Well, what's gonna be the key point is the second and third week, can it maintain good sales or is it gonna drop-off.

NA sales are going to be the key. The franchise is incredibly weak in Japan overall historically. The fact that it had its best launches ever in its weakest regions Japan and UK, point to incredibly strong NA sales where it's much, much more popular.

You sound like so many Western 3rd parties about the Switch. Although, regarding Metroid...

Third highest selling with only 86k copies? Guess Japan is not very into Metroid.

Series S doing better than I would ever have expected. Is the Series X readily available in Japan?

In didn't do big numbers in the UK either despite I think the highest ever opening. Is the series niche or what? Going by the fanfare from hardcore fans I always thought it was huge.

It's a niche franchise, yes. It has a cult following, for a number of reasons.

It started its own genre. And it was one of the first side-scrollers to implement back-tracking. Prior to Metroid the games would move to the right, Metroid made it possible for you to come back and forth. I know it sounds simple now, but it was a big deal back then.

Oh, and it was the first, or one of the first, major games to feature a female protagonist. So yeah, it's a big deal, even though it never sold like Mario.

The XB Series S beating the PS5 Digital points to MS is going in the right direction with their Japanese Game Pass selections of game offerings. MS needs to keep the momentum going with more quality games that appeal to the Japanese market.

xbox continues to rock..... in a way, wild that it will overtake the xbone so quickly

Could it be the footprint? I live in a small apartment and the footprint of the Series X appeals to me almost as much as anything else.

The only thing it points to is MS are shipping more to Japan. If both had unlimited supply the ps5 sells more.

It's fan favorite, but Nintendo decides to kill it with spin-offs like Other M and Federation force. They misunderstood the franchise. Also nobody at Nintendo knew what to do with that type of gameplay back then and just cant come up with any ideas.

Considering the xbone was a massive box maybe that hurt it in japan, the s by comparison is tiny

Minecraft Dungeons falls out of the Top 50, although it's likely that due to un-tracked sales it's probably close to 80K for the year at the moment.
Next week the PS5 version of Tales of Arise is going to drop out with Demon Slayer joining the Top 50 with it's PS4 version. The only other PS4 game likely to join the Top 50 until the end of the year is Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Top 10 Publishers:

  9. Koei Tecmo - 196.196 (1.4%)
  10. Neos - 183.733 (1.4%)
The big winner this week are Nintendo with another new game in the Top 50 - Metroid Dread, they have gained an additional 0.7% market share in the Top 50. Biggest loss this week is for Microsoft due to Minecraft Dungeons falling out of the Top 50.

I heard on twitter Super Metroid managed to sell 500k in japan, Dread may eventually surpass that number, digital sales must be very strong

Far Cry selling twice as much on the PS4 as the PS5 is telling. The PS5 is dead in Japan. I guess rumors of most PS5s sold being shipped overseas may be true. Or people just aren't buying physical games? I find that hard to believe when Switch physical software sales are doing so well. PS5 ain't doing so hot in Japan.

I'd be curious to know over how long a period of time that 500k developed. It's so long ago though I dunno how that'd be figured out.

Yeah, definitely waiting to see what the North American sales are, and I guess that'll have to wait another month until the data is available to some degree, unless Nintendo pre-empts things with an announcement of a hard "we've shipped XXX copies", though they typically don't do that.

Unfortunately we won't have any hard numbers on Dread until Nintendo's earning report in a few months including digital as well. I expect it to be in the Top 10 NPD for at least 2-3 months, but otherwise we won't see anything concrete for a while.

So a total of 21,425,714 units. That's pretty amazing - it's outsold the Famicom and will presumably shortly overtake the PS2

I honestly never expected to see Nintendo have this sort of traction in the Japanese market since it was so heavily Sony...

Yeah I remember the N64 and GC era Nintendo was really struggling in Japan.

Look at em now. Fucking nuts turnaround.

9+ million PS4s, 1.1M PS5s, sold half as many (and has a free upgrade from PS4), it's dead!

Not just Far Cry. Look at all PS5 software sales. It's not doing well, at all. I think a lot of those PS5s sold in Japan ARE being sent outside the country.
