How should I play FF8?

I hate myself for playing this game. 70+ hours of my life wasted. Play it on PC.
 
i've been playing it on the PS2, and unless my PS2 is about to die (and it shouldn't be as it plays all other games just fine) there are BC problems with the title. textures changing to garbage. the text textures will sometimes go black, making the game very difficult to play. (it did this on the fight with
Seifer & Edea
.

soft reset doesn't work properly either, and this is immediately visible.
 
I say play it on PS1 on an old TV: the way it was supposed to be played.

I love FF8, and I also think the game gets waaaay too much hate.
 
People are actually playing this on the PS3? I tried to start a game just to check out the upscaling feature when that upgrade went live and the opening CG's skipped like crazy so i gave up. Wasn't my discs either that i can tell since they're pretty much flawless. Anyone else notice this? Really easy to test out since all you have to do is start a new game and it comes up immediately.

I am. The intro didn't skip at all (nor have any of the fmv's) the only problem I have had is when you encounter an enemy the white swoosh (or whatever it is) isn't there or is only partially there.

Same, and for awhile between FW 1.81 and 1.82, the swoosh was perfect.

Went back and started a new game to see if it skipped and no skip. Guess they must have stealth fixed it in one of the last few firmware updates. Color me surprised and kudos to Sony for actually taking the effort to fix it. Nice to know they're still working on getting games BC compatible, really nice since this has to be on the software tweak since i've got a PS3 with hardware emulation and it went from not working to working.

Agreed, PSone on old TV is the only option. A decent SDTV can't be more than $150-200 these days new, and surely someone would let you borrow one for a while.

FF8 is not particularly good, IMO, but it's a hell of a lot better than FF7. I don't understand why it's so reviled.
 
How about you just go and mash a puppies head in with a mallet.

You will feel awful about killing that poor puppy, but not half as enraged when you finally play an beat Final Fantasy 8, and trust me the horror of playing it will last far longer in your psyche than the dead puppy.

Play it on PS1. FF7 and 8 on the PC are atrocious. The music doesn't sound as good as the OST, and the backgrounds get washed out because PC's run at much higher resolutions.

Just went through this thread wow this must be the third Gaf metldown in 2 weeks and it's not even a full second week. O_O

We need new game announcement stat!

I'd tell you to play it on the Playstation (don't know which one to advise you to play), out of experience the PS2 has no issues at all (except trying to draw Ultima magic, those bastards don't seem to appear at all at the end of disc 3), I've yet to even put the disc in my PS3.

Play on PS3:
Pros:
Wireless control
Upscaled image
Faster load/save times
Cons:
No Rumble
Image still looks blurry on HDTV
Emulation may not be 100%

Rumble on most PSX games is pretty cheap. In fact, last year when I played through FF7-9, I turned rumble off to increase my wireless PS2 controller's battery life. And this was before I knew PS3 wouldn't have rumble, so it's not like I was preparing myself for PS1/2 gaming without it or something stupid like that.

FF 7 - 9 has rumble WTF!?

What next Disgaea, Dragon quest VIII and FFXII have rumble to.

I'm tempted to play FFVIII again just because of this thread, it doesn't help that I have various music videos pertaining the old Final fantasy's cutscenes with good music to go with them, like FF9 cutscenes with Phil Colins "You'll be in my heart" in the background, made me feel like blasting through FF9 again on occasion.
 
FF8 and 9 have rumble, that's for sure. And it's especially annoying :lol Always turned it of, summoning was a pain :|

Now I don't remember if 7 has it...


Back on topic, i'd say play it on the PS3.

This put me in a panic and I went to check my discs out to reassure myself. I'm assuming you live in EU?

Glad I jumped on the 60GBs before they went.

I get this same issue with disk 4 only. (Pal PS3)
 
I play it on my PSP. The only probably is the lack of R2/L2 buttons. I can also sit with my girlfriend on the couch and pretend im listening to her conversations :D
 
yep, use epsxe, graphic filter, save state and the most important thing, fast forward/ frame skip to speed up some slow ass animations.

Some of the patches do their best in upgrading the textures, but there's not much you can really do with the prerendered backgrounds without replacing the entire damn things...
 
I've been banned for some silly reasons before, but I think this one takes the cake. Remind me not to ever express my opinion of a game on a gaming message board again, as long as it's negative that is...

See here's the thing.

The thread's not about people's opinion of the game, or comparing it to other games, or whatever.

It's about like going into a wrestling thread and saying, lol it's fake you morons stop watching it, it sucks. I mean, all the above about wrestling is essentially factual, it's fake, it sucks, and people that watch it have questionable intelligence and taste - but you'll still get banned for starting trouble in a wrestling thread.

Of course, I could have sworn I've seen far better games than FF8 get trolled in similar threads without punishments being handed out, but YMMV, and it did. At least the punishment was brief.
 
wow i haven't thought of this game in a long time. holding select during the summons and pushing square until it got to 255 makes my hands groan. that game was kinda hard i guess (i mean compared to seven, which was easy)

It's not like I didn't answer the question, I just added my input of the game. I mean there's probably some reason why the guy quite playing it in the first place, but anyway whatever...

Slaughter, your response (which I don't think was as bad as others) was: "Down the street, take a left at the second set of lights. But the food is terrible, I don't know why you'd want to eat there."

The other banned responses: "Directions? I should just give you directions to the hospital because the food is so shit it will make you sick!"

Now yeah, this happens to other games and isn't caught/called. That's the nature of human moderation, though. Some things will be seen, some will not.

Though I have it on good authority the next NiGHTS thread that descends into trolling the game might just be a bloodbath.
 
This game need some love :D

The characters looks thin & ugly but summon and monsters model was pretty impressive for PS1.
