The guy I initially replied to said "3 years after release?" and I replied "lots of games get expansions 3 years after release" because they do, this isn't uncommon. The other guy jumped in and asked me to arbitrarily name 5 single-player games that got their first expansion 3 years after release which is just moving goalposts, not even relevant to the discussion. Reading comprehension helps in these situations.

Ok, so pretty much all of those are 10+ years old (with the exception of Cities Skylines, Sims 4 and Civ VI) which goes to show that its not that common.
Most of these games had their first expansion released less than 2 years after the original release (both Half Life games, Age of Empires, The Sims and etc.)
So with that said, I think its safe to say that there arent many games this decade taking 3 years to release its first expansion on the market

It was planned before the botched release of the main game wiped half of their stock value. So instead of expansion we got all hands on deck to fix the main game.

Most games these days that aren't games as a service don't even have expansions any more, so I'm not sure I understand the relevance of all this.

You didn't consider the month the expansion would be coming out either as they never confirmed that and it could come out in Dec for all we know, so technically three years could still apply. Hope you're not an engineer? - An actual engineer.

Every AC games has expansions, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-man, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Doom Eternal, Horizon, Control, Metro Exodus ... And I could go on and on
The relevance is that releasing an expansion 3 years later is a dumb business decision that no other game company is doing today. For a reason.
3 years later no one will care about your game anymore. There are ~ 12.000 people playing Cyberpunk on Steam this month. 6.000 less than The Witcher 3 right now, a 2015 game.

I really liked CP77 and was looking for a reason to jump back into it. I'd love a new game+. It's a pretty great game, if a bit underwhelming, but Night City itself is fantastic and it's a worthwhile time.

The more this game gets patched to attempt to be a working game and that DLC gets pushed back, I'll continue to stand by my comment that Ubisoft would have made the better game, functional and all, in a fraction of the time. I don't know if I can say I liked much with CP2077, the only thing done well is the map design and even that feels like it was wasted on this fucking shit as you don't do much with this world, despite who well made it actually is.
Might as well load up a tech demo of those Unreal Engine levels made by college students that have little functionality. I'm not saying this to hurt the feelings of those who like the game, but we've seen too many fucking games that actually have worlds to interact with, with logical functionality to pretend as if that was too much to ask for or the hardware was too weak to do 20 year old concepts or something. CP2077 made me realize just how hard it might be to really pull all that shit off and I now look at those other open world games in a different light.
Maybe we take for granted those features we just expect in open world games and it takes a game lacking a shit load of those features for us to realize that levels exist to making proper design.
I wouldn't be shocked that WatchDogs 4 is announced by the time this DLC is getting delayed yet again in 2023. Maybe don't force 500 people to do the job of 1500 folks...
