Laufey Director: Phranque (the cube) was the first character created by Cory Barlog for the foundation of the game; enables "super cool" mechanics

Or is it just one of Adam's balls in my throat?

God of War Laufey's reveal at the recent June 2026 State of Play certainly pleased many franchise fans, but that's not to say there weren't criticisms to be found online. For example, some wrinkled their noses at Phranque, a talking cosmic jelly cube companion played by actor Jack Quaid, largely known for his role of Hughie in the TV series The Boys (but also already present in God of War: Sons of Sparta as Eis). Phranque, like the sword's talking ribbon, Rue, was criticized for looking whimsical and therefore not grounded enough for some tastes.

The topic was tangentially touched upon by Game Director Ariel Lawrence in a recent interview with YouTuber FlowGames (spotted by ResetEra's Angie). Lawrence, who worked on the original God of War games before leaving for a stint at Riot Games, returned in July 2021 and found that Phranque (alongside Faye, of course) was the first character established by Head of Creative Cory Barlog when laying the foundation for God of War Laufey. She also said that Phranque's cubic nature has enabled the team to implement "super cool" mechanics for combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving.

Both Phranque and Rue are really important, both in combat assists as supplemental to Fay, but also in traversal and puzzle solving, and just the utility of both of them and what they can do in the shapes that they're in. So, for Phranque, as a cosmic jelly cube, how we may use him in certain parts of the world has definitely been exciting for the team just in terms of design work for us.

When I came back to the team, the two characters that actually were started from with Corey [Barlog] were both Faye and Phranque. Phranque was one of the very first things he's always been a part of this story in the Everywhen. And I think just that possibility of taking something that feels kind of inanimate and not a person, and really seeing how we could drive connection and story and make you feel about a cube. I think that was just an interesting challenge and pitch, and Cory and I were talking about it. I was like, "That's really exciting. That's something different." And I think that at the heart of it, too, it's just the surprise factor of it that was just so exciting for the team. And where we could go with that mechanically has also been super cool.

Indeed, I can already picture plenty of interesting applications. It would be even better if we could direct the cube ourselves, though that might not be the case. Anyway, talking objects aren't exactly news to the fantasy genre; as always, to judge a character's depth and value, we'll have to play the game ourselves. God of War Laufey doesn't have an official release window yet, but it is expected to launch next year on PlayStation 5, blending the brutal combat of the Norse era with the fluidity of the Greek era.

make you feel about a cube.

My feelings about a cube:

Totally not the popular opinion on this forum but I think the possible shape shifting and traversal and puzzle options sound very interesting.

Further proof that Cory set all this in motion and the ground work.

People thinking she made these odd ball choices can't cope with the reality.

I'm sure the game will be a fine by the numbers action game but a severe departure from Gow 1-3 and 2018.

Valves companion cube worked because the writing was good. A fucking rock spider moved people to tears because Hail Marys writing was good.
Even though the video was quite long, it did not show much that really looked like great writing. Felt like mimicking Marvel, which feels wrong for gow.
But we'll see. To soon to actually judge it.

If this wasn't supposed to be connected to gow I possibly would love the idea of this, if it was a proper puzzle game. Talos principle with deformable cube mechanics or whatever. But that's hardly the case.

Oh yeah, puzzle solving. The achiles heel of Sony in general.
Also I don't think super cool abilities will make this cube any less stupid.

People on this forum will keep blaming this game ad infinitum. Then, when it comes out and tops the Circana charts for multiple months, they'll all shut the fuck up and completely disappear.

And man, it'll be fucking hilarious to watch (again) people realize that most people don't even know what "woke" means.

"By the numbers". Sony Santa Monica has created some of the best action games of all time. No other action games play similar to the GOW franchise. The one thing SSM doesn't do is "by the numbers action"

Yet somehow I'm betting the cube will be some overly talkative moron players want to shut up, and the "amazing" mechanics at their core will be some jello bouncy physics or shapeshifting bullshit.

Thomas Was Alone already surmounted the narrative challenge of making you feel for a cube over a decade ago...so this isn't exciting, different, and likely to be less effective even if the other characters are good.

No, its more like they are trying to insert that cory was working on this game and it is his genesis, since some folks can not handle it being about a woman and directed by a women.
Dude you can't shoe-horn sexism in every defense of this crap. We are talking about the retarded cube, not the ugly woman.
The idea is dumb and was executed poorly, regardless of which moron came up with it.

Wonder Twin powers, activate!

Have fun with the gelatinous cube morphing into ledges, acting as stepping stones on water, and changing into a giant safety net after she jumps out of a tower.

lol

I don't expect this to be the best game in the franchise, in the top 5 action games ever, not one of the best games of this gen, and so on.

It'll be a good game with powerful visuals.

Totally fine with being proven wrong if enough Cory Magic got into it. God of war 2 and 2018 were amazing. Ragnarok was doo doo.

So it'll be if this goes down the roads of 2 and 2018, or will this be dumb like Ragnarok. I understand the masses loved Ragnarok but it's the only game in the franchise I haven't replayed.

I'd much rather be wrong and it end up being the best game they've made or in the top 2, but my radar isn't going off for that.

Just loving how they know people hate that shit and defend it with "bu bu but it was Cory's idea". Yeah, and it still sucks. Cory isn't infallible and this crap doesn't belong in GOW.

imma say fkn bullshit.

They just didn't know what to replace the boy with. They were like fuck it lets make a useless cube that will do the same thing. out of place most useless crap ever seen in a game. zero creativity. expected from the guy who ruined God of War anyway. both Ps4/5 games are garbage compared to the previous titles. GOW 1 to 3 stomps over them.

Who was behind GOW3 ? Someone hire that guy back.

The idea was obviously received poorly, why do you think she is defending it / blaming Cory?
Also you think I would pay money to suffer more of this trash? The trailer was long enough.

I think she is giving context. You buying the game or not is of no consequence to me, so frankly I just don't care.

I guess you care more about the story than combat. Ragnorak improved upon 2018's combat and gameplay systems in great ways

I care about both. But the story and characters went so far off a cliff that it pulls you out of enjoying the combat.

Replaying the game is brutal too with so many slow walk, shimmy through a cliff etc bull shit. The beauty of GoW1-3 is you can dive right into any of them and just play play play.

2018 has these slow moments but Ragnarok dials it up to 11. And as we mentioned the story is dog shit and a half. I didn't want to spend time anymore in this world with these characters anymore.

Luckily this game is ditching that so the fresh palette is a chance for good shit to go down.

Also I should mention I wasn't for another game starring a chick, and Faye is a meh character, BUT I do find how she looks in game bad ass and her fight style seems interesting in the 20 minute video. I am hoping there isn't a lot of the shit they showed with hit R2… just play the cut scene dude ffs.

You literally truncated the title. lol

God of War Laufey Director Pushes Back on Cosmic Cube Criticism: Phranque Was Always In and Enables "Super Cool" Mechanics
I mean let's be real I can probably call some mechanics:
-Knock into enemies for short stun
-Absorb an enemy to hold them for a long stun
-Use cube to jump on it to reach higher ledges
-Cube can break into smaller pieces or stretch to make a bridge

Shit writes itself.

Why are people comparing cube to marvel? Are there even any cubes in it?
I'd understand comparing it to disney as a whole because of the cute little creature at the beginning, but marvel specifically? The cube seems more like something from D&D or just a symbolic motif.
