GAF, thoughts on Auto Modellista?

I'm playing this right now, and man is this game gorgeous or what? The driving is kinda hard, but I'm not sure if it's my lack of skills or the physics of the game.

I asked a few of my friends who are huge racing game fans, and none of them have ever seen this gem. Did a search and could not find any LTTP threads.

So, fellow gaf racers; what do you think about this game?

I shall give it a B. My score might change if I can handle it better. Goddamn spins.

I really enjoyed this game back in the day and played a good bit online. Handling was a little off, but from what I remember it was actually tightened from the JP version because it was way drifty in comparison. Loved how you could do engine swaps (Vette engine in an FD) and it really fed into my Initial D kick with all the JP roads and downhill/uphill racing.

And the cel-shading was pretty tight as well.

It was the racer that made me finally understand 'bad handling' as a criticism, but god, those visuals. Amazing sense of speed, too, especially on Osaka Highway.

I'd love to see it in HD. I bought it because of the art then and I'd totally do it again now.

I actually picked it up recently to play in Dolphin... and it kind of sucked. The physics were awful and it doesn't even look that great in motion (especially the cardboard cutout trees)

Found it for $2 at gamestop a while back. I can't figure out the driving/drifting. Running in an emu can get you HD (check the Dolphin thread for pics). Love the garage designing and car tweaking. Would love to see a sequel. Game would be my go to racer after WipEout.

I remember buying this for PS2 because of how pretty it looked. I love racing games and I really tried to like it but the handling sucked all the potential fun out of it. It seemed like it didn't know if it wanted to be a sim or an arcade style.

wow I had completely forgot about this game! I loved it, especially customizing the car, garage, etc.

I still have it for my PS2. Not the greatest racer, but it's not terrible, and it has a certain charm about it which I love. The garage customization was really great.

This was one of my most wanted games pre-release. Then, after I bought it, I realized you could hold the accelerator down against the walls and go faster than trying to actually drive normally, I gave it up.

Looks super cool but the gameplay sucks.

This! The game looks awesome and the little effects they add for speed really add to the gameplay. Plus you get a whole Initial D / Wangan Midnight vibe when you play it. It's just too bad the rest of the game was fairly crap.

Pretty to look at. Not to play. If Capcom gave it more time and effort, it would be amazing to see in HD.

Artistically it was great, handling was pretty crappy. I still played it to enjoy the visuals but it could have been so much more.

I wanted to love it so much.

But it was fucking awful!

I wanted it to be like Ridge Racer but I couldn't say what it was in the end apart from fucking shit!

Same here, I thought a racing game in that style with some real cars would be interesting. I just thought it wasnt the best playing game. Looked great though, id love for someone who makes racing games to take another try at this style with real cars/driving mechanics.

This game was like crack for me back in the day. I even bought a network adapter for PS2 for this game. I still have the game and the memory save of all my cars that I love to drive. I would kickass in my Mitsubishi GTO......ahhh memories!

Man the sound design was so, so bad. The only good thing about this game are the visuals, and they can be ugly at times.

I remember being interested in this, but I think avoided it because I heard or someone told me it was online only and didn't have a single player mode.

Maybe I was misinformed.

But I always wanted to play this game. The cel-shading thing was really cool back in the day.

I declare myself the Necromancer of Morrowind and since I just played this game on an emulator, this thread get resurrected. Anyway wtf is with that handling? Game has style and vibe, looks gorgeous but the handling is so trash and sensitive. Every single time I even think about making a turn the car spins out.

Didn't they butcher the handling in the us/eu versions for no apparent reason? Try the Japanese version
