Masahiro Ito shares more information about Silent Hill on Twitter

In a recent Twitter exchange, the artist said that telling us what's beneath the helmet is akin to a magician giving away how magic tricks work, but he did confirm that in "no way" was PH's helmet an actual part of the creature.

"I'm often asked, 'What is the under the helmet of Pyramid Head?' But I'm not gonna answer that question. Example, as soon as you are given the trick of a magic, the magic will be nothing to you," he tweeted.

"However there is no way the helmet is the actual head of Pyramid Head."

Interestingly, this contradicts the Making Of Silent Hill 2 documentary that accompanied the original PAL versions of the game. In the documentary, the narrator explained how Ito's vision for PH changed from "a human in a mask" to a monster with a hidden face as "that way it was more disturbing and less human", leading many - including myself - to presume the helmet was actually part of PH's physicality. The triangle itself - with "right angles and acute edges" - "suggests the possibility of pain", as well as representing the monster's role in the game.

"I never said, 'the helmet/pyramid is his actual head'," Ito clarified. "'The pyramid instead of human's face' means just only 'a different look' on design."

The fleshy protrusion hangs at the base of PH's helmet.
In the same thread, fans asked Ito to comment on the back of PH's helmet, specifically the fleshy bulge at the monster's neck. While some presume the feature - seen most clearly in the helmet Konami brought to its Metal Gear Survive game - was added subsequently as PH's design changed over the years, it can be found in some original assets, too. Sadly, Ito had nothing further to add about it, so that's another mystery we've still yet to solve.

Oh, and if you think Ito's going to give anything away about the nine red square savepoint at the end of Silent Hill 2, he's keeping schtum on that, too.

"I'm often asked about the nine red squares at the end of SH2 too," Ito said. "I'm not gonna answer it because of the same reason."

Most astonishing of all? Ito then went on to show us a teeny, tiny, blurry image of artwork purportedly taken from a cancelled Silent Hill project from back in 2013 - a project we had not even known was in development. This means that just a few years before Kojima's Silent Hills - and several years after the franchise had been bouncing between Western development studios - the series had been back in the hands of at least one original Team Silent member...

I thought this was interesting. #ShameKonami

is this the game kojima was working on?

No, this is not. Actually, according to Ito he is under a NDA, so we might never know if this influenced anything. Kojima's work could have been completely separate. I honestly don't think they have anything in common with one another.

Man, I've only played Silent Hill 1 and 2 but the impression that they've left on me will live on forever. Crazy thing is I've played both games in the past 6 years only and they both blew my mind. What an absolutely legendary franchise, can't wait to play Silent Hill 3 and 4 in the next years or so!

Oh.My.God.

Please tell me those 9 red squares aren't hiding a secret that hasn't been found yet......this is unbelievable :messenger_weary::messenger_heart:

As sad as i am about this i think this series should have been put to rest after Silent Hill 2 (even though i loved Silent Hill 3).

Masahiro Ito is extremelly talented though so i'd love to see his work again in games (but on games with bigger budgets than Nightcry).

There is a short doc that speaks on the true Silent Hill 5 that was being developed before being cancelled in favor of passing the series to Western developers.

If Konami was still interested in console games i would have loved to see all the key people from Silent Hill 2 to work on a new horror IP. Silent Hill had closed its circle a long time ago IMO and i think Team Silent would also want to work on something fresh. I strongly believe that if Silent Hills wasn't cancelled it would have been a game that had nothing to do with Silent Hill as both gameplay and philosophy. First person and focusing on jump scares do not match with what true Silent Hill is.

Some things really dont need explaining. The 9 red save symbols just meant "shit is about to go down here". And of course his metal helmet is a helmet, the PH's are old town executioners as seen in paintings and the SH2 lore.

It's so sad that the rights for Silent Hill are held by a slot machine company.

Can't wait for them to get bankrupt and sold to someone else. It couldn't get worse than it already is.

Aren't they doing better than ever financially since switching to making Pachinko machines? Remember reading that somewhere.

I don't know but reality always suck so it's probably the truth.

Just looked it up, they are definitely doing better since switching to Pachinko and mobile games, I just found out they make the Yu Gi Oh mobile game and that thing is a cash cow.

I wish Konami would take some of that pachinko money and just hire an awesome studio to give us another Silent Hill game. Just stay hands off...fund it, and make money

Nah. All 4 were fantastic. Only downside to 4 was its combat. All 3 dripped with atmosphere, memorable characters, and stick in your head years after playing.

I literally could not tell you a single thing that happened in homecoming through. Or Origins. Despite beating them 5 times over. I think Downpour was the closest thing we had to a "good" Silent Hill game again, but it needed better monster designs and another year of dev time.

I would agree, but the back half of 4 becoming a giant escort mission really soured my opinion of the game. I get what it was going for thematically, but man did it not feel great to play.

The animations and graphics were also really bad though. Huge step down from SH3 in those departments.

That would require them to actually give a fuck about developing games.

In the minority, but I'd love another narrative-driven, combat-free entry like Shattered Memories.

I love Shattered Memories, but for me it's not on the level of the mainline Team Silent entries. But I wouldn't be opposed to anything Silent Hill of good quality making a return.

I can't. It's only available on PS3 and PSP.
Hell, I can't even download Dissidia 012 DLC on the Vita.
Probably license issues in both cases.

Yeah that's pretty weird. I mean I believe you, but right now I certainly can download the game and play it on my Vita where I'm from. Here's the proof :

It may depend on the region though, so that sucks.

There were a few PS1 games I bought digitally that required downloading them on PS3 first, then transferring to the Vita via USB, I think MGS 1 was one of them but I could be mistaken, possibly this as well?

That would be great if true. I can't download MGS here either. I'll try this method once I get home.

Oh yeah really 🤔 ? I don't have a PS3 so I downloaded all my PS1 games directly on my Vita. Wouldn't want to buy a whole new machine just to transfer games though.

It may change if you're in the Americas or in Europe or Japan however, I dunno.

But back on topic. Silent Hill is my favorite horror franchise ever, even though my interest for it mainly centers around the first trilogy and to a certain extent Shattered Memories.

I was a bit on the fence when Silent Hills got announced. Even with incredibly talented guys at the helm of the project, I wasn't sure if it would end up being such an incredible "Silent Hill". A great horror game for sure, but just as beautifully somber, profound and poignant as SH2 ? With we saw with the demo, the trailer and all, I wasn't sure about that. But guess we'll never know, and that sucks balls big time !

I crave for a SH trilogy remake, especially of 2 obviously. A new entry ? Maybe, but it needs the right people behind it and of course, Konami acting a lot less stupid than they do right now.

It was a minor step down. I actually prefer the jankier animations, especially when it comes to the ghosts and enemies. They feel more unnatural and disturbing.

Well the ghosts didn't have any really intricate animations. They were hust hovering which was cool. I'm basically talking about the character animations not the enemies.

Ok, I tried it yesterday and I think it works. I wasn't able to play the game because I had some problems while transferring it to the Vita.
I was getting an error, "NP 9968 2", and it is related to 2FA. You need to turn it off in order to transfer the game and I don't feel like doing it.
