Her wording is also very careful here as to me

rather than just the most premium, high performance console in the world

can be read in two different ways as in instead of or rather than just the one device

She didn't say much honestly because if she was breaking some sort of news it wouldn't have been done in this manner imo
I see it your way too, she is speaking in a way that doesn't commit to anything. Granted, everyone is trying to find ways to make their hardware cheaper, MS is not alone in this. It's just that it is a bigger pivot than what the others had to do because they started out at a much more expensive baseline.

But being non-committal is not what Xbox needs. Pick a plan and stick to it sink or swim, I say. But what do i know, I am not a green rat...

I guess we were off the mark with that $1200-1500 Helix price guesstimate. :messenger_hushed:

"We will, you know, continue to look at new business models I think is what is needed for console rather than just the most premium high-performance console in the world.

I think we've reached a point where it will be hard to imagine that mass audiences can afford thousands of dollars to spend on a console generation and so I think we'll start to see radically different business models that we never expected start come into orbit later this year."

I agree they need to lay out their plans and stop this wait and see shit

Plus when they do actually want to make some news it wont be through some interview on YouTube with a channel like this

It might have been less than $2000 using last year's numbers. But after this year's RAM apocalypse there is just no way. Helix was always meant to be a premium PC, but premium PC parts became unobtanium somehow before anyone notices.

The idea of last-minute hardware changes this late in the cycle is simply not feasible. This must be a real shitshow.

The original plan calls for a premium device that mostly sells at a profit. If the parts explode in price to the point that ate all the profit, they either lose money selling a computer, or releasing it at Apple prices. MS know they are not Apple.

There seem to be a shift for everyone. So Sony likely delays PS6, Steam Machine likely launch at premium pricing despite them not wanting to, and Helix got pushed so far off the value proposition that it falls off the table entirely.

Its incredible - they should be happy with the showcase by now but they mess it all up again with poor timing and making changes that cause trouble for a partner like Sony, and their audience. Halo would have looked cool on Sonys show captured on a Pro, and E Day should have been on PlayStation. Its just poor timing, in the middle of a showcase period for the industry.

Edit and even more confusion around the hardware situation

It feels like Asha only got this update in the last 24hrs which would also explain why the exclusives are now also being backtracked so quickly after their game show.

did they backtrack? she just gave them two, and will be case by case?
From another thread that arrived today:

Article:
Our business isn't particularly healthy, as you noted, and we're starting by introducing 1 or 2 signature exclusives, and as the business is healthy, we will look to try and do more."

I wonder what she's talking about

"and so I think we'll start to see radically different business models that we never expected start come into orbit later this year."

Are they going to pretend All Access is some new strategy like their "case by case"?

Is she talking about EA Play like gamepass for switch and PS?

Looks like a powerful Xbox with steam is out the window. Only reasons I was interested in one.
Same. They have kept up the 'play your PC games' line until recently - wonder if they are going to palm it off as - you can play your play anywhere PC games on it.

Phil's power chase was always strange to me. Two back to back Xboxes touted as "the most powerful console" proved that this is not a winning strategy. Especially when there's debate, many PS5 games still ran better even if the on paper specs of the Series X were better. And then when the Pro came out it wasn't even true anymore.

I want a powerful console but it's not the most important thing. 360 should've proven that exclusives and affordability and launch timing are all more important than power, so long as you're not severely underpowered compared to your competition. Proven further that the Series S massively outsells the Series X (or did back when anyone was buying them).

Who knows how this turns out but I think Asha at least knows how to say the right things.

Yeah and at the same time she continues to distance herself from the previous talk of "premium", "most powerful". Maybe she is just trying to lessen the hype Sarah Bond was throwing out. Hard to say.

At this point, I'll believe in the existence of Helix when I see it - literally. Same goes for all the other things they throw vague PR out for. :messenger_expressionless:

She's talking too much. Their message is all over the place, no wonder Xbox can't seem to stop stepping on their own rakes over the years. She's making the same mistakes Phil made. How hard is it to shut up and only speak when you have a firm commitment and plan?

Yeah just dont say anything until you are ready to actually reveal something

The problem is that she is being invited to all these places to talk and she's giving the most vague-ist answers she can without going into specifics, likely because they haven't finalized the spec-locked specifics themselves.

Maybe we can also kinda ease up on taking individual quotes from interviews and push news articles from them.

Just a thought. 🤷‍♂️

aka leave the semi attractive multi millionare executive alone . jpeg

She's doing the right things if the goal is to preserve and course correct the eco-system after a really rough generation, at least for market share. The very limited exclusivity stuff though, kinda half a step back after 20 steps forward. And kinda odd the people above her switched from go 3rd party to go ahead and go exclusive again. Wonder if part of her job is to get hardware / ecosystem in a position for spin off sale while MS remains a 3rd party pub. If not, this company really is all over the place on gaming direction imo.

20 steps forward???

My dude they're rebuilding the brand because they were losing more and more money

I get you guys want one machine that plays every game known to man, but that's not reality

Just buy a fucking XBOX

Roblox/Fortnite type business models?

if you cant tell this is the same hopium as when Xbox first bought Bethesda, and then Activision, I dont know what to tell you. Its ok to want exclusivity, but we've seen when exclusivity doesnt yield results of more boxes being sold, or the increase game pass numbers.

Xbox actually had exclusives. They had all the games exclusively, till 2024. Even in 2024, it was just 4 games that went over.

Now they released everything but just 2. and people think Xbox consoles are goign to sell.

Crazy.

I mean msft has had a better 1st studio showing than Sony this gen. I don't even think that is debatable now.
OK so with the fastest hardware, the best games according to you, GamePass etc... why have they only moved 1/3rd the consoles Sony has? Not only that why have they gone backward in sales?

Pc? Maybe their customers went to the pc?

Wiiu had an awful showing but had some great first party games all things considered.

I hope there is still a helix. If they want to introduce a new series s type console to go toe to toe with ps6, so be it. Just put enough memory in it.

Me personally, I need something on the higher end to tempt me into an Xbox or I'll just go 100 percent pc for myself and might get one of these lower powered boxes for a spare room, but I'd prefer not to.

If you care that much about graphics you are free to buy a $5000 PC or whatever this shit costs nowadays.
Consoles (and handhelds) were always about mass market affordability, ease of use and new gameplay ideas that work around technical limitations. The more they strayed away from that the shittier and more PC like the whole console business became. See PS5 and Xbox Series. The hardware is expensive and boring, the games are boring and any kind of innovation is basically gone. All there is left is the same ray traced U5 slop you got on PC.
