Doug Lowenstein, president of the Electronic Software Association (ESA), will leave his post as president in early 2007, according to an executive at an ESA member organization. According to the source, ESA members were informed of the news late last week. A public announcement was to have been made this week, but will not surface until after the weekend. Lowenstein leaves an organization still reeling from the decision to radically downsize the group's marquee event, the annual E3 Expo trade show.

If this pans out, "YAY!"

This is kind of highlight of my gaming year. Honest.

When a guy can stand up and brag about how awesome the organization is -- year after year saying how great it is that E3 had turned into a sprawling rabble of nonsense while companies voiced concerns that the event was too big and not concentrated enough. Then dropping the news sometime after E3 2006 saying, "Oh yeah, we've canceled E3. But don't worry we're working on a replacement."

New blood needed. Possibly someone with some vision. I'm sure Lowenstein will move on to bigger and better things.

If this pans out...
