Just finished the game on PS5. Played it on Ultra Violence. Enjoyed it for the most part, 7/10. It was really cheap on a sale not too long ago for like $25. Personally I think that's the right price for it. I probably would have been very disappointed if I bought it new at $70.

This is definitely the weakest in the series of the new Doom games, but I'm happy that each game plays vastly different from each other. I know the devs said that was their goal with the new iteration of Doom.

The giant mech sections of this game were total ass though. Had to force myself through those, luckily they are very easy but they just felt like padding. Surprised that I actually enjoyed the flying sections with the dragon for the most part. Especially the areas the had places to land and do some exploration.

The guns, were, ok... every gun is a viable option, so, nothing like Eternal in that area. What's weird to me though is that the rocket launcher felt like really under-powered, you're better off using other weapons with better rates of fire. I also sort of disliked the way the handled the upgrades with different currencies for the guns. The melee and shield upgrades are the ones that really stand out in this game though.

By the end of it I was getting tired of the parry mechanic. This is a one and done game for me which is unfortunate. The last 2 games I did multiple play throughs back to back. The gameplay loop in those games were much more satisfying in my opinion. Mastering the mechanics in Eternal felt great, when you're rocking hard in that game, you just go into like a meditative state where everything clicks and you're just playing on instinct. The more open nature of TDA never gave me that feeling.

The DLC is going to be pretty huge apparently and is on sale right now on PSN for like $11. Undecided yet on that. If there's any more of the forced giant mech sections then I have no problem skipping it entirely. The DLC for Eternal was amazing though, so here's hoping they step it up for TDA.

Those of you that played it, how would you rate it? Have you played all the new Doom games? Which is your favorite?

I really enjoyed the new mechanics that Dark Ages brought to the table. I'm not a purist, so I put it above Doom 2016. As far as Eternal is concerned, I've tried on 3 occasions to put time into it, but it just doesn't click with me. I quit around the 2 hour mark each time.

I´m playing Dark Ages right now on PC, and i can say...It´s the worst of the three (Eternal is top tier), BUT, it´s a pretty good first person shooter. Thing it´s sometimes doesn´t feel like a proper Doom, because first: that color mechanic for parrying enemy´s attacks... In other hand, i love the melee/displacement using the shield and the hordes, but once enemies throwing specific colored attacks which require parry, really takes away the demonic vibe and stuff which always make a Doom feel like a Doom. You want to feel like yes, you´re a killing machine, but you´re fighting also demons which are coming from hell itself. I´ts like quite a menace, because it´s beyond aliens, mutants, monsters, etc. Eternal, 2016, the classics, 64 and even Doom 3 thriumph on that premise. And this is the second thing which took me off: here you feel like you´re killing generic monsters medieval/fantasy themed. I mean, it´s a great FPS, but not a good Doom.

I think the shield helps a ton with dooms imo biggest problem of taking unavoidable chip damage in previous games.

I enjoyed it.

Its a bit too long and can get intense.

Outside of that, it was great. Dragon and mech sections were respite from constant action. Guess they are there to break the pacing and offer some variety.

I think it needs a sequel to achieve perfection. Hopefully they do that. Still, a new gameplay system gets high marks from me.

Loved it, also because it was super cheap on PSN. I actually liked the mech and dragon sections. The mech sections were just simple fun, and the dragon sections reminded me somewhat of Panzer Dragoon. Few gripes with it, don't really like that they went with the weapon class thing, and the weapon progression was quite unimaginative. The pacing was also a bit off, the last third of the story didn't really have anything new, it was just waves and waves of demons. The story transition from one chapter to the other felt choppy, feels like chunks of narrative were taken out. Other than that I had a great time, but I can imagine being disappointed at full price. There's no reason to come back to it after the campaign other than the horde mode.

Its a very fun game if you can buy it for cheap. But I felt little to no desire to replay it.

Rocket Launcher is really good if you open up the damage absorb perk. You can essentially yolo it from melee range while healing yourself. Most weapons are viable, with some upgrades being the better choice over others. Armor damaging options kind of go out of the window if you have the hookshot leveled up.

I bought it for 200eu at launch and the only worthwhile aspect was the collectors edition statue itself.

