PlayStation 4 sell through in the US has surpassed 30 million

The difference though is diminishing returns.

Like going from a cross-gen game on PS1 to PS2 felt like completely different experiences. You also still had a lot of developers making exclusive games that demonstrated the power early into the system's life(i.e Grand Theft Auto 3).

But what happens when PS4 games play very similar to PS5 ones, just with turned down settings? That's where I'm imagining the scenario how will Sony juggle the two systems without jeopardizing either success. AAA games also take a lot longer to make, so it could be years after the PS5 launches do we see a game that truly can't be done on last gen.
The bigger difference is the starting library.

The PS4 was a hard break from the PS3 architecturally and thus, Sony had to start from square one. In contrast, the PS5 will be BC with PS4 games. As a result, the PS5 library already has hundreds of games as a sale of a PS4 game is also a sale of a "PS5 game". And you'll get to enjoy higher resolution (or SSAA if you have a sub 4K display) and/or higher + more stable framerates.

Maybe 45m at the end of lifecycle. Again, depends on discounts.
They should have it down to 200 to 220 for slim by now to introduce more potential PS5 customers though.
Kaz would have dropped the price in the second half of last year imo, Yoshida seems to be more of an old school Japanese businessman.

I’m not concerned. Things will go just like this gen went, and the gen before it.

The diminishing returns will not be what one thinks. It’s a fun buzzword however.
Agree to disagree, but I do think diminishing returns is a real thing.

The upgrade from PS1 to PS2 was a no brainer. It wasn't just graphics, you also got the use of DVD's and movie playback, online play, higher quality sound, wireless controllers and other gaming perheripals (remember Guitar Hero?).

Now compare that to the jump from PS4 to PS5. Ok, you got more processing power and.....?

See. On top of costing a lot more money, why wouldn't more people stay with the current consoles instead of upgrading immediately? Whereas you could have even just bought the PS2 to just watch movies, a PS5 purchase is literally for better graphics and a faster hard drive, but everything else is still the same.

The thing is, now they are looking beyond graphics and processing power.... the fast loading will be a big change and I am pretty sure it is proprietary tech, the new sound technology will also add to the immersion and the ray tracing will offer lighting that we have never experienced before.

Of course PS4 was a disappointment in the CPU department and PS5 looks like it will fix that in a big way, that should allow far more complex AI and crowds, as well as interaction and physics. Not to mention increasing the frame rate.

So although in a sense you are correct the absolute power in each iteration of gpus and cpus does offer diminishing returns.... the 7 years, progression to 7nm fabrication and the new, more wholistic approach to the console should make it feel like a big step forward. Hopefully anyway.... haha

Hold on, the console market is dead in japan, so shouldn't those numbers be waaay lower for the ps4 there than two million less than the ps3s?

Well, the x360 sold like 1.6 million there, and the Wii was the best seller by a far margin with 20 million. Not to mention that most of the PS3 sales actually came from Europe.

Overall, its a big decline, the Switch sells like hotcakes there because its a portable system.

Roughly 1 in 11 people in the USA have a PS4.
That's not entirely accurate since some individuals might own more than one nor does it account for broken items. However, to have fun with the numbers, that means:

Around 1 in 4 household has a PS4 in the US.

It's been rumored it will have a screen on the controller and it will have joycon-like detachable sticks,
If the PS5 includes a 4k Blu-Ray player and a, SSD, and VR on top of that, then that is a much greater upgrade no-brainer than PS1 to PS2.

Sony will discontinue the PS4 Pro name. And release a Super Slim PS4 (which might just end up having PS4 Pro capabilities) for 200$ along with PS5 for 500$. Sony’s name is gonna be all over the Olympics. I expect easy money.

Hope you like your cross-gen games when PS5 launches.

I wonder if Sony considers this to be both a blessing and a curse. The PS4 is a huge success but at the same time, it's also going to get in the way of the PS5's marketing.

For Microsoft, it's less of problem when going from Xbox One/X to the the successor, makes you wonder if they will take advantage of this by launching first again (but with weaker harder) or giving Playstation even more market share if they debut last.

NO. For MS it's more of a problem. They have to convince people to get the successor to the Xbox One. At this point it's easier to just stay in your same ecosystem that you are use to. Or get the one that your friends have.

The 360 says otherwise.

The original Xbox was a failure (relative to PS2), so the 360 was released out the gate first and MS did little to keep the OG Xbox alive after that.

For the complete inverse, the PS2 was a massive success whereas the PS3 stumbled hard at the beginning. Sony did try to keep the PS2 alive while they waited for the PS3 to slowly catch up.

The PS2 success helped the PS3 though. And with the 360, I'd say MS really dropped the ball with growing or maintaining their global audience. During the 360 era, they at least tried to create games that Asia would buy. Now? Basically none of their games are catered to the Asian audience.

Sony also worked hard and launched quality games on PS3 to show people playstation was still strong and marketing for ps4 ("4theplayers") was something no one doubt. This is not something MS showed with Xbox One, all we have are promises. Since they bought several studios, next platform should be better, but playstation is a well stablished reality.

Plus MS was trying to convince people that DRM with your games was a good thing and that you WANT an always online/connected console.
