Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie - IndieGoGo Fundraising Campaign

Aren't the narratives and effects sequences the worst part of Nerd reviews? Why would you want that for 90 minutes?

At least this guy set the bar nice and low for every other Movie Star of the Web to skip over:

...
James has a love for film making, comparing him to a animated turd like Fred is stupid, also if narrative s are the worst parts of his reviews it's because it's a review first, the narrative is just there to move things along and to frame certain parts of the game.

I liken the narrative portions of the nerd videos to the sketches in Mystery Science Theater 3000. Obviously the reason why you're watching the show is for the riffs, but there's a certain charm to the skits that give the show its look and feel.

With complete creative control, I'm confident James will deliver a product that all AVGN fans can enjoy.

I know the movie is supposedly based around the E.T. Atari game, but what are the legalities surrounding footage of games in an actual film? I mean, could he hypothetically show clips of SMB3 without getting Nintendo's permission?

Falls under a fair use exception, not sure which one. Either that or the companies are not dumb enough to make a stink about it cause shutting down AVGN would be a PR nightmare.

Nice to see those pics I am really excited for this movie. Also kind of excited for James, the man has a passion for this and it must be exciting getting to shoot a film like this and I am sure he has worked incredibly hard to make this dream happen. Best of luck on this film I'll be waiting.

This reminds me of those season premiere Simpsons episodes where they would go on a GREAT BIG ADVENTURE and would thus miss the point of the show's depiction of the average American family. Love the Nerd and enjoy his criticisms, but it seems likely that this movie will be lacking the heart of what made the Nerd popular in the first place.

Reminds me of Peewee Herman and his movie personally.

It can work.

Yeah, comparing the AVGN to Fred is just stupid. James is the creator and director with a background in film-making. He's also making something with his full creative control.
Regardless of passion, the nucleus behind AVGN and Fred is that they are web sensations whose fanbases justified pushing the brand into the next logical place. Fred, as a final product, set a very low bar. If the AVGN Movie is only kind of a piece of shit that'll be a victory for many. That's all I'm arguing.

Hey, here's another project that borne out of creativity, passion, and a rabid fanbase (spoiler, it was an enormous disaster):

I don't know about you, but I'd pay good money (rather than bad money) to see a fully realized CG bugs Bunny fight in a warehouse full of empty cardboard boxes.

Licensing would cost more than the CG, even if the CG was Avatar levels.

People will be asking the same question re: the AVGN movie on the eve of Oh Long Johnson: The Movie.

I still haven't heard an objective explanation as to why AVGN as a premise should be adapted into a feature film.

Because it's his dream? He's wanted to make a movie based on the character since 2006? He's given us close to 7 years of free entertainment, I think he's earned the right to do his dream project.

Is that ok?

so if the avgn movie does not live up to your expectations and lives up to other people's expectations, then it'll be a victory for the people who like it. riveting stuff.

Also, you don't have any sense for genuine homegrown projects vs. things hollywood greenlights. Hint: look at the writing, directing, and editing credits-- random dudes for hire vs. James and his friends who have been working with him for years + people who give a shit about the project. also, one star is a teen kid, the other is a 30 year old with a lifelong passion for film + the technical knowledge. which one do you trust to do something real and which one was a hollywood experiment in bringing youtube videos to the big screen?

they both have videos on the internet, that's the "nucleus" of similarity and it ends there.

There are things to be skeptical of in the project, but no reason to be super negative about it yet, imo. It's a good sign that we are getting updates and people look like they're having a good time.

Be patient and if it sucks, you'll have your "told ya so" moment.

For me, I'll be happy if it turns out to be a funny hour and a half long nerd episode with decent production values (even the not-so-great nerd eps end too soon for me.) Expecting anything more is crazy.

I'm so thrilled about this. I've been following the nerd since 2006 and I am really happy for James. No matter what happens with this movie, I'll still see this as a souped up AVGN episode. If it's better than the sum of its part, then more power to everybody.

I just cross my fingers and hope that we won't see shitty, generic one-note supporting characters. It should be about the nerd first and foremost.

Agree with this completely.

posted an update:
"Just an update. I’m halfway through my Hollywood adventure of making my feature film. Out of 27 planned days, we’ve just nailed 14 of them. (Not counting scenes I have to shoot on the East coast.) I’m looking forward to returning home and making some more quick internet videos. They’re so much easier! I miss my home, but I gotta tackle this beast first! There’s a lot of hard work coming up, wish me luck."

Does that mean he'll continue to make his regular 10-15 mins AVGN videos after the movie? :D

Hmm, looks like they are having fun filming this movie. I can't wait to see some early promos for it. Also, I like that there is a green screen behind the van door, I guess they will be filming the internal vehicle scenes the good old fashioned way.

I really wonder how they're coping with the $325,927 budget they raised from indiegogo? I'm sure they will be using every trick they can think of to save money. But I am interested in seeing where the funding went too.

I just started re watching some AVGN movies this past weekend and really enjoyed the Castlevania videos he made. I like how he reflects on his childhood a lot and how fond he is of the series. Made me remember my childhood and my love for Mega Man games. I never was much for Castlevania but watching those videos made me fire up my Wii and complete the first Castlevania game for the first time ever. It really is a tough game.

I imagine most of it went towards those L.A. sets. sounded like that was more expensive than he thought.
