Iran navy saves US freighter from pirates

AFP – 13 hrs ago-Iran's navy said Thursday it saved an American-flagged cargo ship that was being attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Oman.

An Iranian warship responded to a distress signal from the US-flagged Maersk Texas, a cargo ship of 150 metres (500 feet) and 14,000 tonnes, which was besieged by "several pirate boats," the navy said in a statement reported by the official IRNA news agency.

The cargo vessel "was saved by the navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran" on Wednesday, IRNA added.

The pirates "fled the scene as soon as they spotted the presence" of the warship. Maersk Texas "thanked the Iranian navy and sailed towards its destination safely," it added.

It was the first time the Iranian navy protected a US ship from pirates.

Maersk had sailed from the UAE port of Fujairah, south of the Strait Hormuz at the entrance of the Gulf, and was headed for the United States.

Iran's navy keeps a presence in Gulf of Oman to protect cargo ships and transiting oil tankers and also defend the country against potential threats.

According to Iranian commanders, Iran's navy have carried out hundreds of anti-piracy operations, engaging in hundreds of armed clashes with pirates in the past three years.

The US navy patrolling the area have on a number of occasions rescued Iranian ships. The latest incident was in January when a US warship secured the release of 13 Iranian fishermen near the entrance to the Gulf who had been held captive by pirates for 45 days.

Nothing brings groups closer together than a common enemy. Not a damn thing.

This is why it wouldn't be all bad if aliens invaded.

The world has been getting more peaceful, not less.

And in those hundreds of thousands of years how could anything happen on a "world" scale when there such huge barriers to communication and travel?

So cruising on to the scene and having the pirates run when they saw you is "protecting a US ship"? Ok.

Oh is there a prerequisite or something where you must fire at them and kill them in order to be protecting someone?

So a teacher approaches a bully picking on a kid and the bully runs away when they see the teacher is "Protecting a child"? Ok.

Eh, the group owner for the vessel is the Danish company Moller AP. Maersk Line Ltd is simply one of their US offices.

It should be noted that the Maersk Texas was flagged Marshall Islands, which is a flag of convenience, and was managed by Rickmer's Line out of Germany until September 2011. It was changed to a US Flag and began to be managed by Maersk line Ltd, so as to bring larger vessel into service for customers that needed US Flagged shipping service.

Calling this a "US Freighter" is practically a joke, but then again this is the world of shipping. I would be surprised if the crew was even American to be honest.

That's right. I'm in your pirate threads again.

I don't get it. Do people consider you the Manos of freight threads?

It's one thing for two great nations to have contempt for each other, but it's nice when they unite to thwart the 'greater evil' of cowardly criminals.

I work for a software company that does maritime domain security work.

Yup.

sounds even more boring than what I do! Are there even more than a handful of US based carriers? All the ones I've ever dealt with are foreign owned/controlled.

Yeah...that's what all navies are supposed to do for all ships in distress. Law of the sea and all that.

Still, good on 'em.

There are a few middle sized groups, but nothing big like in Europe. Typically way less than 100 vessels. Edit: actually, I don't think there are even many with more than ~30 ships.

And actually, I sort of love my job. We analyze shipping vessels for threat probabilities and work closely with navies. It's actually fairly interesting.
