Atari Ships DRIV3R for PlayStation2 and Xbox (PR)

Atari has shipped DRIV3R, the highly anticipated action-driving game for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft, to retail stores worldwide today. Notice he didn't talk about the on-foot missions, of which there ARE MANY.

Just out of curiousity, what 3xactly is wrong with the on-foot s3ctions? I'v3 r3ad many r3vi3ws of th3 gam3 but th3y r3frain from d3tails. Is it a probl3m with sc3nario d3sign? Control? AI? Lack of polish? All of th3 abov3? I'm r3ally quit3 int3r3st3d to know just what w3nt wrong...

the on-foot gameplay in driv3r is so bad, it makes the on-foot gunplay of GTA3 and The Getaway look ingenious by comparison.

it isn't that the actual controls are total shit (although it really could have used a wall lean/shoot feature), but imagine playing max payne without the ability to shoot dodge or do much of anything else. you jump like a hardboiled ballerina, while basically strafing left and right to fire at people who don't react to bullet hits, lack any sort of A.I., and take more shots than it should to kill.

for a game that looks as good as driv3r, the on-foot segments are incredibly inconsistent and seem really tacked on.

chespace have you played. i know that some people have gotten early copies of the game?

also...IMO its a driving game, so I’m not nearly as concerned about the on-foot mode…I wanna crash me some cars...

Yeah, but if you are forced to play a whole lot of crap in order to get to those driving sections I think you might take issue with the game.

thats what i am trying to understand though. how do you know you have to in your words play a whole lot of crap to get there to those driving sections...i mean, do you guys have the game. and if so, where can i go get it..i know its out as i said earlier in some stores early cause i read it somewhere online.

chespace writes for XBN, and Driv3r was also playable at E3.

I really enjoyed driving and crashing into things, though it's far, far from realistic.

thank you buddychrist...for answering...at least we know chespace wasn't making that up and that he actually has played it..its always hard when you are trying to learn new names and stuff...ha

tho i am going to wait until i get word on the FINAL copy of the game. I have already read over at gamespot that some of the people that got it early have enjoyed playing the final copy. i have my eyes peeled.

Well, some people HAVE enjoyed it. Fennec-fox, for example, seemed to like it quite a bit. However, even those who did enjoy it didn't really seem to care for the on-foot missions which you ARE forced to play through.

it was my understanding that Driv3r has actually been done for months, and the version on display at E3 was complete. The delay was actually due to marketing reasons, not because the game wasn't on schedule.
