Last time I saw Daigo play really good was his run with evil ryu in the final capcom cup of SF4 before they switched over to SF5. He was incredible again for one day but he still only came second anyways.

MenaRD has had a lot more success in the decade since and frequently beats top players.

Daigo does still win some big FT10s with prep time though so maybe

lol intro like 40 minutes late then cut to closeup of empty stage.

e: oh, apparently it's actually scheduled to start 1 hour later than the stream start time? so like 17 minutes still, or at least that's what I saw some random person say

ok they've got a 4min countdown now...

This Tekken is pretty insane, though. I've never watched this game at this level before, I feel like even more than usual in fighting games it's mostly just the two of them standing right in front of each other. Must require insane reactions and muscle memory.

It's not looking good.

Edit: He should've went with Ryu as Akuma gets bursted too easily, but I guess he wanted the mixups/damage with Akuma

Daigo is my favorite fighting game player of all time. He is the Ryu of SF for me.

I also really like Mena. Really great personality, a beast at SF, and has really matured into a great leader and spokesman for the FGC.

That being said, Mena's Blanka is too nasty right now. Not sure if Daigo can win consistently against it.
Yeah…

Damn, shoutout to Menard.

Weird FT10 honestly, was just two different eras pitted against one another.

Never seen Daigo be so unoptimal whilst it felt like MenaRD didn't even play his best.

MenaRD not palying his best is what enabled Daigo to make it look more competitive.
Shoutout to the Beast tho, he is the greatest SF player of the old era and showed it against the greatest SF player of the new era (and arguably of all time).

Does Arslan win Evo after this? If you're dethroning a champ, it very well should be in the grand finals.
Akuma has more tools to deal with blanka's bullshit, but yeah he dies quickly when caught by said bullshit.
This. I get the feeling like if Daigo gets hit, he's basically done for. I am a tad salty Daigo lost just because I've got mixed feelings about his character. This isn't Alpha 3. He was the GOAT with Ken and then Ryu.

As a casual observer, that looked like a great set. Both competitors were absolute class acts afterwards.

I was hoping Daigo would win, but it was still a great fight.

Daigo's already made his money and cemented his history in the scene. He's not hungry for the wins like the up and coming dudes that train 8 hours a day.

But he's a legend for a reason.
Meanwhile the guy still playing at age 44 so he's no doubt still got something in him that want's to keep going.

This was so dumb to watch.

At one point mena is doing a series of attacks drive rushing in repeatedly then once he out of drive gauge does level 2 , gets to keep pressuring and mixing up and there's essentially nothing Akuma can do. Diago just has to sit and block. And one of the commentators was like "that's a nice string by mena"

Was is really though?

It's just so dumb to watch blanka get to be on non stop pressure after any hit lands - even if it's blocked. Blanka is such a dumb character. His level 2 should be nerfed into the ground. Mena would be nothing without it. That shit is retarded.

And personally- he will never have the legacy the old players have. No matter how many 40+ yr old players he beats. SF6 is far more scrubby and dumb than the older games. He would never have done so well in CvS2, 3s, SF4, MvC2, ect.

Blankas' Level 2 is just one example of what modern SF is. 50/50 after 50/50 after 50/50 after 50/50. It's why we have the Menas and Punks and the Birds and now 2 random kids from Chile playing at the top level.

It was an atrocious FT10 that just shone the light even more on the state of SF (Between 5 and 6). Crush Counters and Drive. FMD.

How about if we do FT10s, we go back to 3S or SF4 and see some actual fundamentals and player expression again.

One thing I will give MenaRD, he is the only one playing Blanka at the top, like he was the only one who played Birdie at the top. But still, it has dissolved into something not as interesting as it should be now.

Awsome OP, really appreciate the interview video.
I'm the same age as Daigo and I really admire his drive to still play in tournaments.

Throwback pic of 2010's SF4 Evo qualifiers here in Australia.
(Sorry, my brother had one job, and probably couldn't stay still from Daigo's aura) :messenger_grinning_sweat:
