigration, economic stagnation, and increasing wealth concentration in the geriatric demographic say no.

There's no reason to expect this at all. Dedicated consoles are going to be on a decline this gen compared to last gen as mobile gaming is growing.

I still don't get why people are expecting PS4 to reverse the trend of last gen.
Yes, PS3 was hurt by the price, but I think it had a pretty good time going into the start of last gen. Wii wasn't expected to do too well in the casual space, and DS/PSP weren't even really competing for the same type of audience at the time (Dragon Quest IX was announced after PS3 came out, and Monster Hunter wouldn't bring the home console audience to PSP until a couple years later).

This time, PS4 is starting out of the gate competing with 3DS, Vita, and Mobile. PS3 for its first year too.

It's entirely possible, but I don't get what people are basing it on.

So its starting at a cheaper price point and with less competition?

I think the PS4 will be fine but it'd help if Sony actually developed some marquee games that sold well in Japan for a change.

I don't think DS/Wii/PSP at the time (prior to PS3's launch) were really considered competition, since again, they weren't getting the same kind of announcements that PS3 was getting.
So it's definitely going in with more competition than what people expected for PS3.

Fair enough. But you're also forgetting how hard Microsoft went for Japan early on last gen. There were a lot of 360 exclusives to start the gen. Won't be the case with the XB1.

As far as I can tell the 3DS is the only competition the PS4 will have in Japan. And that's a handheld.

The price is lower, the architecture is accessible, Sony is more dev friendly than ever and not an asshole, Japan can now handle hd development and seems to be mostly ready for the next gen, FF is not going to take a hundred years before it's ready and it's probably not going to be shit.

To be fair, it IS dead outside of Japan and indies. The big western 3rd parties don't care anymore.

Only thing they can do in the west is releasing the Vita-2000 with a very drastic price-drop and market it heavily as a PS4 companion device. Maybe rebrand it as PSP4 or something. But even then, it won't be half as successful as the PSP.

That being said, I love my Vita, but I've just accepted it as what it is.

And yet Aksys, NIS, and Atlus are localizing all kind of quirky stuff for the Vita. Maybe even more than for the 3DS. I think the Vita is doing a lot better than people realize.

To me it seems like the PS4 is probably going be similar to the PS3 from a SW perspective.

I don't see how its price will be enough to make the situation change from the overall scope of the last gen. When PS3 was priced similarly, it still wasn't really competitive with DS/PSP, and this was before Final Fantasy XIII came out too.
I don't think being more development friendly will really affect the titles much either. It will definitely get a similar lineup to PS3 when all is said and done, but I don't see why publishers would want to move away from handhelds/mobile when the big genres of today (things like hunting games and the mobile success stories) cannot be replicated on consoles.
Final Fantasy isn't the powerhouse it once was, at the moment. But Final Fantasy was still a huge positive name prior to Final Fantasy XIII's release.

I'm not saying that PS4 can't do better, but I don't see why some are expecting it to completely reverse the trend based on what we know so far. If things do change, it's not gonna be because of Final Fantasy or anything, but something else entirely.

PS4 is going to probably fall to Wii U number a few months after launch and stay there until bigger software comes out. As of launch, there is no reason to own one besides hype, and I highly doubt that plays as much of a role as it did in the west in a country like Japan. We've seen the PS3, Wii U, Vita, 3DS all have slow starts to abysmal starts so hype doesn't really seem to work for systems.

Hype works in Japan (see the iconic 3DS Fall Conference), but Sony would need more than the usual MGS and FF titles.

I doubt it will ever track behind the PS3, this time Sony has no competition.

I don't get this thinking either.
How are 3DS, Vita, and mobile not in competition?

In Japan, they are very much competing for the same audience, with the same types of titles.

PS4 has actual 3rd party support and won't suffer months without any title released and without anything on the horizon worth waiting for.

It all depends on how quickly third parties jump from PS3 to PS4, which year FFXV gets released and how Sony manages the price drops

All this talk about PS3 having less competition is silly, in my opinion. For example, it took ~3 years for PS3 to get Tales and FF. This time, there's no Wii phenomenom, there is no massive moneyhatting from Microsoft (at least for now) and Vita and 3DS are no PSP and DS.

If I were a big third party console developer (Capcom, Konami, S-E, Namco Bandai, Tecmo Koei) and wanted to keep making business as usual, there's nowhere I could go but PS4. I mean, there's nothing indicating that typical PS3 games won't eventually go to PS4. And the sooner they go there, the healthier PS4 and third parties will be.
