Late to the...blah blah, playin' Culdcept

Like I said earlier, the game has adjustments for die roll probability. It becomes obvious when the computer starts to mockingly breeze through entire stretches of board that you own with disturbing consistency. That's as far as I've seen the cheating go, though. And, you can easily break this with a Holy Word card that fixes the number of spaces they move for the next turn.

Also - and you can probably chalk this up to just plain bad luck - CPU players seem to land on other CPU opponents' high-value lands more often, essentially screwing you out of the game indirectly if you don't act quickly and make your own fortune. Despite all of these things, however, CPU matches rarely result in defeat if you just keep on top of things. At worst, you tend to just have an assload of inconveniences to deal with on the way.

Alright. I just finished getting both endings to Prince of Persia: He Slept With the Empress of Time, so tomorrow, it's time for some CULDCEPT!

wo0t! Sorry to hear 'bout PoP bein' iffy, but oh well.

A.Y. - I *have* seen the "CPU Player landing on other CPU players' high-value lands" thing, but it didn't really feel "cheap"...just a little wierd that they left me alone for a couple of stretches.

Yeah, like I said: It could just be bad luck. Sometimes the CPU is subtle about it, and other times the CPU scores a few good cash-ins in less than 5 rounds.

We need an online-enabled Culdcept sequel. I would pay good money for that. Being able to trade cards an such ala Phantom Dust. That would be great.

I'm pretty sure you know this already since you used the words "online-enabled", but the Dreamcast version (and I think the jPS2 ver?) was online. I know a few people in the US who were playing the DC Culdcept II online. I should have played too when I had the chance :/

Yeah, I am aware of the DC Culdcept and IIRC, the Japanese PS2 version of Culdcept did have online play as well but it was stripped for the US release. A damn shame if you ask me. I never got a change to play the DC Culdcept online but a follow-up on either a home console or PSP/DS online would be brilliant.

an online-enabled PSP version would be insanely fun...I'm sure they'd be able to do plenty with downloadable content as well (new CPU characters, new cards, etc etc)

Tried a "colorblind" deck last night...
- started with some useful 40/40 creatures (Knight, Fighter, Gladiator, etc), some useful items (Trident, Crossbow, Boomerang), and some direct damage
- kicked down a bunch of quick move spells (flight, 6-move, that Castle teleport) to get me around the board
- threw in some slowdown stuff for my opponent (0-move, that paralysis or bind or whatever that makes'em stay still)
- finished w/ some quick MP cards (triumph I think it's called? 1.5x lap bonus?) that and the one where you get 50mp for every lap...

...that was basically it. my creatures roved the board, killing anything they came against while I slowed my opponent down to a halt and flew around the board. I really didn't even bother leveling lands until I had nothing left to kill...instead, I concentrated on moving my creatures around to either take land from my opponent or grouping them together (since I rarely got any color bonuses).

It was pretty effective, but I was just practicing vs. some of the earlier CPU opponents...I'm sure I"d get owned by the later ones. Anyway, yeah...cracked out last night, had a blast :D

...and I'm talkin' to myself...
:D
Sucks to have deck ideas, but only 1 or 2 of some important cards. I'd love to make a deck with 4 "0 move" cards, or try a slimmer deck with 2 "Find" cards and a couple of those "draw two cards" cards...but I've only got one of each.

I'd love for this thread to continue indefinitely... Culdcept II is one of the best games I've played in a long time, and probably ever. Definitely one of the best arguments of why the Dreamcast rocked (although, it was later ported to PS2 for the sales). And best of all, it's an awesome game where the gameplay shines through in a dark era of all fluff, no meat gaming.

Nevertheless, the truth is that nobody bought the game or knows what it is, so what can you do.

Dark era indeed.

Nobody has anything to say?
At the very least, tell me my deck ideas suck and I have no idea what I'm doing...

Same here...mainly cuz I'm playing the game for the first time right now, and don't really have anyone local to talk with about it.

I've been too tired to play it, though I did finish PoP. Perhaps this weekend. It doesn't seem like a mindless game I could wind down with before going to bed, and I don't want to ruin my initial experience with it.

Well, after a bit of set-up (and gaining a decent pool of cards), it's a great game to wind down with before passin' out...make a few deck adjustments, play through a match or two, then hit the sack.

Picked this up used earlier today because of this thread. Being a huge M:TG nut, it sounds right up my alley.

Yah, anyone with M:TG experience should catch on fairly quickly.

No, I'm REALLY beat. I'm just sitting here listening to music and reading a new book I just bought. I can't really think about anything, and if my brief foray into that Pokemon Trading Carde game on the GB was any indicator, I need to approach Culdcept with the right mindset, or I just won't "get" it, or get into it.

I WILL check it out soon, however. Just not tonight.

Is Goligan supposed to only give you shit cards? I've been gettin' some fairly decent ones while testing out decks...nothing insanely rare, but definitely useful (Knight...Lillith...Phoenix...) Isn't he only supposed to give you common cards, to encourage you to play the other CPU characters?

Supposedly. I'm not entirely sure myself. Also, he may give you commons or uncommons, but that doesn't mean you have all he can offer. ;)

oh, I know..that's why I like practicing with him so much. quick games *and* new cards...or dupes of useful ones. :D

Single-player cheats because it wants you to use a particular strategy to beat each of the levels (especially the first 15 or so, basically each one except the last two). I remember I was stuck on the island map forever until I retooled my deck to include... something or other, then that map was destroyed onto the next!

I usually build decks around cards like the Dhampir, which are more about taking land then keeping it. There are so many keraaaazy items and non-element cards in the game, and everyone I was playing with stopped after I got all the cards, so I stopped before making any interesting decks. Marvelous game though. It used to be $2.99 used at EB Games, is it still?

Actually, I think the best way to get new cards is to play against humans. After the first game I played with friends, we got a couple A-B ranked cards, even with our trash default decks. If you still want to play the CPU, create a human dummy deck, set it on AI, and play against it. If you REALLY want to get a bunch of cards, create three human dummy decks, set the game to 3 vs. 1 and just destroy another deck. 27 new cards a game, wheeee (although, everyone might get the same cards, but it's not bad to get 3 Dhampirs).

And I don't know if Culdcept really drove NEC into the ground... they were going to reprint it and all since it was a moderate success for them. I think it was more SCEA shooting down every other game they were trying to publish. Y's 1&2 Eternal and their galget games and such.

That's pretty insane, I haven't even tried to play against a dummy deck, or other people...maybe I'll try that out, after I actually beat the stupid game.

Dhampirs are that powerful then?

No. It's still offered cheap in gamestores used (as opposed to online) but it's actually become semi-rare with some ebay vendors trying to get higher and higher prices for it.
