Original Gameboy, what are some good games?

Recently picked up an old gameboy like I used to have when I was a kid.

Besides, Zelda, Mario, and Megaman, (and of course Tetris) what are some good games to get for it?

Edit damn wrong forum, can a mod move it please? Sorry.

Lots of good puzzle games. I really like Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, so I’d recommend that. For action games, TMNT, Contra and Ninja Gaiden are very solid. The Castlevania games are great but brutally difficult and unforgiving.

My favorite (non-Nintendo) ones were:
Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge (I never liked Adventure)
Operation C
Sword of Hope 1 & 2
Fortified Zone
Megami Tensei: Revelations (GBC but compatible)
Rolan's Curse 1 & 2

The Donkey Kong Land series (2 and 3 mostly), Pokémon obviously, Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch (Looney Tunes: Carrot Crazy in US) is good fun, those are some of my personal favourites. Link's Awakening seems great but I never had that.

The mother fu**er of all Game Boy games.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Final Fantasy Adventure, Legend, and Legend 2

Not Legend 3? It was my favorite game in the series and would get my recommendation over the other two personally.

Definitely Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land.

It's the definitive Wario-game and an outstanding platformer - because it isn't just a platformer. Finishing the game once is only half of it. There's a whole 2nd layer to the game once you search for the secret treasures. Really tough at times, but super rewarding, as you get to witness the ever improving prize houses Wario gets for more money/treasures.

Unfortunately, all sequels ditched this principle and went for gimmicky, shallow transformations.

Surprised to see nobody mentioning Link's Awakening.

Maybe some people read the OP.

Pokemon, Link's Awakening, Balloon Kid, Batman: Return of the Joker, TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan, Kirby's Dream Land, and of course Tetris are my favorites...

I know Tetris has been mentioned a bunch, but I still get so much enjoyment from the OG Gameboy version (as opposed to the colored or reskinned ones). I'd actually like to go dig through a bunch of old Gameboy carts, maybe I'll report back here later with some lesser known games. On that note the old GB version of Qix is surprisingly difficult to put down.

I absolutely hated Legend 3, sorry. It played nothing like the previous two games in the series (in fact it probably wasn't even a part of the series was it? Legend 1 and 2 were actually SaGa 1 and 2. Legend 3 was some completely brand new game by a different team)

Dexterity, Alleyway, RType, Gargoyle's Quest, Kirby Dream Land, Tetris, Yoshi's Cookie, Pokemon, Metroid 2, Balloon Kid, Bomberman GB, Ducktales, Kirbys Pinball Land, Tecmo Bowl, TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan

A few of my favorites are Shin Chan 4, Kid Dracula, Mercenary Force, and Chalvo 55

I ordered the majority of these games from Japan. Mercenary Force can be found for cheap.

Kid Dracula and Chalvo 55 are great on Super GameBoy. I own one for my Super Famicom

If you like jrpgs, Lufia the Legend Returns has some pretty cool systems on top of a good setting+story+cast.
For tactics games, I really like Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis.

  • Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins are both great fun.
  • Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are classics and started a multimedia empire.
  • Tetris is... well its Tetris. Still my favorite version of the game for its pure simplicity.

I loved Double Dragon I & II, when I was a kid.
I think many will say that the Terminator 2 game was not good, but I had a lot of fun with that too.

Resembles a bit of the first Metal Gear but is level based rather than an "open world" thing.
The adventure elements are very light compared to Metal Gear but you still have to explore the small open levels screen by screen, collect items and weapons and make a bit of backtracking every once in a while and go through branching paths.
It's one of the best games on Game Boy.

A nice puzzle game where you eventually have to move two characters to solve the levels (that's the point I lost a little interest though).
You try to build your path to the "enemies" so that you can kick them out of the levels.

Donkey Kong

First you go through the original Donkey Kong levels and then the game opens up and gives you a brand new puzzle platformer experience with tons of levels.
It might be one of my top3 Game Boy games. Might even be the best. It's perhaps the best "remake" ever made since it has the original there but that's pretty much maybe 2% of what the game has to offer. Don't overlook the game by thinking it's just the same as the old Donkey Kong because it's completely different.

Sword of Hope II

It's a mixture of Shadowgate type of games and Dungeon Master / Bard's Tale type of RPGs.
Really good and tough as hell.

Most of the best games have already been mentioned, but you might also want to check out Survival Kids and Mole Mania. The latter is arguably Shigeru Miyamoto’s most underrated game.

The immortality premise wore a little thin though. No risk.

Final fantasy adventure is probably the best 2d Zelda clone out there, and it even did some things (the hook shot) before Zelda did. It also has a really good story, best in the ff series at the time (the Japanese version has ff gaiden in the title and it came not very long before ff4). Kenji Ito also provides an amazing score with maybe the best music on the GB.

I really like Mario's Picross. Mario's Picross 2 is also really good but only got released in Japan. There's a fan translation out there if you need one though.
