Artificial Intelligence has been used to design brand new viruses that are fully functional and can replicate in the laboratory, say US researchers.

It is the first time whole genomes have been successfully designed by AI.

The resulting 16 novel viruses were created to infect bacteria and pose no threat to people.

The breakthrough has been labelled a "very significant turning point" in science that could unlock a new era for treating disease. But experts have also warned AI-designed viruses raise "urgent" safety and security concerns.

The technology works similarly to large language models, like ChatGPT, which predict sequences of text.

In this instance the AI models, known as Evo1 and Evo2, predict the language of life rather than words.

The AI models were trained on genetic codes from viruses, bacteria, plants and people.

They were then refined to produce a type of virus, known as a bacteriophage, which infect only specific species of bacteria.

The Stanford researchers picked the most promising 302 AI designs and synthesised them in the lab. Of these, 16 proved effective at killing E. coli bacteria.
 
These past few weeks with had AI companies celebrating that their AI was able to hack other companies. Now we have AI designing viruses, which are harmless.........for now.

Not to mention the issue with data centres hoovering up RAM, trashing the environment and the job losses from AI.

Maybe it's time to dial back on AI? It seems like we're sleep walking into a nightmare dystopia.
 
The drones and assisted mobile load bearing transport units (AMR's and SPMT's) are the real worry/concern/threat/itsalreadytoolate..they are scary af. The virus's will just clean up what is left.

Why are AMR's and SPMT's scary?

I'd think drones are far scarier and more capable than robots designed to lift things.

Those are the media friendly names for autonomous troops and their transports.

Drones are nasty for sure but they typically only carry a single payload and can be defeated with chicken wire and/or safety netting.

This is where Terminator got it wrong, Skynet/AI doesn't need to bathe the world in nuclear fire when a pathogen with a 99% fatality rate will do the work and leave all that nice clean factories/infrastructure.

Bacteriophage therapy is very old, just using naturally occurring ones. These manufactured phages can be patented, so they are more appealing to drug companies.

Traditional antibiotics are running out, bacteria are evolving resistance faster than we can discover or design new drugs. So, in theory, these viral bectors would open up a lot of new treatment options.
 
"Trying to predict."

These models are trained on the genetic code of existing bacteria and viruses, and are trying to predict new ones. It sounds like a fluke. "Oh, what will they come up with?"

I don't know much about this stuff but to me something could easily go wrong here.
 
What's the benefit of this?
There's obviously amazing benefits of this. Imagine vapour factories constantly pumping out genome that kills common cold symptoms driven by ever changing AI algorithm tailored to that person specifically in Metros and Public centres. Virus keeps evolving and AI predictable created Genome keeps killing it before it spreads.


Ofcourse. Eventually. We WILL get Covid-GPT that will kill us all. No aliens, No nukes, just a planet filled with 10 Billion dead humans.
 
This is how diseases will be cured. This is how cancer dies. You can fear it now and it will cost lives inevitably as anything does, swimming pools for example. The lives it saves will be countless.

Even if you stop it in America the research will continue unabated in China. The need for chips will only grow as robots from Mitsubishi and SpaceX hit the mainstream market. With a > 2 year road ahead without meaningful regulation our buildout will be complete as it has already been well underway for years.

To fight it....why? So The Professor can keep their job? So your kids can keep their right to work a factory? Can't we at least admit we see the dream, even if we think the reality doesn't exist, can't you even imagine a future where AI helps humanity? Are we that deep in the coolaid? Did we forget the dreams of our youth and trade them for cynicism? Would we rather run out the clocks on our own lives miserly hating AI than take the time to learn and embrace it today? Remember who you are nerd men. There was one time when you would have loved this, joined me, when you still dreamed. Did hate give way to hating? Did life beat you down so much that you can't find joy in real AI, robots, and chatbots? The sci-fi of our youth. The main character in all of our games.

Join me and grasp the promise of our youth. Allow your own intelligence to be unleashed thru the power of AI. Turn your jaundiced eye from your influenced AI hatred and point it inward. What do you see? Realize we are all flawed beings and that we are stronger together.

Damn is this really true or we are predicting next 10-50 years with current resistance/designing in mind.

Absolutely true. Multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria are a MASSIVE problem.

The 'good' news is that these bugs are mostly present in hospitals, so sick patients get them ('bad' news is usually by staff and equipment not properly cleaned), not regular folks walking around town. There are some exceptions, like MDR tuberculosis, common in prisons and such. These things happen because folks take antibiotics too often, and then for not long enough, so bacteria get 'almost' eradicated, but the ones with the greatest resistance hang on till the end, then they are the ones that repopulate, spreading their resistance genes to future generations. Most antibiotics are based off plant compounds found in nature, not designed entirely in a lab.

So these artificially designed phages HOPEFULLY will be so targetted that they can only hit bacteria and have zero ability to disrupt human cells. But since we all came from bacteria, there is a big overlap in proteins and pathways so we'll see, And of course if we drop a few billion into making anti-bacteria virii, well, not a huge leap to change targets to humans
 

Check out these robots they've designed to combat wildfires. You could very well send these off to find viruses in the wild.

That is both awesome and one of the scariest things I have ever seen. A heard of these running around wielding chainsaws would make a great horror movie.
 
The deep states of all the world governments are likely already well underway designing the next 'pandemic' and I would put money on that