Worst entry out of the new trilogy imo.

I'm having more fun with the new Painkiller in co-op tbh.

DOOM 2016, the game got the atmosphere, story, pacing and gameplay right for me, Eternal was too over the top hectic with Arena battles and for some reason irritating wall traversal and from what i have seen of The Dark Ages i just have no desire to play it.

I really enjoyed 2016, it was great. Just pure, dumb action.

Only got through half of Eternal, if that, before bailing. The gameplay loop just didn't click for me, I didn't like the constant arena battles and ammo system where you had to keep switching.

Never played the new one.

I'm finally getting around to this and it's fucking awesome. I'm playing with my awesome headphones and the volume on high.
The premium edition goes on sale for like 30 on PSN and the upcoming expansion is supposed to be huge. After I beat Star wars outlaws I'll be buying it on a summer sale.

Really surprised that Eternal ranks higher than 2016 here, wouldn't have expected that. I need to give it another shot, it doesn't grab me for some reason.

It has a few flaws, like the platforming and the purple goo sections but, aside from that, it's a great game. The core of the game, the shooting, is imo among the best in the medium, and the music is better than in the other games too (for my tastes at least)

I think I just need to stop being a pussy and drop the difficulty lol. I always play shooters on the highest difficulty, and I think I just need to admit that I'm simply not good enough to make Eternal fun to play on that difficulty.

You have no idea how much it pains me to admit that -_-

You know what man, I think it's not your fault but the game's lol. I played it on Ultra Violence (hard) and while the game ended up clicking for me the first few stages, specially the first one, were way too challenging and even frustrating to play through.

Once you have the dash and the double jump a bit later (by the 3rd stage you have most of your tools IIRC) enemies become much more manageable, but that first stage has you playing as a gimped Doom Slayer against lots of enemies including multiple cacos and even arachnotrons, which is just mean lol.

I said this a couple of times, the worst of the 3, it's a hybrid shooter/action dumbed down Doom.
It's way too easy, didn't care for all the matching colors for block and stuff or the myriad of sliders to make it your own. Just trust your vision, have some balls and make a default difficulty.

The first 2 were perfection in their own way, 9 for 2016, 9.5 for Eternal, maybe even closer. TDA for me as a Doom FPS is a 5, but to be more lenient overall a 7.

I beat the base game on Nightmare but it was incredibly difficult. I could never beat DLC1 - The Ancient Gods Part 1 on Nightmare. I hit a wall at the Slayer Gate in "The Holt" level. I refused to drop the difficulty and never finished the DLC. I also never played DLC2 because of it. I know it's my fault but it soured me on the game. I used to think I was good at Doom but TAG1 broke me. It was brutally hard even getting to that point.

Did you play the DLC on release? I believe the nerfed the difficulty with a patch because it was way too much.

Damn bros, so the game is just that hard huh?

Not gonna lie, I feel so much better about myself after reading those replies lol, thanks bros. Maybe I'll give it another shot here soon and see if I can't overcome it, and if I can't do so in ten-ish tries then I'll just drop it one level.

I'm gettin old folks. I recently had to admit to myself that the days of being good at fighting games are well behind me as well, suppose I'll just have to start playing games on normal difficulties......

I did LOL. But even after the nerf I couldn't do it LMAO.

I forget what they changed. My memory is fuzzy but I feel like it went from Arch Vile and Tyrant and a Doom Hunter to a couple Marauders, including a ghost Marauder, or maybe it was the other way around. Whatever the change, it was still too brutal for me. No room to move or hide and all kinds of heat seeking attacks.

In before someone says it's easy both ways, congrats if you found that easy. My fingers can't move fast enough to swap attachments and grenades and juggle all that without feeling like I'm having a panic attack. After about 5 tries of that I'm all anxious and angry. Just can't do it!

Holy shit, yeah I remember a part with 2 marauders at once lmao. I played the whole thing on UV and it was enough of a challenge, don't want to imagine how it is on Nightmare haha.

I kept thinking "what kind of absolute fucking horseshit is this and who the fuck thought this was a good idea, those fucking motherfuckers" LMAOOOOOO.

