PlayStation Fans Are Canceling PlayStation Plus Subscriptions in Droves to Protest the Shift Toward a Digital Future

Tons of fans online are banding together in a bid to get users to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscription, with the aim of sending a message to Sony that an all-digital future isn't one they want to live in—it's always been said to speak with your wallet!

One user in particular, Pyo on X, has even gone as far as to detail exactly how to cancel PS Plus, whilst ending on a rallying call for the community: "Speak up today or lose ownership forever!"



Underneath the post, numerous users have shared screenshots of their cancellations, with many opting to deactivate their renewing subscription. It's incredibly clear that a large portion of the community is upset with the decision to kill off physical media, and for good reason, though it's a slightly complicated tale.

I cancelled today. Still good until December. Call me whatever you want, but I'm not supporting digital only console without some form of gaurantee that I will never lose access to content I pay for.
 
Proud of the insane amount of YouTube videos (with very high views) I keep getting recommended, not to mention the thousands of X posts with engagement and likes far exceeding the original PS post with 100+ millions views.

I've never seen such backlash before in my life. And they deserve every bit of it.

There's a ton of defense for this (People will still buy PS6/won't cancel/boycotts don't work/everybody buys digital these days anyways etc) and it's amusing to me because I know it's actually because people don't want to see their preferred brand/console hurt.

We're going to make them hurt. It's for the best though.

Just so you know that Pyro guy is a middle aged bloke crying about video games.

He thinks this is the biggest story in the world this week outside the World Cup.

You could cancel now, access will end in December but maybe the message is a bit louder by cancelling now.

I've cancelled mine as well. We saw what happened with Xbox when they saw mass gamepass cancellations. I think a large cancellation on Sony's end will trigger a review of their approach.

Regardless, as long as this stands, the ps5 pro will be my last Sony console. I'll take my money and pour it into my pc. I bought multiple ps5s at launch, then upgraded them to the slim and then to the pro. The amount of money I've given Sony this gen outside of services has been ridiculous all for a handful of shit games. They can go kick rocks.
 
You know what actually makes sense…stop buying digital and buy only physical…but I don't expect any of these bonehead protesters to really have any common sense, so it checks out. These are the same type of people that sit in front of traffic to protest shit. That has nothing to do with cars.
 
Sony is diabolical. When I canceled my subscription, they immediately offered me a 25% discount for the next 12 months. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Imagine how many people will see that offer and think, "Eh, maybe they're not that bad."

Those motherfuckers are masters of psychological manipulation.

Go corpo shill elsewhere. In 2026, artists are still selling vinyl, technology from 1948. As long as the market exists, the option should still exist and the market very much exists.

Sony is just trying to enact a digital monopoly so they can force prices up without competition. Fuck that noise especially now that they mainly make shit games.

You can't buy physical when there won't be physical releases (GTA6 already do this).

They limit/gimp physical releases for years -> "consumers don't buy physical games" -> end of physical releases.
 
It's very difficult to boycott while remaining part of Sony's closed ecosystem; they make money off literally everything you buy there, so selectively canceling just one thing won't work.

And have you ever entertained the idea you might just be a short-sighted simpleton arguing with people who have evaluated a number of factors and very likely future scenarios that completely escape your basic and superficial viewpoint of the matter?

I'm not forcing you to activate your neurons, but someone writing stuff like "Going all-digital at the start of the PS4 gen was the best gaming decision I've ever made." should at least have the decency to refrain from arguing against those who are trying to resist, on your behalf as well, a future you will not like. As would anyone with a functional brain and an ounce of dignity left.
