What's the point of putting 44GB on the disc when the game can't even be played. There's 44GB of data that is what exactly? Stuff like this should have been stopped in its tracks, but we all know Sony doesn't care. If anything, they probably encouraged publishers to do this. I'm surprised they even put a label in front tbh

Nah, there's lots of games that work directly from the disc with no internet required. There is a trend with shit companies like Ubisoft, MS, etc. doing what the tweet is talking about, though.

People like you just don't get it. This is not about the game not being on a disc or collecting etc. It's not about whether you prefer digital or technology has killed off physical media and its ineveitble to go digital only etc. It's about consumer policies, Sony's anti consumer practices on monopoly pricing, there are no protection policies on purchases, locked into one option for game purchases at whatever high price Sony dictate and what the company is doing and how they are doing it. It's people like you who only think in one dimension. You probably don't even think about how this is impacting other countries, like your country is the only one that exists. GAF is getting so bad with these drive by comments by people that add nothing and are just clueless.
People would embrace the digital world a lot more if Sony had good consumer policies on their digital products but they don't!!!

They only offer it at certain times of the year, like during the days of play. My sub always expires during the days of play (because one time I didn't renew until the days of play because I wasn't paying full price for that shit). When my sub expires during the days of play, they offer me the discount the second it expires. I've been getting Premium because with the discounts it's almost the same price as Extra. It's $107/year (amounts to $8.91/month) versus $101/year (amounts to $8.41/month). I just renewed at the start of June, before they announced this no physical BS, otherwise I wouldn't have.

The main reason some PS5 games don't contain the full game on disc these days is because it would require 2 discs and publishers don't want to pay extra for the 2nd disc and the special case to house it. Sony doesn't force publishers to do so, so most will choose not to. There are exceptions like Final Fantasy Rebirth where SE specifically touted that the physical version was the full game across 2 discs.

Never get the folks being hostile to people who simply want physical copies as there's no reason to be against people that want physical disk/copies in the first place.
I'm a PC Steam and Battle.net user for well over a decade now and haven't gotten a physical copy of a game since the PS3 days. But I sure as hell got no problem with people wanting physical disks. Being against physical users has to be the dumbest thing to be against whether you're digital or not.
And even as a digital only guy, I still want to video game stores to have a bunch of physical game copies on display, same goes for having physical movies in stores as it makes the place more lively and good looking.

Whilst I had 0 intention of buying a PS6 anyway and have been umming and arring about keeping PS+ for a while now, having the physical media option thrown out the windows made this choice a lot easier.
Vote with your wallet people. If companies dont want to listen to you they dont deserve your business. Ive been a Sony / playstation customer since PS1. There are plenty of alternatives to Playstation if they dont value our business.

And the data for the game is stored on the backend of PSN, even if it was delisted in years to come from the Playstation Store, you or someone that bought it then can still pop the disc in and it'll retrieve the data.
Obviously is PSN isn't available at all, the disc would be useless.

The way that the PS5 Pro requires an extra purchase to use disc media and the PS5 now being digital-only by default, not a clue ?
The strong evidence that Sony are preparing both a handheld and regular PS6 model not suggestive that disc as a general distribution model just isn't practical ?
Its a done deal, which is why they are announcing 18 months in advance.

I understand why fans of physical copies are upset. I personally moved away from discs back in the PS3 era, after my MK9 disc somehow broke on its own after just a month. It's just that lately there has been so much negativity online about this topic that it's becoming really exhausting. I'm not against benefiting from the situation if it leads to something good for players, but it feels like there simply aren't enough people who still care about physical games to actually make a difference, and Sony's arrogance means they probably won't even bother listening.

I've done my part. I'm also selling my PSN account, along with my PlayStation games and hardwares. I've ordered a ROG Ally X and a NeoGeo AES+. I've been with PlayStation since the original PSX launched with Ridge Racer. It's been a great run, but it's time for me to move on.

I'm just tired of people reacting without actually thinking through what the situation actually is, and why we're at this point.
All-Digital has been a long time coming for anyone who's actually been paying a minimal amount of attention to the market. So when I see journos and influencers ginning this up as some sort of unprecedented shock event, its obviously a cynical and performative outrage to draw clicks.
The bottom line reason as to why we're at where we're at is simple: Most people prefer digital, or at least accept it as an adequate substitute.