I couldn't stop F bombing every time I tried it, even called a friend over Discord and started yelling at him because I was so mad hahhahahahhaha.

Oh God, it was such agony.

I know they nerfed the whole DLC after I played it in some key spots, but my god it was absolutely brutal the whole way through. The first stage was hard enough in a few arenas, the Blood Swamp green fog area was nuts, the ghost enemies in the middle of GIANT battles in one of em felt like being anally probed.

Then at The Holt Slayer Gate I was like "I JUST CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!" and kept slamming my fist down on my desk. I've never been so angry at a game in my life and never since. I learned to put games down either for a break or permanently before I get that way anymore, after all that LOL.

Bro, while I didn't keep up with that one as it thoroughly defeated me, I can still relate to this in a big way, and with a Doom game actually!

Doom 2, the original. I know, I know, I suck whatever, I just absolutely couldn't beat that game on the highest difficulty, and I'm amazed at anyone who did. Unbelievably hard. I don't think I even made it half way ---____---

Come to think of it, I guess soul crushing difficulty is just part of the series design lol.

The slayer gates, damn that was some bullshit alright haha. I love how even on the base game they'd sometimes introduced new enemies out of the blue with no warning nor anything, and you could face 2 Cyberdemons at once without warning. Fun times! Although I think I lost a few years of life due to all that stress.

I've been playing videogames for 30 years and I believe DOOM Eternal is, so far, the only game where I needed to force myself to take breaks because while the game is super fun, I could tell my heart rate was increasing dangerously lol.

DOOM 2 can be hard with all those new enemies. It took me some time to beat it and I'd say it's way harder than something like Quake or Duke Nukem 3D.

Coolest thing is that people are still making levels and whole campaigns for DOOM 2 and they can get insanely hard. I usually play those in Normal rather than Hard because otherwise I could never beat them lol.

No lies detected.

If you ever wanna play through Doom 2 coop on Ultra Violence let me know. I might be a little rusty but i usually remember all the strategies the whole way through and I can show you them.

I used to casually speedrun a bunch of the maps in that one.

The Nightdive version from a couple years ago has really easy to set up online coop and includes voice chat and we can make the lobby private.

Bro I've noticed that Doom modders are sadistic as fuck lol. These wads are cool as fuck, love trying em out, (Spawn one was pretty sick), but Jesus these dudes must be complete masters of the game by now and they design their campaigns for other masters it seems, which I am uh....fuckin not a master lol.

Yeah same here, I thought I was good at DOOM until I checked out stuff like Ancient Aliens or Return to Saturn X on Ultra Violence. Turns out I wasn't all that good at DOOM lol. :goog_relieved:

Fuck yeah dude we should do that! That'd actually be sick as fuck. I've been trying for years to get my wife and daughter to play with me but they just don't get into playing Doom at all. They like watching, but not playing at all. When I kick this flu we should dig in and I can frustrate you by sucking while you carry me lol

If you're willing to give yourself some stress and own the Nightdive versiondownload and play Going Down and Overboard mods.

But play on Hurt Me Plenty or lower LOL

Edit: also the offer to play coop goes out to you too. If you ever want to coop just hit me up on Steam. If you PM me we can swap Steam names.

Just hit me up on Steam. I like Doom enough where even if I'm already playing something I'll hop onto Doom instead.

This is the version you'll need

Hell yeah, I'll hit you up soon broseph. Got some games I need to see if you have or want too lol. I do own that one as I owned Doom 1 and 2 prior so got it free :D

Sorry to bump the thread for nothing but I just thought this was amusing; I just looked and I somehow own Doom1+2 on Steam, GoG, PS, Xbox, and Switch.....these mother fuckers have me bro lol

I am a massive Doom fan (hence the name IDKFA) and for me, Doom 2016 is the winner.

It's a game I've grown to love more ober the years as it captures the essence of Doom better than the games that came after it.

It's not my favourite Doom game of all time (That goes to Doom 64), but it's one of the best in the series.

I just love damn filling that I'm indestructible high powered WAR MACHINE !!!
Just go all in & fucking stomp everything, for me it is best Doom game. Doom 2016 is second....Doom Eternal was damn exhausting
with all verticality monkey bullshit.
