Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles

By annoucing it this early the idiots have opened up to publishers now dumping physical editions earlier then necessary. Clown shit.
They had to give fair warning to the masses because they know ps6 is coming soon and probably no disc drive.

Better to get flak now in preparation than telling gamers dec 31 2027 no more disc sales going forward. And then ps6 launches in 2028 or 2029 with no drive. That would poss off all the disc buyers.

but can you sell them???

If it is that much cheaper for a superior version it gets a lot more bearable

I guess this means even if PS6 does comes out it wont even disk drive as option and that means backward compatibility is pointless since 90% games I own are physical.

I guess I can't even sell my PS5 toward PS6 because I need it to play my physical copy of my PS5 games.

I'm hoping Sony is smart enough to sell a seperate disc drive for the PS6 for this very reason.

I can buy new steam games outside of steam for 25 to 35% off. Why are you comparing it to the shitty anti consumer psn?

Can you sell them or let someone borrow your games? Plus, why act as if PSN doesn't have any sales of their own?

to all the people who say they're going to dump PlayStation and go to PC
doesn't PC have the same problem where you don't own shit

STEAM sales seem a lot more generous than PSN.

Plus far better graphics and performance.settings.

Plus mods.

So if Sony wants to force me into an all digital ecosystem, then I'll strongly consider gaming somewhere like PC on which there are many other perks.

PSN sales are still vastly overpriced compared to PC keys.

Very true. But lets not act as if games on the PSN store and Xbox store has no sales. Unlike Nintendo, you can get games at a good price on their digital stores. And this is a reminder that with Sony doing this, they will only be competing even MORE directly with PC gaming now.

They will have to try to somewhat match Steam sales going forward.

They are killing physical for complete price control combine this with their dynamic pricing and you will have no sales at all.

Steam itself is competing with tons of key stores tho.

Sony wont match any of this. They expect you to suck it up.

I wish something good could come out of this future digital only hellscape. I mean thinking about it discs have just been glorified key cards for years now, no matter how much or how little data is on it the drives are too slow to run the games off them, in my perfect world they would just put a key card of some sort in the box which you could later sell on if you wish. But of course they won't do that as they would love to kill the resell market and monopolise the market.

Games on older systems rarely if ever went on sale on PSN. So if you're late to the party you're just paying full price. In addition to having to wait until the only storefront decides to discount a game you want on newer games.

They kicked off the era of €80 games with the PS5—one of the worst generations in history, thanks to a stubborn and greedy GAAs strategy. Now, they intend to launch the PS6 generation by ditching physical media and releasing €1,000 consoles. Fuck Jim Ryan, fuck Hermen Hulst, and fuck Hideaki Nishino—the most mediocre and pathetic CEOs in PlayStation history. I hope PlayStation goes under and that history holds you responsible for it.

Can't believe people are celebrating the death of physical. We consumers are getting less options and the corporations are at full control of sales, pricing and distribution. You have NO idea what you are embracing because these greedy companies only want full control over your ownership and purchases.

When games hit $100 on average with no refund policies, are broken, filled with microtransactions and so on, gamers are going to be the first ones whining on social media saying, how did we got here? Why is GTA6 still $100 even after 5 years? What do these digital sales always suck? Have fun with your more expensive games that rarely go on sale and having no choices where to buy games. It's all about making these CEOs and shareholders richer and not about supporting the developers and studios.

I'm going PC because I'm don't wanna pay to play online and can play pre ps4 era games ,, plus I can use a PC to watch any TV show or movie for free . I'm not gonna buy a $1000 machine that basically only acts as a subscription and service box with shitty 3rd party applications like discord, youtube and spotify that have limited functionality compared to a pc or phone. Why would stay with a platform that has killed service to games I like shortly after they release a new console or entry to a series comes out . No point in staying when all 3rd party devs have gone mutliplatform and all 1st party is nothing but gaas and woke slop !!

You will save money longterm too. The up-front costs can be steep but if you are someone which buys a lot of games it is a no brainer tho.

Maybe Sony will provide a solution in order to not alienate PS5 physical games user base maybe not.

What this confirms is that PS6 games are digital only.

Is predictable that PS5 cross gen games will be digital too because the end of disc production seems to coincide with PS6 launch.
Not sure if we'll end up having any PS5 games not ported to PS6 releasing digital only.
