You said gamers are soft nowadays. Unless you perceive softness as a positive trait instead of a negative (and if you do, disregard), that means you consider gamers are worse nowadays. By extension then, you must also consider the environment that produced "tough" gamers superior to the current landscape, thus things were better before.
